Should Apple Make Wi-Fi Routers Again? A Conversation with Eric Welander

Ғылым және технология

Should Apple bring back its Wi-Fi routers? What is the future of HomeKit networking?
I have a candid and lively discussion with Eric Welander, an app developer and fellow content creator that loves Apple and smart home tech. He’s been making videos about it all on KZread since 2018.

Beyond working Wi-Fi and Ethernet, one of the best networking techniques to master is how to setup easier remote access back to your home network.
Free Tailscale software makes setting up such a virtual private network, or VPN, much easier.

Do you want Apple to build Wi-Fi routers?

Really liked your video. You are right they are always polite, but to contact engineering would be handy for people with slightly more knowledge. I have two Homepods and one Apple TV 4K and use Apple Home. Something is happening (not sure what), automations stop working and you need to take the power off of the device performing the hub function. The standby kicks in and everything works again. Experience this since iOS 17, but Apple seems to be interested in creating new Emojis instead of fixing these problems.

As Eric said, hard to properly help and diagnose with just a comment back and forth, but my 2c is that almost every problem with HomeKit goes back to their use of the mDNS (multicast DNS) protocol which barely no one else uses (Sonos does, and Google does a little) and mDNS is buggy on much Wi-Fi gear. Try to have your primary HomeKit hub connected with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. (Brute force trickery, you can't designate a hub as primary manually). That means the AppleTV as no HomePods at this time, have Ethernet. In worst case situations, I have connected the power supply for every HomePod and AppleTV to non-HomeKit smartplugs so they can be programmed to power cycle late at night or manually be power cycled when problems happen. (Can't be HomeKit plugs because then you lose the connection to turn them back on after you have powered them off!)

Apple was going to make a rolling wifi router with a steering wheel, but they gave that up

Yes! Definitely an option for Apple to buy into the networking market.
