    My wife and I operate a small ranch in Texas. We are down to about 70 head plus bulls. We have had all 15 of those conversations multiple times. They are all necessary for beginners but I tell you the truth, there are some veterans that need to hear them as well. Just one question, what is a vacation? Outstanding video! What a great service to the welfare of the animals!

    Excellent list! But can I add one more that I have found critical? Don't get a donkey... get at least two. They are herd animals and need a friend of their own type. One donkey on it's own will go mad and become obnoxious. It's just not fair.

    As an owner of two miniature donkeys myself, I believe you are “Spot On” with your #1 consideration. Owning a donkey “Is a lifetime commitment" since they can easily live 30 years and possibly many, many more. It's wonderful that donkey owners like yourself, share this information with everyone. Donkeys are cute and adorable but many do not realize the amount work and commitment it really takes to own them. Great job on this video Cady, thank you for sharing it.

    Also... donkeys should not be out on lush pastures. They are arid, desert animals and get fat easily on grass, causing obesity that is very hard to lose.... keep em on straw hay. Or something similar. Don't get 1 donkey. 7:47 They need a companion. Don't get a donkey thinking a donkey can fend off a wolf or a pack of Coyotes from harming your sheep or goats, etc. They are not watch dogs, but will sound the alarm if danger is around. Foot care a must!. Long-lived animals. Be prepared for the care of aging donkeys.. Great video. Thank you!

    Before you get a donkey get your homework done. They can live up to forty & they are herd animals that bond & need a donkey friend. They need lots of care, attention & the right environment. You can just stick them in a field & give them a hug every now & then. In the UK there are thousands of donkeys that had to be rehomed. A donkey is for life not just for amusement & they are hard work

    Thank you this was a real eye opener!! All my life I’ve talked about getting a goat. How fun that would be. Nearby is a place with goats guarded by a Donkey. I went to see them and got some good photos (from a safe distance). But the truth is I have no way to do any of these things you mentioned and the commitment of time would be too much as we want to travel in retirement. So there’s just no way, but dreams are fun and sometimes it’s best they stay dreams.

    Hoping you'll have more videos that give the answers to a lot of these questions. I have a few, other than having a barn obviously can you have donkeys in a place with a cold winter? Are they okay with a blanket on them walking around during the day in the snow? And what can you use them for if you want to put them to work? Not in an abusive way of course but in a way where they help out and get praise and treats

    Omg i just realized how much I need one BEFORE I came here. I want the strength and packing abilities but also the security guard and loving buddy abilities 😁 they’re so doggone cute. ALSO for you cute Christians out there… I’m not one anymore but only kindly make fun of you now. Here’s a cute story I learned at an Orthodox Christian monastery in Safford, AZ. The backs of all donkeys have a cross on them because Jesus rode one on Palm Sunday and they were blessed by being touched by him. Isn’t that adorable? I love those nuns. Wish I still believed the myth cause those orthodox folks are good people.

    Very nice video - some people bring up the aspect - given we’re talking of “equines” - why a donkey - and not a horse or a pony. Here in Ireland we have some magnificent specimens of horse (principally because of the horse racing industry) - there’s also the magnificent Connemara pony (and not forgetting all the other lovely ponies) - that said, many of us aren’t “made” for keeping horses (whatever about certain ponies) - by contrast, a donkey - though it requires a certain level of commitment - shines through - despite the absence of the “sheer nobility” one associates with a horse - as a compact, “constant, boon companion”. Glad you mentioned the aspect of “poop” - my understanding is that - in addition to the obvious slightly unpleasant visual aspect - donkey dung can allow parasites, flies and other nasties multiply and eventually affect the animal’s health - so it needs to be got rid of.

    Donkeys are Herd animals - they have lived in groups for protection for millions of years. If you adopt just one donkey it will be lonely and that will lead to your donkeys feeling sad. Very very sad. Loneliness is a physical and emotional pain that can only be alleviated by companionship - of other donkeys. Oops. Now you have two donkeys? Double the fun AND double the cost. Please think this through before getting a donkey. Please.

    Your animals are beautiful! Would it be possible to keep a donkey in a backyard? I don't have a post either, but considering that they are original animals from deserts and arid regions, I believe it's okay to raise them with hay, right?

  • @MayfieldRanch

    @MayfieldRanch

    Жыл бұрын

    It probably depends on how big your yard is. Yes you can feed them hay. You just need to find a low sugar hay. Some people feed barley straw. We feed teft hay. Donkeys need to have another donkey to be happy so consider getting 2. Do you have a shelter in your yard? I would also think about all that poo. You have to keep it picked up to prevent flys. I think to have plenty of space for the animal you would need about 1 acre. A good rule of thumb for livestock is 1 acre per large animal like a cow/horse/donkey. If you have smaller animals like mini donkeys or goats/sheep then 2-3 per acre would work and chickens ~20 per acre. Hopefully this helps give you an idea of the space you need.

