Should I Have Bought a Mercedes SLS Electric Drive?

Normal SLS AMG, right? Wrong! This is the extremely rare and valuable SLS AMG Electric Drive, the first series production electric car ever from Mercedes-Benz. There are less than 10 in private hands, it's the most powerful ca"r Mercedes have ever made with 750hp, and thanks to Mechatronik, taking it for a drive has certainly left an impression!
Back when the SLS AMG E-cell was first launched, followed by the SLS AMG Electric Drive production model, I remember being fascinated when taking a look at it during the motorshow rounds. Despite not being that long ago, the idea of electric cars was still in its infancy and Mercedes punched high with their first ever offering based on the SLS AMG at the time. Fast forward and I'm now lucky enough to own the SLS Black Series, the most hardcore of the combustion engine variants, and despite visually being so similar to the SLS Electric Drive, it couldn't be more different.
After a recent visit to Mechantronik, near Stuttgart in Germany, to drive the SL65 AMG Black Series, we caught a glimpse of the SLS AMG Electric Drive and I was absolutely intrigued to return and find out more about what it's actually like. On paper the car boasts 4 electric motors offering a total output of 750hp and 1,000Nm with a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of just 3.8 seconds, and on to a top speed of 250km/h (155mph).
With the two cars parked so by side, the casual observer would never realise that the silver car was by far the rarer and more special variant of the SLS. Of course it was not designed from the outset to be an electric body style so the batteries and motors have been shoe-horned in, with visual cues like the different grille giving away what lies beneath. Inside it's the same story, the familiar set up with the addition of gauges to show battery reserve and charge.
Technically, the car actually has a pushrod suspension setup that's visible under the bonnet and with a motor per wheel it also has a clever torque vectoring system while also offering 4WD. Being an early electric car though, it does suffer from range issues with a claimed maximum of 250km (160 miles) which of course is under very gentle use.
Without doubt, the driving experience took me by surprise. In many ways it's as dynamic as the SLS Black Series, and of course with the same seating position back towards the rear axle with an extraordinarily long bonnet out in front. The instance torque and ability to keep traction in horrible weather impresses no end, and the incorporation of technology into a familiar platform is almost eerie. This will be a car for the future, a brave move in the early days of electric but something that works very well.

The SLS Electric Drive was clearly ahead of its time, and getting behind the wheel thanks to Mechatronik makes me wonder if I should have bought one of these instead of my Black Series! So familiar, but yet so different, do you like it?

Mechatronik... never knew they had a dealership... knew that they're to Mercedes what Singer is to Porsche meaning restoration and re-imagining a classic where they shoehorn a giant AMG engine into a classic W111 chassis. What a cool company.

Awesome seeing the genuine excitement resulting from AMG’s great engineering work with the electric drive line. The technology offers so many new possibilities! Sure, driving a longer road trip with a battery electric vehicle may still need some extra planning. However, with modern and future electric vehicles rapid/super charging combined with automated charge-stop planning makes long-distance travelling easy.
Love your content and been long time subscriber but I have got to ask whats with the gangster music video adverts..i know I can skip but was surprised to see it on your channel...love what you do..

Thank you Shmee for sharing the SLS AMG Electric Drive video. It is a miracle that I see it again in 2020. I have loved this SLS AMG Electric Drive since 2014, but unfortunately it was born at a bad time. In 2014, when the battery technology of Electric vehicles was very underdeveloped and charging stations were rare, almost no one would buy the SLS AMG Electric Drive. It is said to have quietly discontinued after selling only 10 UNITS of the SLS AMG. It's a pity. If the SLS AMG Electric Drive were born in 2016, it would be a great Electric GT supercar. and, this electric SLS in my heart, is irreplaceable "mythic level" electric supercar Sincerely yours, Loyal audience in Taiwan

I can appreciate the technic and engineering going into these electric cars and the performance and progress made in the last few years is obvious but thats about it for me personaly, there is just no emotion watching this because the biggest advantage namely the instant and extreme performance just doesnt get translated in the slightest in a video.

I actually saw an all electric sls in the LA auto show years ago. It had a neon green paint job. It was amazing
The power train for this car was designed and built in Brixworth, UK, at AMGs F1 facility. It was a special project that the F1 guys got to work on, and I think is was more of a demonstration to prove what can be done with Electric power.
Everyone who owns this car right about now has an absolute gem on their garage. For the rarity and how the electric age is looking, this car was pretty far ahead of its time. It's the Mercedes-Benz Gull-wing of the electric car age.
Considering how much you love car sounds and backfire there is only one very simple answer to the question in the videotitle: Of course not.
Yes you should get one for your collection it would look great with your other mercedes!

As a petrolhead but EV owner I was scared to read the comments as there’s usually so much hate! Pleasantly surprised! Lots of people don’t get EV’s until they drive one. It’s fun being in an a BMW i3 and making boy racers jaws drop as you smoke them at the lights. 😉

That is a class car!! Wow! I like your SLS ... But this is just perfect apart from the range. However battery will evolve as time progresses. I would like to see your impressions of a Porsche Taycan turbo s.... Or the Rimac Concept One. Electric is the future. I really like that the styling of the car is just like the standard SLS. Sometimes the styling of electric cars, like the Taycan, is a little odd especially the front in my opinion.
Two things I didn’t know. One that the SLS Black was that expensive and also that it was that fast 0-60. Wow on both counts! One of my cars is a CL 65 AMG and I don’t even think it’s as fast.
Shmee, in this world of COVID19 and all the related chaos, your videos are a welcomed digression from this horrid reality. Thanks!

Happy Birthday, Tim. Have a very cool day over there in Europe. Getting the SLS AMG Black Series was the correct choice. You can't miss out on one of your dream cars. However, in the future, if AMG releases another Electric car as desirable as this then maybe you should go for it. Don't go electric with one of the mainstream companies like Porsche or Tesla, do it Shmee-Style with AMG or Rimac!
The best thing about electric cars is that you don't make everyone around you annoyed with the sound of a screaming V8. It will make everyone appreciate the car community more :)

@@hasangenc2922 Pissing off the general public with noise disturbance will only lead to stricter noise regulations. There used to be a music festival near where I live, but this isn't allowed anymore because there were too many complaints because the music could be heard in a 7km radius which was just not acceptable. There are still other music festivals there, but this one festival is banned now because they didn't give a f about what other people thought. You are not alone in this world. I am not alone in this world either. Everything we do will come with compromises. Everyone can come to a compromise together, or the general public will eventually force the compromise upon you..
