What a wonderful and in depth answer. Everybody I've seen on social media says that you should make a career out of it, which is dangerously oversimplified and misleading. It doesn't take into account that making art for a living has the added pressure of having to put food on the plate, which is tremendous. Ultimately, it is a personal choice about if you are willing to do lots of art, much of which aren't personal art and are willing to work through art blocks and frustrations and the ability to do art even when you don't feel like it. And there is no shame in the answer being no. For me it is. Art is my stress relief and if there is any pressure being added to it, it would lose its magic.

Same! The misconception of "Artists are so lucky. They just play all day." Is very misleading. A lot of being an artist, even musically, is giving the people what they want more so than creating what you, the artist, want.

I'm currently in school to get into physical therapy. I'm in my first semester. It's a good field. People need it. I'll learn all kinds of cool stuff about the human body. It will help me be financially stable. But I promised myself 1 fun class every semester. This semester, I'm taking a World Music Appreciation class. I love it! I'm learning so much about various cultures around their world and the different music they play. My favorite part is learning about instruments I've never heard of. It's so cool! Next semester, I'm planning on taking a cooking class because I can always improve on making yummier food. I like to draw, and I took a lot of art and music classes in high school. But I have no drive to do it professionally. Art and music enrich my life. But I get a lot of joy in helping others. I think Scott gets joy from showing us the ropes of art and helping us in our art journeys. It's amazing. Love this channel! ❤❤

Y'know, I spent a good hour having this stress inducing debate about this with myself and then came to the conclusion that I wasn't "obsessed with it the way you need to be to win it all" (quote from The Queen's Gambit) Then immediately after I find your video that explained it exactly the way I explained it to myself, which could have saved me so much time and mental fortitude.

Right now I want to become an anaplastologist. I knew I didn’t want to do art alone, it didn’t interest me enough and ai. I also have an interest in medical topics and I enjoy art. It’s basically a combination of science and art where you make realistic facial and body parts. Another pro is helping people get a part they lost because of cancer, car accidents, etc.

i'm honestly leaning into pursuing art as a career after i finish uni. i graduate this spring with a degree totally unrelated to art but i've been drawn to art (hey a pun!) since i was a kid. though it wasn't until a few years ago that i started to try to get serious and not until like last year that i was putting in consistent effort to improve and explore. there's not really much else that interests me, so art is kinda my main thing to really go for. but i've been a little hesitant the last few days, really thinking "can i really do it?" and with the semester going by so quickly i'm excited to be done finally (been in it for more than 4 years..) but that also means real world stuff is coming up. i'm kinda raring to go but i'm also nervous. but this video reminded me that art is still something that worth giving a shot. so, ready or not, i just gotta try my best at it and see how things go. thanks scott :)

I think that's such a good advice all in all. I ended up picking art as work after i realised i simply couldn't think of myself being happy if i did anything but art, and i'm still a long way away from sucess, but i don't regret it, because it just, really makes me so so happy to do art all the time everyday. I hope that through perseverance & luck, things work out with me for art, but even then, i'm having fun painting & going out & learning & working on small indie projects, and that already means so so much to me.

I’ve been worried about picking a career in art, since I’ve had many other interests, and I’m not always super passionate about drawing, but god I love storytelling, film and tv. I love telling and making up stories, it’s been my life forever, I feel so much passion and community and purpose seeing behind the scenes work of movies and tv shows, I guess I’m just,,, scared of the passion running dry. But love isn’t always constant, it waxes and wanes, but it’s stayed like this for years :)

Thank you very much Scott! I'm in that period of life when I need to make descisions that will effect my excistance, and hearing your support really helps. I like drawing very much. I was drawing since I was a kid, and I was in love with the art of others. Renoir, Vrubel, Murata, Kurosawa, they all affected my life in the way that I can't describe. But I don't think that art is the thing that I have the fire blazing for. But I know that I have that for sports. I may not be the biggest and/or strongest, but I was doing, and will do everything that I possibly can to become someone that I could be proud of. Thank you very much, Scott.

I've tried several other paths, but my mind, like yours, is consumed by art. Specifically comics. I have such a strong need to tell stories, but writing just doesn't cut it. When I read/listen to books, I'm picturing it all in comic format. I'm constantly studying how artists I love lay out their panels, how they make sound effects, etc. I DREAM about my comics. And now that I'm a disabled veteran, I've got nothing else going for me lol so I am pursuing comics with all I've got!

