Should Muslims Believe in Black Magic? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally says the Quran mentions magic, usually in reference to people disbelieving the prophets and claiming they were doing magic. When Moses' staff changes into a serpent, Muslims understand this to mean that it was God's intervention and only appeared to be magic. He looks at the 113th chapter of the Quran, which mentions protection against those who blow on knots, and he questions an account that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a victim of black magic. He concludes that Muslims should not ascribe power to supernatural forces other than God, and he advises Muslims to adopt a scientific mind in line with the Quranic message.

Blowing in knots doesn't give you magical powers in the same way bowing to a statue of an 8 armed elephant man won't give you magic powers. Bowing to idols or blowing into knots just means you're a pagan who believes in power other than God.

@@Danish-ww2jl Power of magic doesn't equal power of Allah because Allah has power of everything at all times. Magic exists because Allah mentions in the Quran that He sent two angels (Harut and Marut) to a group of people to teach them magic as a trial/test, however these people started to corrupt the teachings of these angels and caused problems among each other and married couples. Also Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) was impacted by magic. One cannot practice magic without comiting shirk and thus it is forbidden. There is severe punishment if someone gets caught practicing magic. To protect ourselves from magic, we should read the Quran often and pray our daily salat. Often recite Surah Yasin, Nas, Ikhlas, Falaq, Mulk.

They ˹instead˺ followed the magic promoted by the devils during the reign of Solomon. Never did Solomon disbelieve, rather the devils disbelieved. They taught magic to the people, along with what had been revealed to the two angels, Hârût and Mârût, in Babylon.1 The two angels never taught anyone without saying, “We are only a test ˹for you˺, so do not abandon ˹your˺ faith.” Yet people learned ˹magic˺ that caused a rift ˹even˺ between husband and wife; although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah’s Will. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them-although they already knew that whoever buys into magic would have no share in the Hereafter. That’s always been my thoughts, Muslims are giving so much more power to these things than what they have, and I think it’s from their own traditions unrelated to Islam. If Allah is the Most Powerful how can he possibly allow these things to have effect on a Muslim who prays and spiritually protects himself/herself?? The only power it has is the power you give it. If your diet is poor and you live a very unhealthy lifestyle which causes you to have cancer just because Allah allowed it doesn’t mean it’s from Allah. "Blowing on the knots": It most probably referes to jinn "blowing" or "whispering" to the knots, i.e. the nerve knots in the brain, - that is the suggestions jinns (devils, evil jinns) can bring to the human. They themselves cannot physically force you to do anything, but they can "whisper" suggestions to you - i.e. "blow on knots", interfere with brain nerves which then in turn manifest into "thoughts". An example I always take about this is the following: Imagine you walk down the road, and you, being a good person, see an apple tree with apples hanging out of the garden of some person. Then, in one millisecond, a thought comes to your mind to pick one apple and eat it. You of course don't do that, because it is haram, it would be stealing - but the real question is: where did that thought come from, seeing as you are a believer and a good person and not a thief?` My idea is that this is what is described above - as the devil (who is a jinn, an energy being) influences your mind by "blowing at the knots" in order to create to you this suggestion to steal the apple.

