Have you been told that as a novice driver you need an experienced horse, or not to start off with a young newly-trained horse? How would you define an experienced carriage driving horse? Are novice horses always unsuitable for novice drivers? In this video we discuss some of the pros and cons of breaking a young horse to harness, or buying an experienced driving horse if you are a novice driver. We look at how we define a novice driving horse and why experienced horses are not always suitable for inexperienced drivers. In our opinion it is not the length of time that a horse has been driving for or the age of the horse that determines how good it is as a driving animal, but the quality of the training and driving it has experienced. Rather than dismiss a horse purely because it is "newly-broken", or young, we think people should consider both sides of the argument and also look at some of the problems that experienced horses can acquire, as well as the standard of education provided to the young or green harness horse.

I think that, for me, the personality of the pony matters as much as their age and experience level, whether driving or riding. After all, an "experienced" horse may be one who's had plenty of time to develop bad manners, and a properly gentled youngster might be a better choice, as it may be less fearful, less likely to have been abused or spoiled. So I'd look at temperament first, soundness second, and age/experience third.

Good points raised there, I've been driving for three years with the driving for the disabled and I'm considering sharing a young 4 year old cob that is newly broken to drive. I can drive coachman style and have some road experience from riding.

well said and explained,we have two teams one 6 and one 17. the 6 year old team is much better in all area's and a much "safer" team to drive.horses help us learn about life and when you have a blanket statement to try and explain anything it often comes up short. all the best

This is one of the two reasons I have never trained my Percheron to harness, because I do not have any experience driving, I felt I may not have the experience to drive a green horse. Though, I have trained multiple horses to saddle and all are soft, gentle, responsive with little to no bad habits (save bad habits that occurred while they were in the possession of other people/stables, which I then had to retrain). The other reason is I have had little success convincing hubby and myself that the investment in the required driving equipment is worth it, if I had not the confidence to drive a novice horse, LOL.
