And it's cool and stuff that they want to renovate the thing, but you would need like 20 trillion dollars to get it up to modern standards. As a Dutchie i'd love to have a Dutch grand prix, but i'm afraid it will be a huge cringefest. Imo Assen is a better place. • @CarlileStanton

    I think like a lot of people, I’m somewhat split over this: On the one hand, it’s absolutely fantastic to see F1 heading back to a traditional venue in a country that has always been enthusiastic about the sport and now has a race-winning, top-tier driver to cheer for. Zandvoort is a cracking little track but, funnily enough, that’s where the problems start. As your video perfectly demonstrates, its a circuit that is not ideally to suited to the needs of the modern Grand Prix car (in terms of being able to have a proper race that is - I’m sure it’ll be absolutely mega in qualifying!) and its going to need some substantial modifications. If they’re able to do this, then great, but I hope it’s done without completely destroying its character. That’ll be a difficult task I’m sure, but I look forward to seeing how - or more importantly, if - they pull it off. On a final note, I’m sad to see Spain dropping off the calendar, even if - like many others - I’m not exactly wild about the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. More should done to protect traditional European races and venues (Silverstone, Monza, Hockenheim). It’s where the sports soul is. Those in power shouldn’t forget that. (Apologies for the lengthy post!)

  • @fujiwara_4205

    @fujiwara_4205

    I agree whole heartedly, the european races are the only ones where it feels like this is where these cars are really meant to race, like legendary status with a couple other tracks like brazil and japan etc, etc. but they really shouldnt be dropping grade A tracks willy nilly and replacing them with ones that need a load of work, instead incorporate into the calender otherwise leave it as is.

  • @CarlileStanton

    @CarlileStanton

    5 жыл бұрын

    Dylan Van Rensburg I’ve always thought that the sport should introduce a ‘protected events’ rule, whereby it acknowledges the importance and heritage of certain races and will always try - where absolutely possible - to make sure that they are included on the calendar regardless of how much a venue or race promoter is or isn’t able to pay. I know it’s completely unrealistic given a sport promoter will always chase the £££, but it would be a good way of immediately building up a relationship between the sport and the fans. I also think the current calendar is - like my KZread comments - far too long. We’re already at saturation point with 21. 16-18 races per season is more than enough. Libertys desire to increase it to as much as 25 is utterly ridiculous.

I know Vietnam doesn’t have racing heritage (as far as I’m aware) but at least there’s overtaking opportunities on that track (by the looks of it at least). For me, exciting wheel-to-wheel racing has to come first, even if it’s over location such as a Dutch GP. The majority of fans watch on TV, not at the track. That being said, I love going to the British GP and would hate it if it were lost.

    Dutch F1 fan here since well into the 90s. While Zandvoort is just a bike ride away for me, I think Zandvoort is just not a suitable F1 track. Too narrow, too short, nowhere to overtake. I think if they HAD TO have a Dutch GP, the circuit in Assen (where the MotoGP is) is a better option, as it is wider, has more places to overtake and has a lot more space for modifications. Don't forget, Zandvoort is wedged in between a golf course, campinggrounds and a nature reserve area, where our drinking water comes from, so yeah, not a lot of space to go with,

Extending the straight, due to the site being land locked. The part that concerns me most is the roller-coaster. Very little run off, run off can't be extended due to the paddock being behind it, so that'll be a challenge. They could maybe adjust a few of the corner radii to tighten them up resulting in a longer braking zone ie. Turn 1

  • @Jt7166

    The only changes Zandvoort is required to make for F1 are deeper garages and they have to widen the main straight by a few meters. That's all F1 is forcing them to do. Won't be any straights added or other track reconfigurations. Going to be 60 laps of follow the leader. 👎

    I think, from what I remember correctly a colleague who knows one of the track maintenance guys, they will extend the circuit from that strange DRS zone, make it longer and then the track will go more inward, back to the middel section. It could also be that they middel section will be extended more (after the 2 long rights, the straight will be longer before it goes in to the middle section)

  • @P1nkR
    @P1nkR5 жыл бұрын

    The most notable change to the track will be that the final corner onto the main straight will receive 15 degrees of banking. This will allow the DRS line to start somwehere in the corner already, gving more time for an overtake on the straight. But because the second to last corner is already quite fast (so cars will likely not be able to be very close to one another there anyway) and that there is not a lot of breaking before the first Tarzan corner, I'm afraid it will not help at all. I think they should bank that second to last corner as well. Not for DRS, but to make sure that they can already get into the slip stream from the Hans Ernst bocht onwards.

    As the circuit sits at the moment, it's less suitable for the modern F1. There are plans, as Jimbo said, to change the circuit WITHOUT losing it's classic soul. Still we don't have an idea how that's going to work. The best thing to do, is to wait and see what the drawing of the changes will look like. One thing I know for sure, the atmosphere at the race weekend will be like nothing you have seen before! Leave it to the Dutch to raise the roof.

