I agree there are tons of great benefits and paths you can take joining the UA, but if you join a local make sure it’s a busy local or you will be on the bench half the year. It truly sucks and I wish I did better research before joining

Sorry to hear that! That is really unfortunate that your union doesn't have more.market share. But yes that is good insight y'all! Thanks for sharing

Hey Joon. I’m 19 and I’m about 8 months into my apprenticeship. I often feel like I’m very behind and that I should be learning quicker. How long did it take for you to have good general knowledge of plumbing? I was also wondering if you could make a video to help me learn how to run pipe and read blueprints.

Hey that ks for the ?. Don't grind yourself to hard. Being in the trade a bit longer now. Nobody is expecting much of you. So whatever you put your hands on...learn it. I'll see what I can do about a blue print reading. Might need to search around

Hi Joon, I’m 7 months into my first year in my apprenticeship for my local and I was wondering seeing your videos did you make a transition from commercial to service? Right now I’m in service and I’m fearful of missing out on valuable knowledge in the new construction industry… any advice on how to hone my skills on layout or planning while on the other side on the industry?

Hey! Great question! So I did new construction for 4.5 years. And if you can talk to your jatc coordinator and let them know you want to switch over to commercial construction tell them now! Don't wait. You are missing a lot of valuable things for sure. And I'm actually in commercial service now. Which is a bit different than residential and I'm soooo glad I have a new construction background though. I believe it's a better way to start. So don't wait ask to switch now! Thanks for question brother!

I’ve thought about going into the united associations union due to the increase in pay. Right now where I work the top rate for a licensed journeyman plumber is 41 an hour while ua pays like 50 an hour.

Do it brother! Always looking for good hands and it might be rough trying to working your way into a union group but if you are.good at what you do nobody can hate in that!

You seem really insightful and intelligent, and not the average Joe working in the trades/construction industry. Do you find it hard to find like-minded intellectual types among your peers/co-workers? That’s one thing I really worry about when thinking about making a career change into plumbing or electrical. I previously worked in a shipyard and often found myself to be the oddball.

Thanks Matt! Appreciate the props and kind words...and as far as your question. You go to work to earn a wage and profit the company you work for. That's our reality. So friends are a bonus. Having a good crew is a bonus. I've also heard it said, "you attract that which you are, not what you want." So if you are looking for aspects of life in a career, I would suggest you separate the two. I love the work of plumbing and ice worked along side great people and shit people. But being an oddball, I'm sure you'd find your crowd in plumbing but we if you are in commercial you often times are only with people for 7 months to a year and half and than a new crew. So that's great and shitty. But thanks for the question.

Plumbing Sucks. Im a 5th year apprentice in CA. I hate it so much I would rather work at Mcdonalds or kill myself than be a plumber.

I’m 29 waiting for my local to accept applications in Spring. I’m nervous but feel this is the best choice for my family! Is it easy once a journeyman to move to another local?

I was a couple years older! So good for you! And also depends on the locals need and what type of local. Some aren't all part of the same UA pension. But you got in! Stay focused on that!

Two fur babies! But a lot of apprentices have kids! Also when your insurance kicks in for the union everyone in your family is covered. What we pay hourly stays the same regardless of how big your personal family is:) great benefits

@@Justvn4thGenTL hey my man! So all trades are for sure important. I'll never tell you one is better or lower. And drywall is an art! I can tell you though they probably rank 4th - ish on the pay scale. As far as, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, welders and what not. Only because of the risk to humanity and also licenses and the like. So it won't pay like the other trades but you might find a job quicker. Thanks for the question!
