Should I Be Concerned About Ovarian Cysts?

Should I be concerned about ovarian cysts? In this video, Mark P. Trolice, M.D., a board-certified reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist and founder of Fertility CARE: The IVF Center describes the different types of cysts and why most of them are not a cause for worry.
“Ovarian cysts cause more stress and confusion than probably anything else that we work with,” says Dr. Trolice.
“Any woman in their reproductive years must have cysts on her ovaries. Cysts come in various sizes, shapes, and appearances. But all reproductive women need to have follicular cysts that represent microscopic eggs.”
“When we do an ultrasound, we count the number of small cysts on the ovary. They represent microscopic eggs, and we want to see them in good numbers. The less antral follicles we see, the greater the ovarian aging (called an antral follicle count (AFC). When the follicles are less than 10 mm, there is nothing to worry about.”
“What about a growing follicular cyst?” asks Dr. Trolice.
“That’s what we do when we stimulate you with clomiphene citrate or letrozole or Genotropin injections. We are pushing those little antral follicles to get larger to grow mature eggs.”
“What about if we see a cyst that is neither of those?” Dr. Trolice continues.
“Those cysts can be either simple or complex. The simple ones look just like a little circle; it’s black inside with clear fluid and is nothing to worry about, as long as you’re not having any pain. Sometimes you can have cysts on the side of your ovary, called a para ovarian cyst or a cyst on the side of the tube called a paratubal cyst - these are also no cause for concern.”
“There is a hemorrhagic cyst which occurs every time a woman ovulates. When you release the egg from the follicular cyst that‘s growing, the egg gets released from the surge of the pituitary hormone (HCG trigger), and that cyst left behind in the ovary is making progesterone and other hormones critical for implantation. We’ve got to have that cyst (known as a corpus luteum), which develops from the time of ovulation until your next period. When you get your period, sometimes that cyst can hang around causing some discomfort, minor bleeding, or hemorrhaging requiring surgery. When you look at the ultrasound of a hemorrhagic cyst, it may look scary or very simple. But the best thing to do is wait for six to eight weeks on average to see if it goes away.”
“The cysts we get a little more concerned about are complex cysts,” says Dr. Trolice. “They appear solid or mixed simple and solid. Complex cysts are not common, but if they hang around and do not resolve, we’ll have you see your gynecologist for evaluation. It doesn’t mean that you have cancer, but we need to examine it if it doesn’t go away.”
“Two cysts that we see a lot of are endometriosis cysts and dermoid cysts. Endometriosis cysts sometimes implant in the ovary and have a ground-glass appearance, which is very symmetrical smooth but not simple. Endometriosis cysts are often associated with pain and potentially represent significant endometriosis inside. If you don’t have any pain, we leave those cysts alone as well.”
“A dermoid cyst is an embryological cyst that has many different cell lines in it. It could have hair inside, teeth, neurological tissue, anything. Size is important. We usually leave things alone that are less than 5 cm particularly if they are not causing any symptoms.”
“The bottom line is that not all cysts are bad,” concludes Dr. Trolice. “So when we say cysts in the office, please don’t get anxious about it unless we tell you that there is cause for concern.”

I'm a healthy 51 year old woman. Last year, I had a hysterectomy due to fibroids. Fibroids are a huge issue for African American women. At the time of my surgery, my GYN wasn't concerned about removing my ovaries. I have a cyst on my right ovary. She stated that my tumor markers were "slightly elevated"; therefore, she has referred me to an oncologist before removing my ovaries. There is some "suspicion" of cancer, but I'm not going to scare myself. I am a person of faith & I trust God 🙏🏾 Bless you ALL as you go through your journey 💗 Keep praying over your bodies✝️

I guess when they feel/know that the situation isn't serious, it's ok to not mention anything to the patient. Or at least that's what it seems like. Is it not apart of their professional ethics to inform the patient of every finding and explain the severity/non-severity of the situation?

I’m 18 and I just got my results today. We found out I have a cystic right ovary (follicle cyst) after a continuous menstrual bleeding for 2 months. They did a transrectal ultrasound to me and I wasn’t aware that that’s the kind of ultrasound they were gonna do to me (it was a very funny and awkward story, cause I was expecting they’d do to me what pregnant women usually go through 😂 I was mortified and in a discomfort kind of pain throughout the whole process cause I wasn’t very aware what that kind of procedure was like. The doctor also kept saying sorry to me cause I kept wincing) Anyways, I was supposed to immediately bring the results to my OBGYN but I begged my parents to just continue the follow up check up tomorrow because I’m really scared and I wanted to do a research on my own. This video is a great help. I’m hoping to fix this soon cause I can feel my body getting tired for bleeding too much tho I didn’t really feel any pain at all. It also doesn’t help that I have a hormonal imbalance and is considered anemic.

