    The comments today have reminded me how much I hated dealing with the carpet on my first plot... I feel like I have a really bad case of 'oh it can't have been that bad, I've done it once before'. I did the exact same thing with my greenhouse... So yes, fingers crossed for the extension!!

    The carpet is definitely a pain. My plot was covered it the stuff but it had been left for so long you couldnt see any of it with grass and weeds growing through it all. It was only when you start to dig that we found it all. But worse than the carpet was some of the old style paper backed rubber carpet underlay that was also on ours. That stuff just disintegrated as soon as you touch it so had to skim all the top layer of soil off to make sure we got it all. That was a ton of work. And still find little bits every so often.

  • @JBNat

    @JBNat

    My first plot was the exact same!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmiW0Lmfp6TeXc4.html - I show it a bit in here. It was buried under a good thick layer of soil too, so deceiving. The rubber backing sounds like salt in the wound!

  • @JBNat

    I really think banning it is a sensible option! I suppose weed membrane and matting is just as bad if it's left and things start growing through it, but you tend to see it so much more with carpet!! It can apparently be a bit nasty for the soil in terms of chemical leaching too... so not brilliant! Thanks for your support Tanya 😊

    JB don't want to put a downer on it but i was so glad after considerable thought i didn't accept a second plot i am now in the position where my original plot is so easy maintained and as there is only the two of us i produce more than enough crops for us and as you have stated a good part of the time we spend on the plot is just sitting down with a cuppa its pure pleasure i think a second plot would have gave me to much work to get up and running and maintaining and turned my relaxing life at the plot into a choir but if your happy for a second plot go for it .

    Thank you so much! This is a fantastic point well worth considering. It is worth noting (I can't believe I didn't mention this in the video) that technically my current plot is only a half plot! I think it's actually 6 rods, and the one at the back is 4 rods. But those six rods have just been a huge amount of work getting it to where it is now. The one at the back would take me up to a full standard sized plot. The one across the way looks like it would be MUCH, MUCH harder work (and it's also way bigger!)

    It's a great point! Do you have any smart ideas? I'm tearing up loads of the paths this year, and I really need to sort out the old strawberry bed for sure. I've massively increased the actual growing space already by removing some of the paths and that's worked really well. I could definitely make a better effort with vertical growing, especially my squashes in late summer. Last year was a little tricky with everything going on, so a lot of my plans just didn't come to fruition. The plan for a second plot is definitely to have some lower maintenance things - soft fruits, asparagus patch, rhubarb. There's all sorts of plans rattling around in my head!

    @@JBNat i think you need to start on paper and decide how you could marry the two whilst creating growing zones. but i do agree you have made good progress with your growing zones. i feel like you might have better luck with a back to eden style plot as you love your wildlife as well. imagine traditional gardening zones mixed with back to eden beds. can’t wait to see what happens 😁