    I liked the video but needed the information on what it will actually take just to own a or 2 guardian donkeys ( 1 / 2 ) to actually watch over a very specific fenced area & you mentioned oO Toys...??? I know farmers that have them just running wild about on there small acreage of farm lands, & that they are friendly towards other people but are territorial from what i seen, are they actually worth it if you don't ever have the time to actually pick there hoves teeth monitor them like a dog your housing inside your house, cos i was told donkey's will eat your grass & drive off pray predators, & that they pretty much take very good care of themselves without common pet life aid help from the owners & yes, i do want to know how much a donkey will eat a week? Or if they can just eat your grass that grows like crazy fast, & gets high fast? Will / would that be enough ma'am, for them a few acres of land ? Very seeious concerns there, Google doesn't have the real life experience & facts & knowledge that people do whom's already owned & raised them, that's why i came here, is to learn as much as i may be capable of learning before I'd even dare think of incorporating a Donkey into my life or challenges i may face with them.... I hope they are actually worth it!!!! Like really...... ????

    I don’t have experience with the mini donkeys, but I understand they are similar. I’d recommend trying to find a local farrier that is familiar with donkeys and a local vet. Just to be sure you are all set up before you get them. They might even be able to recommend some that they know are looking for a new home. Donkeys really benefit from having at least 2 so they can play together. Donkeys have specific play behavior that is best suited for another donkey.

    Wow I finally found someone that loves donkeys as much as me. My late Grandfather and I had a family of 4 donkeys when I was a kid. I just loved them, but when my grandpa passed away my dad made me sell them. I was 19 and I'll admit I cried the whole way home.I still think of them every day. Now that I'm older and I'm planning on getting a one or 2. What do you think the it would cost per year.?

  • @MayfieldRanch

    @MayfieldRanch

    Жыл бұрын

    Aww I’m so sorry, my grandpa had a blind donkey and I loved him when I was little. I think that probably is why I have wanted them my entire life and I sure do love them so much! Here are my prices. We are in CA, so the prices might be slightly different in other areas. $60 each every 6-8 weeks for farrier Hay is $21 per bale for Teff hay and each donkey needs 1/2 to 1 flake twice per day. There are probably 12-15 flakes per bale, it depends they type of hay you buy and who bails it. So around $1.50 per flake or up to $3 per day per donkey. The vet is a minimum of once per year for shots and it is an $80 ranch call price and $72 per donkey for shots. It could be more if you need additional vet calls, but we typically don’t after we had Gunnar gelded. That was really the only extra expense for medical and it wasn’t extremely expensive. The fly masks are $20 each and we usually need 2 per summer season for each donkey, they do wear out and need to be replaced. Worm medicine is $7 each per donkey, you might be able to use 1 tube per 2 donkeys. Maybe worm once every few months or 4 times per year. You probably want some fly spray. This is probably $30 but will last a few seasons. I would assume another $50 or so for random medicines you might want to have on hand like butte, or allushield, or swat, or any other various items. So annual costs could be: farrier $60*6= $360 per donkey Hay $550-$1100 per donkey Vet $160 per donkey (only an extra $70 per additional donkeys) Fly masks $40 per donkey Worm medicine $21 per donkey Fly spray $30 for all donkeys for a few seasons Extra $50-$100 per donkey for meds Extra $100 per year per donkey for California trace minerals. Extra $100 for toys or treats. We feed our donkeys saltines so it adds up over the year. Maybe consider halters and ropes- typically just a one time expense- you might need a second or third if you get a growing baby, but you don’t need a new one ever year for adults. We have had ours 5 years. Annual Total is $1411-$2211 per donkey and I would recommend a minimum of 2 so they are happy, This doesn’t include the barn or fencing or anything like that. If I had to build another barn I’d get a couple of shipping containers and build a roof over them. Let me know if you have other questions and I’ll help as much as I can. Cady

    It is always better to have 2 donkeys if you can. They will be so much happier to have a donkey friend. I would recommend .5- 1 acre. Ideally you would have it crossed fenced so you can keep them on a dry lot when needed and let them out in to the pasture to graze and play. You could probably have 2-3 on one acre. A general rule of thumb is one horse or cow size animal per acre, so since mini donkeys are smaller you can have a few per acre. Mini donkeys are so cute!!! ♥️