When I conceived my daughter at 21 I was told I had 3 cysts on my left ovary and one on my right. Still no cause for concern. I am now 27 and I’m 3 days post op from getting a 25 cm cysts removed and guess what it was? My LEFT OVARY. I agree. Usually they’re not a cause for concern. Although if you have pain and you know you have cysts you NEED to keep an eye on them. Surgery is no fun. Wish doctors would have listened to me.

These things can be bloody horrible, my sister's best friend had one that weighed almost as much as a full term baby before they found it!!!!. They just told her she was depressed and to lose some weight to begin with!. It effected her moods and menstrual cycle as well, because it was messing with her hormones by this point. Nasty things, just because something is benign doesn't mean it is not devastating to have happen to you, Ovarian cysts of many different sizes can be extremely painful as well. From my experience with what I believe to be a cyst at one point, doctor thought it might be, but wasn't concerned at the time, you get like a tugging pain on one side of your lower abdomen, which sometimes gets worse with your period. I also had very heavy periods around that time too.

*Yes but ALSO all ovarian cancer ARE cysts and the bigger a cyst grows in your Ovary, the more likely it is to be something serious! The only benign cyst are simple, but even those ...if they grow big enough can be potentially a problem that wasnt seen/there before.* therefore having a cyst that is being monitored isnt "just nothing."

I was on the path to surgery again however this time I made a decision to take a battle. By the Seventh week used this ovarian cyst treatment method 4OvarianCystTreatment.blogspot.com I felt better than I felt in years. Through the Tenth week, I decided to undertake ultrasound again and the result reveals that the cysts in my ovary were removed.

@@aena5995 If the pain is really bad it could be torsion, I had one that was intermittently twisting and cutting off blood flow and it was super painful. If they're rupturing that would also cause pain but it would show up on an ultrasound. Generally PCOS cysts are smaller and I'm not sure if they would cause that much pain. Endometriosis wouldn't present as hemorrhagic normally either. PCOS is usually diagnosed when the cysts look normal but there are more than usual and when others are ruled out like mucinous or endometriomal. I am not a doctor, and don't take my word as gospel, but I would take the meds for now just in case and look for differential diagnoses. Get more ultrasounds, and really just wait to see if these cysts get big enough to require surgery.

I had an ovarian cyst for over a month that caused extreme pain. Couldn't even get out of bed to use the bathroom. Sometimes I would scream cause the pain got so bad. Eventually went to my doctor and was told it was all in my head. Got tested for UTI and it came back positive so they blamed it on that. I told them it wasn't that, and because I argued with them they finally sent me to get an ultrasound. Got the ultrasound and the doctor never gave me my results. After months of being in extreme pain, even losing my job, the pain had finally went away. Found out a year later by my gynecologist that i had an ovarian cyst. If you're having extreme pain, demand your doctor to send you to get an ultrasound because I know the pain and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I was recently @ the hospital because I had excruciating abdomen pain and I was told I had cysts on my ovaries on the right one popped and the left one had blood in it which they said they could withdraw that blood but could cause damage to my ovary or the blood would just through me right. So I got sent home because their last option was for me to go into the operating room. Does the pain ever go away? 😭

Well, feeling how it began to shrink and eventually disappear within 2 months was so liberating. I followed the steps I mentioned, and within the first 2 weeks the bloating was gone. I just go'ogled Tilly Strankten's Cyst Guide and now I feel as light and relaxed as I've ever been.

If their mucinous, get your appendix removed. There is so little research into these but new research finds that there is a correlation between an abnormal appendix and repeated mucinous ovarian cysts. Of course, this is only if it's abnormal and the research is so new that no one knows for certain. :(

I was diagnosed with 1.8" ovarian cysts and was taking oral contraceptives per my doctor`s recommendations. I used this ovarian cyst treatment solution 4OvarianCystTreatment.blogspot.com and during the 1st week, the pain became less serious and I started to feel a lot better Right after 9 weeks, I was told by my physician that my cyst has disappeared!

Yeah, that’s exactly what my obgyn told me ‘Dont worry, it’s harmless’ ‘don’t worry it’s going to disappear with Letrozole’ etc 6 weeks later I started to feel a lot of pain I ended up in the emergency room. I found out later my left ovarian cyst with a mass and I was bleeding and found out I was 5 weeks pregnant. My doctor had to remove the cyst and my left ovary and 3 days later had a miscarriage...
