Should Schools Require Students to Wear Uniforms? | What are the pros and cons of school uniforms?
In this video, we take a look at the arguments for (pros) and arguments against (cons) school uniforms and ultimately decide whether schools should require students to wear uniforms. We first look at the the history and current statistics behind school uniforms in public schools and were it got started as well as when it became more popular in the United States. Afterward we look at 4 arguments that favor the requirement of school uniforms and then 4 arguments against the requirement of school uniforms. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide which side you choose in this debate.

some people use bullying as an argument to have uniforms but in reality kids will allways find another way to bully the to replace clothing. They also say it looks nicer but litterally nobody cares and im not wearing a polo to school when i prefer to wear a t shirt, jacket, and pants

“Stops drugs and vandalism and bullying” how does that work Apparently wearing some uniform stops drugs
Uniforms are fairly reasonable except when you’re doing school from home on zoom
I had the opportunity to experience wearing a school uniform and not and for me the answer is a straight up no! I was always complaining about wearing a school uniform, it was uncomfortable, in the winter I was cold as heck, and it took over 20+ minutes every day for the teachers to do uniform check before entering the class! I don’t believe bullying stops with the school uniform. In my school with uniforms bullying happened constantly! The teachers would even say to the kids. “ don’t let other people tell you how you should look .” Whenever they said that I always wondered “ what? But your telling me how to look.” For me it’s a no. In the school I went to without the uniform bullying still happened. But at least people did have self expression and didn’t have to waste 20+ minutes each morning checking to see if the kids had there uniforms on.

I don’t support school uniform, though I’m fine with wearing them myself doesn’t mean I approve of this violation of freedom of expression. Because this rule in school exists that you have to wear school uniform, it tells you how long the length of your skirt must be, the length of your hair and even the color of your hair should be natural and in Asian it’s mostly black, so you can not dyed your hair. These factors of how you look doesn’t even affect your academic success, but the level of how much school are enforcing them is too extreme especially in Asia. A few years ago it was normal for a student to get their hair cut by the teacher without their consent if it’s considered even a centimeter too long. And there were cases where the teacher intentionally cut the student’s hair terribly as punishment. Not only does it damage the student’s self esteem, keep them from expressing themselves it is also a tool for the teachers to abuse the students. Because this dress code exists they focus their attention to how a student should dress rather than how to improve their education. It is much more strict especially in all girl school where the teachers would check one by one if you have dressed properly at the school’s gate and even deduct your point that I couldn’t help but question why the emphasis for girls to dress appropriately, but not the same for boys? I was a straight A student for the three years I studied there and normally you would get an award at the end of the year, but because I cut my hair just a bit they have to discuss with each other whether I’m fit for it or not. Just because this dress code exists that I, who studies hard and gets straight A and behaves well for the whole three years ,but just because I cut my hair a little? Luckily they did allow me to get the award, but I couldn’t help but question what if I didn’t cut my hair a little, but decides to break the dress code? Even if that student behaves well, studies hard and puts their all in these three years will they not get the award if they break a single dress code? Only recently that there’s more protests about the freedom of expression that they finally gives the students more leeway to express themselves and only now that cutting students’ hair without one’s consent isn’t allowed, but still if the teachers could instead focus more on their education rather than how to deduct a student’s point because of the way they dressed or at least alleviate this systematic oppression in the school. I would prefer not to have a school uniform.
I’ve taught in a charter school that requires uniforms for 12 years. I think the best thing is that it mostly eliminates the comparison of those with money and those without. Students are more modest due to the rules. And there’s no inappropriate pictures on the students’ outfits.

A funny feature in the UK where all schools have uniform, but they still try to distinguish themselves on a school by school basis (along with the 'coat of arms' etc.) This eventually leads to a lot variety to differentiate between schools, and then some horrendous colour combinations and awful looking uniforms. This doesn't seem to happen in asia where every school has a very similar uniform.

