I recently received a question on facebook about my thoughts on whether or not a vegetable based compost would be enough to fertilize a garden or if more amendments would need to be added. I thought that was a great question, so I decided to answer it via a video so it could potentially help some others with a similar question.

Grow Mexican sunflowers and use them as a chop n drop mulch around your plants. They're just as high in nitrogen as chicken manure.

Thanks for the info Gabriel! Do you recommend tiling the compost into the garden? I plant straight into the ground.

Does it help to have earth worms in the composer to aid in break down as I find many in my flower gardens to begin with I really only grow flowers to begin with.

Yes, although we do not bring them in or "farm" them. They do a lot of the work in an open composting system like my compost pile.

Hi Gabriel. Thanks for all you do! BTW, what do you use for potting/soil blocking soil for seed starting?

We inherited some old seed starting flats from an retiring farmer. They are the cheap disposable ones that we are getting a few years use out of. But the ones we will use once these run out of life are the Windstrips from neversink farms.

In a galvanize raised bed with holes at the bottom or galvanize cow feeders.

When using cardboard and newspaper...don’t they tend to have chemicals in the paper and inks? Is that a concern for your compost when using cardboard/paper?
