Hi Dr. Oller my name is Cynthia and I have had 22 abdominal surgeries starting off with ovarian cysts and tumors, then I was diagnosed with Endometriosis which caused a lot of pain. Anyway many, many surgeries led me to an emergency surgery for bowel perforation and waking up with a colostomy at the age of 43. I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 months and 4 months later I had the reversal of the colostomy surgery. I thought my problems were over but nothing could be further from the truth. I had the colostomy removed in Jan. 2007 and on March 31, 2007 I ended up back in the E.R. because I had high fever (103.5), vomiting and a hole had developed on the incision line that has been cut so many times. When I drank water I noticed that it was coming out of that hole but they treated me there in the E.R. and the doc told me to put a colostomy bag over the hole when I drank something. I went home only to return worse the following day and that same doc was there and I told them that I did not want him treating me! I was admitted however at this point no surgeon wants to touch me and they tried e everything to see if that hole would close and NOTHING!! My strong Catholic faith and so many prayers to God got me through so much but I was losing all hope and things did not look good, I had developed sepsis and I knew what that meant. One day my gastro doc comes into my room and says "let me give my friend a call and I'll see what he says." This colorectal doc was on his way home and turned around just to come and see me. He examined me, went through my chart and saw the extensive surgical history and told me "I'm going to do surgery on you but you have to understand the risks." The big thing was possibly waking up with a permanent ileostomy but he was going to do his best. The last thing I told him was to try as hard as he could for me not to wake up with another bag. BTW, that hospital stay was also 2 months with being NPO for 4 weeks and on TPN. I woke up from surgery and my sister asked me, "Cindy did you hear?" I said no because I was all drugged up then she tells me "NO BAG!!!" I cried like a baby because my prayers had been answered! I was diagnosed with diverticulosis and have had some attacks with pain, fever but was given antibiotics. I had not gone to the E.R. in many years until March 2019 and was admitted for a day but I bless that doctor every day because if it weren't for him, I would not be writing this. Sorry it was so long but 22 surgeries cannot be talked about in few words. I love your channel and hope to continue watching it. Thanks for the info. I hope your wife has fully recovered. God bless you and your family.

Hi Dr. Oller! God bless you too! Thank you so much for your explanation. I wish my doctor here was as through and detailed as you which is the reason i am researching more on KZread and internet in general. I was just diagnosed with complicated divirticulitis with a 2.3 cm abcess. I was hospitalized on 01/18/2023 for 3 days on antibiotic treatment for 10 days. I completed antibiotic and feel great right now but still being on soft food low fiber diet until colonoscopy in a month. In my follow up meeting today, the doctor said i will need surgery 100% sure which was quite big news to take in. I started asking him questions but he wouldnt answer any until meeting about surgery. Lon story short, i am full of anxiety because i have to wait a whole month to get my questions answered since he was in room for less than 10 minutes. I know it is impossible to diagnose someone over a message like this but is there any chance surgery might not be necessary in my case?

This is intriguing. It makes sense how once the pockets are formed they don't go away. Just a permanent weakened pocket. Been dealing with chronic constipation for months now. Had a previous scope done some years back and was diagnosed with diverticulosis. Curious what the next upcoming scope is going to reveal. Thank you for the informative information! Been following you know for a good 7 years and counting. Look forward to more information you bring forth in the future!

MICHAEL FOWLS:. Just like fat. Once you eat too much, you form new cells which hold the excess fat. Once you lose the weight, it comes out of cells but the extra fat (cells) remain - never going away. They're always "screamin' for Ice Cream." (The body hates a vacuum.)

I had the surgery. Before the surgery I had a lot of bleeding and by the time I went to surgery it was constant. I was literally leaking blood. The sit down on something and you knew i was there kinda thing. I was in diapers for the last week before surgery so the surgery was a must for me. After the surgery I was ok and very happy for a while. Diarrhea wasn't a problem cause I had it before surgery and I just dealt with it. Well now I'm bleeding again and had a colonoscopy and there's more of it. I don't know if I want to have another surgery. I'm in my 60's and have other bad health problems and don't know if I have any more fight in me. I do recommend the surgery though. Recovery was easy.

I am curious if diverticulitis is hereditary? Both my grandma (who is 96 😊) and my mom have it. I am 43, and am really hoping to never have it. It sounds very painful. My grandma had to have surgery because somehow her bowel grew into her bladder, so when she peed other stuff was in there too. I don't know if that's from the diverticulitis or not though. I just thought it was strange.

I think there is a genetic component. My grandma had the same issue you described. Fistula between the colon and the bladder. My uncle had a large portion of his colon removed, my aunt had a portion removed. I have diverticulosis, not complicated at this time.

I’m having my second colon resection. I do not want to do this again. I have lupus, arthritis, type 1 diabetes. I try so hard to care for myself. I keep my weight down. I have good blood sugar levels. But I do angry this time. It hurt so bad the last time. I don’t know if I have enough colon to reconnect. I’m just heartbroken. I have had some kind of life threatening surgery every year for the last 4 years. I’m just done. I have had both my carotid artery’s done, the patch. I must admit they were not as bad as colon resection. I’m sorry for ranting, but the older I get the more my health just goes down the drain. But that CR is not an easy one. I don’t like pain medicine, but this was so painful I screamed for 5 hours after surgery. What do you recommend for pain that will work but not cause me too be loopy. Thank you and bless you.

I myself got it first at 25 (back in 2018). Had no issues or attacks for three and a half years, suddenly in October had one attack, had a second in March and a third recently. Now my GI recommends surgery which he says, God Willing, should end it. Seeing my colorectal surgeon tomorrow. Some people have very minor attacks and never see any issues. Others have bad attacks and should opt for removal. Be patient and see how it goes for you. Wish you best of luck!

My friend said he cured himself from diverticulitis with the protocol below: Week 1,2: Purchase diatomaceous earth (food grade). Start with one tablespoon mixed with grape juice or something non acidic. Do this a few days a week for a two week period. Week 3,4: take EB (Earth’s Bounty) Oxy-Cleanse as directed on the bottle for a couple of weeks. Lastly: Take Triphala Extract 1500mg to heal. The process is long but well worth it according to my friend.