    As a Dutchman, I'd have to say no, F1 should not race at Zandvoort. There's barely any money for it in the first place, so how they managed to get a contract, I don't know. Local government only made €4,000,000 available, just for infrastructure improvements. Also, we Dutchies already have two home Grands Prix: Spa-Francorchamps and the Red Bull Ring. They're close by and it's where all the Verstappen-fans are going anyways. Circuit Zandvoort is a great track as it is for Blancpain GT, DTM (rip, they're going to Assen now, unfortunately), WTCR and other sportscar, touring car and junior formula racing, but not for Formula 1. I worked at Circuit Zandvoort for five years as a marshal and I don't want the track to be completely changed for F1. I think the track is beautiful and it's a track a lot of drivers like (ask any DTM driver). And I do agree, Barcelona-Catalunya is a better place for F1, however without any legendary Spanish drivers now in F1 and the loss of government money, they'll be gone whether Zandvoort replaces it or not.

It can be done, but it all depends on how much money they are willing to spend on it. But honestly i can't see it beiing a succes. IIRC, Formula 1 can only race at FIA grade one circuits, with Zandvoort being a grade two. It would require some modification (idk how) in order to increase that to a grade one. I believe that's one of the (many) reasons that Donnington didn't get its bid to become the location for the British GP a few years back. This circuit has too many fast corners with no run-off areas that I can't see it replacing the Spanish GP any time soon. EDIT: Wrote this before Jimmer mentioned circuit grades

    Indeed, except they are wise not to. I cannot fathom how so much money is sent sometimes based on the popularity of one person. What if that person has a drop in performance and ends up an 'also ran'... Or worse, he dies in a crash, pretty rare these days but serious injury is still very possible. In any other line of business one could not get funding of that size (loads of money) on the basis of the fickle popularity of one person.. I am Dutch but I don't see the wisdom in dropping Catalunya for Zandvoort. It makes no sense at all. The Spanish won't travel as readily to Holland, but most Dutch have a standard of living that affords them to travel to Spain, as the they do go to Austria, Spa, Germany, I mean really, what is the point. As you say, there have been Finns in F1 for many decades now, I rate them very highly, they're masters of car control. But their season for tarmac racing is very short, it could be that, as a nation it could contribute financially to a track that is in effect usable all year round and adopt it as theirs by calling it the Finnish GP.

    So the old elongated layout of the track is partly still visible in the dunes. The last section of that has been a bungalowpark for a few decades. But if you look closely, it looks like they kept room for a new extension, using the first part of the old extention, then swinging around the bungalow park into the dunes, straight through the mountainbike course. Then back to the existing course just past the turn they would skip for this. In the last section of the 'new' part, they could make a few rollercoasters or chicanes. I think they have the backing of the municipality to build that new part, and create one or two DRS zones, while making the course a bit longer. Google "historical Zandvoort layout".

As long as they commit to some redesign that includes expanding the circuit beyond the current property it is on it has a chance, otherwise it is going to be a tight processional race with only off-tracks providing passing.

    I'm reminded of the old Adelaide grand prix circuit, which was a fun track at the time but by the mid '90s the cars had already begun to outpace it, with Senna posting a 1:13.3 in qualifying in 1993. Given the progress of F1 since then, and given the right conditions, a 2019-spec F1 car could conceivably post a sub-1 minute time there. I'm curious if Zandvoort can be sufficiently modified to increase the lap time for modern F1 cars to something more substantial (1:30 is a good goal) and increase passing opportunities without ruining the aesthetic of the original circuit.

Plans include widening the track, a slightly longer straight, few corners will be updated/upgraded and curbs will be lowered. But regardless, it never was an easy track to race at, and it wont become an easy track after upgrades (good thing!) either. One thing this track has over quite a few others tho, its one of those "separate the men from the boys" tracks and for that, i love watching races on Zandvoort. (mistakes will be punished hard) Also... its in the dunes, giving it a whole character of its own. Like i said, i trust they will bring the correct upgrades to the track, without losing its legendary status. The plans are to widen a lot of the corners soit all will be a lot faster. obviously the asphalt will be totally replaced ( the bump will be gone ) start stop will be moved slightly so the cars can line up before the main stand. most gravel will probabaly be replaced with asphalt, save the Tarzan turn as the organisers are concerned that anyone going of in this corner could be catapulted into the next province. Most importently the pit land will be changed so pitstops will take relatively little time and this will alow a 3 stop strategy for the teams. As for it comming back to the Netherlands, I like the idea, but I dont see the Dutch going there on mass. We are practical its much easier to follow on tv
