Should Politicians Be On Social Media?

When politicians like AOC and Trump hop on social media, are they forming real connections with young people who might vote for them...or are they just being awkward? We paired up with
PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs at Oakland Military Institute to see how #teensreact to politicians on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram.

** How important is social media for politicians? **
Social media ain't easy. It’s a new, confusing thing for a lot of politicians. But throughout American history, if politicians wanted to be successful, they had to master whatever communication tool was popular. Ben Franklin passed out pamphlets. FDR delivered his fireside chats over the radio. JFK won over America with TV. And now, it’s all about SOCIAL MEDIA. It started with Obama on Twitter back in 2008. And now Trump basically LIVES on Twitter. I mean love him or hate him, the dude is DEFINITELY being himself on there.
** Does social media help politicians with their campaigns? **
Within the first month of using a Twitter or Facebook account, politicians saw a small but significant increase in donations. Remember -- political campaigns run on donations, and most Americans donate in small amounts. We’re talking like 25 or 50 bucks. So a bump from social media can be huge. Social media also gives lesser-known candidates a low-cost option to communicate and make themselves known. Think about AOC, a representative from New York who came out of nowhere to win in 2018 and become the youngest member of Congress. It would have been REALLY hard for AOC to make the kind of impact she did even a decade ago when she would have had a hard time paying for TV and newspaper ads.
** What are the downsides to politicians using social media? **
Social media has something really unique going for it. It’s designed to keep you on it by getting you in what psychologists call "flow" -- a state of mind where you're so totally engrossed in a task you lose all sense of time. But that flow can turn dark real quick. I mean news flash -- politicians can lie. And when it happens on social media, misinformation and conspiracy theories can spread like wildfire.

I think AOC is the only politician I'm currently following, even though I live in the UK and I'm not a US citizen. It's just really difficult to find politicians who seem genuine and share my ideals.

I like that they try. Success or failure are secondary. Though, I gotta say, the cringeworthiness makes the rest of Social Media look just a tiny bit better.

I like the aspects where it can function as a 'digital town hall', giving anyone the ability to speak directly to their representatives and promote community discussion. I dislike the aspects where it just functions as advertising in a new medium, with all of the usual inauthenticity that entails.

That is an upside - social media is a more direct channel of communication and discussion.

That's the thing, from authenticity perspective. It's has a downside. Bc we have seen how these people pedal false narratives and brainwash masses. Maybe, they shouldn't be allowed during or anywhere near the elections to use social media. Not individually, but rather each party should have only one handle that runs for all. In this way, we can take a hold on the credibility of these parties and their sources.

Cringe. Total cringe. And to your question regarding if politicians should have filter on SM, they are filtering their behavior on SM. They're acting out a caricature of the demographic they're trying to appeal to.

Politicians on socail media are very... *interesting* it's kind of cute how they try to tap on to trends. There most likely not going to change the internet with their hustle for cash and sharing there platform veiws and stuff. Everyone did that before them so there just hoping on. And besides in America we accept all sorts of stuff like Florida. Its definitely not authentic but its not turbo charging hate for politicians. It just a new community that we might dislike or like literally. But still accpect. "Go with the flow" , perfectly describes the internet and its 20 seconds of memory.

Why is it that it's okay for the public and the media to attack politicians on social media but politician shouldn't be allowed on their own behalf to respond to them?

  • @Ghennesph

All this really is is an early trial run of more carefully crafted social appearances of politicians, which will favor more strongly people who can easily change their face and attitude in a moment to play whoever they're facing. Politicians connecting via social media is just a good way to train sociopaths and psychopaths to run our nations. It has worked in every industry that has tried it.

i would say that with the rise of politicians using social media and most people being unprepared on how to think of it its risking, and really have already created this issue imo, an issue where people will start Stanning or like treating politicians similar to celebrities. Which is an issue, because then we have people who will defend or attack politicians no matter what they do, even if they do something unexpected. Im worried it'll create a group of people who refuse to hold their candidates accountable or will refuse to acknowledge that a politician did something genuinely good. I dont think that politics should be a popularity contest in this form

  • @AboveTheNoise

It's complicated, because some of our politicians were ALREADY celebrities before they became politicians (Reagan, Trump) ...the lines are pretty blurred.

Social media at least can show both sides of the story; but as time goes on, we all know there is a higher bias in one direction then the other. For example Joe Biden literally just said the N-word with the Hard R in a news conference yesterday. Plus; don't forget Charlemagne the God's interview with Joe Biden were Joe Biden said "if you have trouble figuring if you are for me or Trump, then you Ain't BLACK" I would never vote for someone solely on the color of there skin.

Really dislike that. As you said near the end, she's not sharing a recipe, she's selling ideas through this means. Social media as a whole is a really really big problem as information is unverified, condensed, and very fastly shared. So, yeah, I don't like it :(