It shouldn't be forced on people.
Personally, (coming from a person who had to wear uniforms in elementary school, middle school, and high school) I don't think that kids should have to wear uniforms. I think it should be optional. It does not let kids express themselves. If your wearing the same thing for 6h every single day that you don't even like makes it really hard to express yourself. They may not be comfortable in them either, which makes it hard to focus in school because you would be focused on what is bothering you. Like they said in the video, it may not fit your body type and it could embarrass you, and make you insecure. Also, parents/guardians may not be able to afford uniforms, and in my middle school the girls could only wear skirts, and the boys could only wear pants. That is just horrible. In winter it was cold as shit when wearing stupid ugly skirts that I hated. Anyway i'm definitely on team no uniforms.
As a broke student that only got to study in expensive school because of over 50% scholarship every year, I'd say I love wearing uniform because I'm not the confident type, and I'm always insecure about how people think of me, or criticize me base on my fashion choice, cuz my sense of fashion is already bad or I might say, I just don't have any fancy clothes.
Excellent arguments both for and against A young family member is currently having a debate competition with her school on this Topic and I will surely forward this to her

I am all in for school uniforms on the condition that there are some choices. Students should not be wearing shorts and feel cold if the school says "It is not 1st of October yet" but the temperature has dropped. In general, with a set of rules about clothing you can expect everybody (including teachers/staff) to wear appropriate clothes that is conducive for a better learning environment for everybody. In fact there have been companies who moved to uniforms as well because they were fed up with people coming to work in unprofessional clothes. You can wear your tank top at home, sweetie. Otherwise find a different school.
@yunggk7776
Жыл бұрын
You do realize there's a certain phrase called a Dress Code and if somebody comes into your company were an inappropriate stuff that's out of your dress code these should just fire them if a student comes to school wearing something inappropriate that is not in the dress code they should get in trouble for it it's a simple solution that is less expensive considering that a lot of states don't like giving that much money to our education system in general where I live many schools struggle to keep their campuses looking nice to get programs that kids really need because they quote on quote lack the funds yet these same schools have the funding to buy hundreds and hundreds of uniforms that they make parents pay for it's no excuse is just being greedy just implement a dress code problem solved
One factor everyone misses about school uniforms is the classroom disruption it can cause. The uniform must be enforced. So if you say “no hoodies or sweaters in class” either the teacher, or some other staff member (dean, administrator) must come around and enforce it. This causes major classroom disruption. Now class has to be stopped so a teacher can tell the student to remove their items of clothing. The economic factor of uniforms is not as a big of a deal as people make it seem. I worked in a unformed school for 10+ years. The kids who would normally wear expensive clothing with supplement their need for expensive items with belts, shoes, coats, bags etc etc. The kids with money, will always show they have money. Some schools even send students home if they’re without their uniform. Depending how far the school is from the students home, they will not return. Now they lose a school day.