Magic: to trick the eye or the senses and make the person believe something that isn't there. 1-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, God wouldn't have said the magicians of Pharaoh tricked the eyes of the people and intimidated them: "He said, “You throw!” And when they threw, they beguiled the eyes of the people, and intimidated them, and produced a mighty magic".7.116 So will you not reason? 2-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, and you can turn a rope into a snake by this force, then God wouldn't have said Moses "Imagined" the ropes and the sticks to be moving, and instead simply said the ropes were made into snakes and were factually moving: "He said "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs imagined he from their magic to be moving".20.66 Did God make a mistake? or God isn't that precise with his wording? So will you not reason? 3-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, why would God call it the "Hidden Plan" of the magicians or "Kayd" in arabic?: "Now throw down what is in your right hand-it will swallow what they have crafted. What they have crafted is only a magician’s plan. But the magician will not succeed, no matter what he does".20.69 Shouldn't God call it the work or the dark creation of magicians? Or is God pointing to the fact that magic is nothing but a trickery, a hidden plan to fool the eyes and senses of people? Is God just bad with words? or you are the one bad with understanding? So will you not reason? 4-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, and you can turn a stick into a snake by this force, God from the start wouldn't have sent to Pharaoh a miracle in the form of a stick turning into a snake! Was God trying to confuse Pharaoh? Or did God already know that Pharaoh knows the reality of magic to be just tricks and will 100% certainly realize the miracale once he sees it? After all God claimed that Pharaoh as well as his ministers, immediataely recognized Moses miracle to be real, yet called it magic out of arrogance! "Put your hand inside your pocket, and it will come out white, without blemish-among nine miracles to Pharaoh and his people, for they are immoral people. Yet when Our enlightening signs came to them, they said, "This is obvious magic". And they rejected them, although their souls were certain of them, out of wickedness and pride. So see how the outcome was for the mischief-makers".27.12-14 So will you not reason? 5-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, why did the magicians of Pharaoh use ropes and sticks instead of other objects that didn't look like snakes? were they weak magicians or did they need the items to look like snakes to trick the eyes of the people? So will you not reason? 6-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, why didn't the magicians bind Moses and cast spells on him and made him under their control? Didn't they out number him? Wasn't spelling him a better demonstration of their power and knowledge than playing with sticks? Were they weak magicians? or is magic just a trick of the eye? So will you not reason? 7-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, the magicians of Pharaoh wouldn't have admitted Moses's prophethood and would have simply said instead that he is indeed a more knowledgably magician than them, after all magic is a mysterious force and they got outplayed by him. So will you not reason? 8-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, and you can change a stick to a snake that eat others with that force, then even if the magicians of Pharaoh had just one atom of a doubt that magic is indeed mysterious force, they wouldn't have accepted the horrible punishment of being butchered and crucified. Did they forget what magic is? Or is magic just a trick of the eye and they knew this fact, and witnessed a miracle? So will you not reason? 9-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, God wouldn't have destroyed Thamud for killing the she-camel, because bringing a she-camel out of a rock is exactly what you would expect from a dark and mighty and knowledgeable magician, so did God wrong them? or is magic just a trick of the eye and they knew this fact and yet denied the truth? So will you not reason? 10-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, the people of the prophet would have been totally justified in saying he is a magician, wasn't he bringing thousands of people into his new religion? doesn't that look exactly like a spoken spell? or is magic just a trick of the eye and they knew this fact and yet denied the truth? So will you not reason? 11-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, the radical-Jews would have been totally justified in crucifying Jesus, because walking on water and bringing the dead and breathing life into clay and telling people what they store in their homes is exactly what you would expect from a dark and mighty and knowledgeable magician. So will you not reason? 12-If magic was a dark and mysterious force, all the deniers of truth would have been justified in denying it, if indeed there were people out there controlling dark and mysterious forces, because how can one recognize a miracle from a dark and mysterious act? So will you not reason? It's time to stop using the light of God to lead people into darkness. It's time for the islamic world to go back to its golden age. It's time to leave the age of magic and enter the age of reason.

Staff represents Authority , the Wizards wisdom represents the Serpent ,( humble as a Dove , and wise as a Serpent ) They were matching wisdom , knowledge. and understanding . It was the battle of wits . No stick no snakes ! Its all symbolic .

I have to say that in this matter you are wrong Dr. Shabir. science is a method, not all methods are science. and as you mentioned, in surat al-baqara 102, a relationship between shayatin (evil jinns) and sihr (magic) is clearly mentioned. not everything is science, because if we base everything scientifically, then we would have to scientifically prove the existence of jinns and that is not possible and that is not why we are going to say that jinns do not exist. it is even impossible to scientifically base morality. the scientific method is limited to the observable.

The same thing that happened to Moses (PBUH) also happened to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) The Qur’an and the hadith used the same exact word, so why would you doubt only the hadith if you were honest with yourself also questioned the Qur’an? Every time the hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) contradicts their belief, they resort to the easiest solution, which is to question the hadith, not in a scientific and systematic way, but only because it does not correspond to what they want to hear and the society in which they live!

So black magic does not exists? I find this scholar's interpretation at odds with the Quran and Hadith. Black magic does exists as does the evil - even today there are still cultures who dabble in these practices. To be fair it doesnt mean that as muslims we go around blaming black magic for everything wrong - this is not how the prophet behaved.

I agree on many of your points, but it becomes very "western" in the sense that seeing is believing. Black Magic is a practice, and even Mufti's that have higher knowledge acknowledge the practice exists and that muslims should in general protect themselves. This does not mean that Allah is not in Power, if Allah swt allows it, then Allah swt also send us the cure for it (via ruqya). But to say that Muslims shouldn't believe in the practice of black magic sihr, and its existence, and its effects, is a bit controversial in my humble oppinion. Why did we receive the guidance of Ruqya then?

Scientific theory can change, but not science. A scientific theory is just that, a theory. However science is based on theories that have been confirmed and proven to be facts. Theoretical physics is just that, theories that can't be proven as fact. The same scientific method is applied. Now, if you were to apply the scientific method to what is written in the Qur'an about sahr, never does it say that the natural order of things created by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is atlered, only the effects on our own psyche because we lend power to it, and we should take refuge in Him and not the fall victims to such benign practices.

Your assertion on this subject is simply wrong. Are you aware of the following verse? Instead of God, they only invoke female gods and they ˹actually˺ invoke none but a rebellious Satan- cursed by God-who said, “I will surely take hold of a certain number of Your servants. I will certainly mislead them and delude them with empty hopes. Also, I will order them and they will slit the ears of cattle and alter God’s creation.” And whoever takes Satan as a guardian instead of God has certainly suffered a tremendous loss. Satan only makes them ˹false˺ promises and deludes them with ˹empty˺ hopes. Truly Satan promises them nothing but delusion. It is they who will have Hell as their home, and they will find no escape from it! (Quran 4.117-121)