I love this solution. I have had a love and talent for art all my life but would never do it as a job bc from the beginning I was afraid that having the pressure of creating to survive would take away my passion. I love art and it makes me happy even tho it is frustrating sometimes, it makes me forget about time until I look up and realise I’m sitting in a position I didn’t think was possible, my back hurts like crazy, I can no longer move or feel my body and I haven’t had water in hours. But still I would not want to depend on that financially. Art blocks happen, I don’t like having to carry out prompts which many artists need to do and even tho I’m just 19, I don’t know how long my body will let me do art at the scale I do now as my chronic pain and joint problems make me feel like I’m older than Scott (not that 55 is old but in relation to being 19 it is). I really hope I can do art for my whole life tho, I can’t imagine life without art

i always give people the same story when they can’t decide what to do: my dad graduated highschool went to the army came back and went to community college. All he wanted to do was be an actor so he did it. He moved to new york and went to school there and graduated with a bfa. Then he moved with my mom to LA to pursue more work. One day he decided he didn’t want to do acting anymore. It wasn’t his passion. He decided to go back to school for nursing. Got a bachelors of nursing and is still an RN to this day. People push this narrative in high school and college where you have to choose right now and you’re stuck with it for life. But that’s so untrue, you can have one job or 50. My dad always told me “You don’t choose a career, a career chooses you” and i stick by that

A few years ago i had some commissions from friends who wanted pencil-portraits. Just started because they watched me drawing in school (from Vocational training. I was around 20). I chose Lunch invitations instead of money. So we spent even more time together and I had some pretty good Pizzas! This offer was of cause just for these good friends, but I ever wondered, if I should try to make money out of my art. I ever felt it wouldn't be save enough. To this day It never became a career, but my family appreciates my skills in dally life. Almost every broken piece finds its way to me to get fixed. Just today I got two very old small pictures, my grandmother in law bought decades ago with her (long dead) husband. Just some souvenirs from a vacation. The colors are broken in some parts and one fell on the flor and is going to break in two pieces. I will save these memories for her. ❤ I feel appreciated in my art. Even if I do a technical job for living.

Even in a stressful situation. Just watched the video. I agree. I love gaming but I don’t… love gaming. Unlike art where my mind is completely filled with just art! I find enjoyment! Art is not just a hobby for me anymore. It’s apart of my everyday life! From comics to going to school and learning what it takes. Also, you have to accept that… you might not make it. Art career comes with joys and cons. Always weight them out before deciding! Art can be just for you or the world! I too didn’t have anything else I enjoyed or was good at, unlike art! Oh and I love the art you do! Thanks for sharing your art Scott!

I’m kinda stuck right now. My whole life, I’ve wanted to be a musician. My dad’s a musician, and it’s been my dream for as long as I can remember. But now that I’m in 11th grade, there’s all this pressure of “what do you want to do for a career?” And “where do you want to go to college?” And everyone (including my dad) is telling me I can’t be a musician because it’s not realistic. So idk what to do. I don’t even know what else I’d want to be. All I do know is that I have to figure it out fast, because I’m gonna have to start applying to colleges soon. I wish someone would’ve told me earlier to find something else to love, because music’s not gonna cut it. So idk. Thinking about college is scary. Like, I can’t figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life right now. I don’t even know what I’m doing tomorrow, never mind the rest of my life. My passion is music

I went to regular college (Bsc in Sciences) and have a regular job. While it's OK, I'm definitely thinking about art and writing while I'm at my job. Just spent 3 hours on a piece. I can't even keep my focus up for half an hour during my job.

Thanks so much for this!! My DREAM JOB would be to be an illustrator for picture books or graphic novels. I’m obsessed with art and with writing and I hope one day I get to write and illustrate my own books. I’m still in high school but my parents and teachers are helping me find the most practical ways to pursue the things I love while still being on track to actually make money… because I kinda need money. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but I’m just hoping that I can make this happen because I can’t imagine what else I’d do. There’s nothing else I’m as passionate about as I am with art and writing. 😁

I usually don’t comment on a video so late, but, I want to say thank you I always had a passion for art. A few days ago, my mother sent me this video. I watched it, told her I didn’t think I should even try. But after watching this, there was a domino effect. I told my mother that I will try to find someone who needs an illustrator when I feel like it. After I told her that, I felt more confident about it. All thanks to this video. Thank you Mr. Scott ❤(Everyone is calling you Scott, so I do apologize if you don’t prefer)

Right before reading this I sent video to my son. He thinks his art is not good enough to do anything with and it drives me crazy. He can draw almost anything and is so creative. Maybe hearing this from you, Scott, will give him a gentle nudge and let him see his art like the rest of us do. He is also a gamer, and this is perfect. Thank you so much, both of you ❤

You made me think about my past since I loved computer gaming and art and I would always pursue art actively trying to improve myself. I been doing art since kindergarten but from kindergarten and my elementary school years it was mostly doing art on and off and I would game so much it became a addiction. Starting my middle school years I wanted to take art more seriously since it was the only thing I loved, had a passion for, had an interest for and I saw myself becoming a peofessional artist career but at the same time my parent refused to let me become a professional artist as a career and computer gaming had become a crippling addiction and it lasted until my college years. At the very beginning of 2023 I started computer gaming less; gamed on and off slowly wanting to quit for career sake. It was the very beginning of 2024 I had quit computer gaming completely for the sake of my art career and the only gaming I do is on my phone. I do still check up on computer games but only for inspiration and ideas and just watch on youtube.