Ok so wear the same clothes like NPCs not being truly human
70 years ago I was at an exclusive boys boarding school. Most of the kids were very rich. We didn't have a uniform and we all wore clothes that looked like they were from a flea market. Perhaps they were as rich people are notoriously mean when it comes to spending on their kids. I don't remember anyone ever saying anything about anyone's clothes. Like most of the kids I wore jeans or shorts. In most schools in America jeans weren't allowed in those days. But we were in Switzerland and nobody cared. Teachers didn't have to waste time enforcing uniform and dress codes. On school trips which we did a lot no-one got lost. We and the teachers all knew who was who. We hardly had any rules either, so also not much punishment. I don't remember any, nor any bullying or, and this may be a bad point, any rebellion. There was nothing to rebel against. So we all concentrated on our studies. Academic standards were high. In my opinion school manufactures problems with too many unnecessary rules. I think we were more like a well functioning family with professional parents. I was from England so I knew kids who wore uniforms. I would not say they were any better educated or behaved because of their uniform. Actually quite the opposite.
my school requires them too. Its very strict by the way. My experience was eh something I hated so much the uniform is always so tight it has a standard white blouse a tie then a black blazer but theres an option for a blue one but i got the block one instead. In the sumer its burning the black blazer absorts more heat than white. Dont let me say about the tie its bacically a choker at this point its extremly tight the blouse is a bit weird it has to many white i donr know how to describe thatbso sorry. 2 THE WORST PART!!!!!! Each morning a person from the staff comes to check if we had the uniform on correctly blazer not buttoned lecture. No tie lecture. Tie on wrong the staff would fix it up fiecrcely and hard. They called it the Uniform Check. For girls its even more scariere and more ferce. Short skirt go get a new one. The skirts are checker pattern blue which is more weirder than i thought it would be. Also it has a nametag on it if it breaks principles office well not all the time depends how you broke it along with the blazer buttons. 3 STRICT MANEGMENT if it has a stain your givven a yell at by that staff who checks your stipid uniform every single day of the school year!!! 4 STRICT CUSTOMIZING!!¡! If you bleach it your suspended for that you will deal with black or blue no matter what you cant do anyrhing your bacically being dictated what you would wear its like before 1787 when they at king george the third 400 years ago its close to that. ADVANTAGES!! 1 it prevents distractions. 2 prevents crie but it does not. DISAVEANTEGES!!!! I don’t think they should be required but I actually love wearing them it’s easier to make friends because you can’t really base your first impression on looks.
I'm pro uniform, there's nothing better than not having to choose what to dress every day for school, The uniform does deter from bullying about clothes, not other types of bullying, but still one less thing to bully about. It does create a sense of community and you're still able to express yourself even if you wear the same thing as everyone else. So, I'm pro uniforms all the way.

@Toby Toby okay, I just said for me why as a parent, this is my opinion. I don't think anything I said had to do about finances. So what are you getting at about being financially irresponsible? If you throw out a little jab like that, at least make it make sense. You start out looking incompetent & incoherent & you just kept swerving after that. Sexualizing girls(not women) is a complex issue that uniforms is not the great answer. & As far as identity, I think you are kinda expecting too much. Besides even coming to the conclusion that it's what's inside that matters, doesn't mean kids can't wear all black goth look or a harajuku kawaii get up. Sounds like you might just want kids that you want to control & dominate to fit into your standards, how financially irresponsible of you.
How is sending kids out of class for not being in uniform focusing on learning? It doesn't stop bullying, I got bullied in uniform. A bully in uniform is still a bully. It also doesn't level the playing field. What if a pupil comes to school in uniform that's dirty, tattered and doesn't fit them properly? They do nothing for academics, uniforms are clothes and don't affect learning. They may look smart, but why should that matter when it comes to education? Parents also have to spend money on both uniform and casual clothes, which is more expensive. At my school, we only have to wear a t-shirt, polo shirt, hoodie or tie with the school logo on which is fine, but it should be optional.

For public schools it’s decided at the district level. There is a board that sits at that level and makes those kind of decisions. Parents voice can be very influential for or against it. For Charter and Private schools, they are decided by the board that governs the specific school. Also highly influenced by parents because they can choose whether to send their kids there or not.

Even if it was really cold outside, i mean, you could always just wear a jacket. Also the uniforms are very design-wise, so you won't complain about how it's ugly or how the design is not human. There is, make school uniforms more casual (I'm pro-uniform) e.g polo top or hoodie with the school logo or have a PE kit style school uniform. Let pupils who behave well wear school uniforms on a Friday etc.
My school I teach at requires students to wear uniforms. I like how it prevents students from judging others according to how they dress.

In Australia uniforms are mandatory, in private and public school. It reduces bullying due to clothing and socioeconomic background to an extent as in public schools you still chose what shoes you where, what bag you have stuff that can be indicators of wealth. However it's far less noticable. In public schools at least there is a fair amount of freedom of expression as you can style your hair however, wear as much makeup and jewelry as you want. My school is not the most accepting towards cross dressing if your a guy but that's less of a problem of uniform and more to do with the actual school its self. The uniforms are fairly gender neutral though and dont look that good on anyone so you cant really compare who looks better in it. During the rare free dress day at school lots of kids just go in uniform, saves the hassel of picking out an outfit. It can make it easier to tell if your wagging since your in uniform. but that's about it It does NOT increase school pride, does NOT reduce bullying, doesnt reduce crime and only in america would your first thought be they can hide a weapon. There are still lockers, bags, school jackets ect. I'm for uniforms only because it's easy, but that's about it. Most of my gripes are with the actual school Sorry this is so long

I can’t say I agree with uniforms. They take away individuality. Also, not all school uniforms take changing seasons into account. They ought to allow shorts or skirts for warmer months (not all do).

