Gil, I’ve been struggling with shooting shotguns since I started hunting with friends a few years ago. No one has ever broken it down for me love the videos and now I feel I have the tools to know what to practice. Keep them coming. Look out ducks!

I am impressed with the information Gil offers - I used to think three things before each skeet shot. Take your time (with the mount), Insert in front (of the bird/target) and watch it break ( to avoid pulling off too soon on doubles). I shoot "low-gun" still and I find I have been a disciple of Gil's without having seen his lessons or videos. Now I will find them all!

@raimundough For many reasons, most of all the damage such a pre-mount does to instincts. Pre-mounting tends to make a sight line out of the barrel. This can lead to looking at the barrel or lead instead of the target. Pre-mounting tends to reduce the focus placed on the target before the gun arrives "on scene". Can you shoot high scores and kill a lot of feathered targets pre-mounted? Sure. If you buy the OSP philosophy you buy instinctive shooting (natural shooting?) and off the shoulder.

So having the gun already mounted to the face & shoulder when you call for the bird isn't good?

I don't think that was the point. I think the point was: -People get too fixated on the mounting of the gun and looking down the sights rather then focusing on the clay/bird. -The exercise would allow you to focus more on the bird If you can pre-mount and focus on the clay/bird its good. I do so myself, but I would like to at some point try the focus and mount he showed so it's more instinctive to shoulder the shotgun, as of now I feel comfortable when I've mounted myself and make my focus the bird and not the shotgun sights.

At our Trap range, many of the great shooters pre-mount. They take a stance, point a bit high, mount, lower, point muzzle, focus at the trap house, and call for the bird. They are completely set prior to the call. Is this correct, just a different technique--or something different for Trap as compared to Skeet or Clays?

It is different, what you describe is actually easier, what he describes would actually work in a hunting scenario.

I’m so frustrated because sometimes I shoot great hardly any misses then next time can’t hit anything when I feel I’m doing everything right .