Lots of schools do allow shorts/skits vs long pants by the choice of the individual. No one should wear something and feel cold. And in fact, very often choices do not only end there. As far as the development of "individuality" is concerned, I call my foot. People go to school to learn. You can be as "individual" as you want at home. When you join a sports team, you wear a uniform of your team. When you play in a band, very often there is a uniform. When you join the police or uniform, they are going to laugh very hard if you "individuality" is shattered. Many companies require uniforms. The only condition is that uniforms should be offered by the schools at cost price. No profit.

@@mathisnotforthefaintofheart also, there are uniforms and there are dress codes. I don’t agree with uniforms and there are some places (maybe not in the US but elsewhere) where the uniform doesn’t change much or at all based on the seasons. There was a case of male students protesting how they couldn’t wear shorts in the summertime when girls could wear skirts by showing up dressed in skirts. They went to a school requiring uniforms. I wouldn’t have lasted wearing uniforms (there’re only certain summer clothes I can wear because except for the lightest of fabric, everything else feels too hot). Dress codes often allow individuality to a point but are often sexist (guys can get away with wearing something, but a girl would get coded for wearing the same thing even if it fits the same way for the girl as it does the guy). There was also a case where a girl kept getting dress coded because her shorts were too short (she had long legs for her age and neither she or her mom could buy shorts that would fit well on her and be within the dress code). Eventually, her mom told the teacher to take her shopping (She was just illustrating her point of how impossible it was).

@@lizbriar9565 Dresscodes are not sexist. If everybody has to cover up their body parts, regardless of gender, then the rule is the same for everyone. Can we at least agree that the navel and shoulders are not for open display? It is a school, not a beach party. Shorts should be reaching the knees....yes for boys too!
I'm against wearing uniforms, personally for myself. I think every student should have a choice with what they wear. Uniform promotes discipline? Pfff, please. All the schools I've been to that had strict uniform policies have had major issues with misbehavior from students, violence, and bullying compared to schools that don't mandate uniforms. Not to mention forcing kids to wear uniform HAS led to harassment from staff or students against other students and even going as far as to deny students from being able to go on field trips, participate in regular in-school activities, and disrupting their education by punishing them for it.

wait, what the fuck... Were all the arguments against wearing uniforms peer reviewed studies and all the arguments for anecdotal or marginal findings, or did I just blank on the video?
I see school uniforms as a way to force parents into paying for free education cause most schools when they have a uniform have their own specific uniform maybe a shirt that has their logo on it in your kid has to wear that shirt in order to go to that school so you basically forcing someone to pay for free education Also school uniforms make bullying far worse because when you can't insult how someone dresses you turn to insulting their physical appearance when you insult someone based on how they look instead of the clothing they're wearing their more inclined to fight you bullying does not get stopped because that bullying is wearing the same clothing as you they will find another reason to make fun of you also that excuse is just covering up the fact that we need stricter policies for bullying in school
I think the only good thing about school uniforms is that bully's will finally stop harassing kid for what they wear but instead for who they are. Much better material

So far the only flaw in uniforms I see is the discomfort some students can have wearing it according to their bodies. Other than that, kids nowadays like to make a big deal out of everything. School isn't there for kids to be fashionable. People often express themselves from how they interact. Today you could find both schools with and without uniforms in almost every country.

@@BestAiden23 Sorry I'm responding late. The bullying may be bs most of the time, but pressure to wear good quality clothing is real. And as I said, the downfall of uniforms is when you don't feel comfortable in it. I don't believe that all schools should have uniforms (which is why cities that offer options of both public and private schools have a great balance). I just think that many kids are being too spoiled and making a big deal over things as trivial as being able to be fashionable in a school.
