Shotgun Choke and Pattern Explained
If you're new to the world of shotguns, the selection of an appropriate choke and shot shell might be a little confusing. In this episode of Backcountry College, Clay Hayes explains how different shotgun chokes and shot shells can influence the pattern and shot density in your target.
We look at the difference between a full choke vs modified choke and discuss where one might be a better choice over the other. Then we shoot a few different shot shells to look at pattern density. If you're planning on turkey hunting, knowing how to pattern a shotgun will be important.

I was hoping you would have said what barrel length your gun was and explained about how barrel length effects the pattern. I shoot trap with a a 30” fixed full choke.

I've just always used modified choke for everything from dove hunting Upland Birds and turkey small games
He skipped the mod choke.....was waiting for that one
Witch shotgun chokes are best for buckshot and slugs ?

I always thought the choke would actually cause a spread based on the repelling of the pellets from being choked
Yes useful video is there better rounds to use for house protection? I don't like the little pellets!

Two of my friends yesterday says that they can't shoot dowe with 4choke and 5 they shoot well why this is so

Are their specific chokes for specific brands or types of shotgun?? Rifled barrel, smooth?? 12 gauge or 20 gauge??

I don't know of a rifled barrel uses a choke.

modified choke is good enough for most hunting needs, and no need for a choke on a rifled barrel,, they're made for slugs only,, birdshot doesn't work to well out of rifled barrel
What causes shotgun patterns? The barrel? The choke? If I replaced a barrel or a full choke with a different full choke, would the pattern change?

It’ll change some with different loads. I suppose different chocks of the same size Milton affect it some.
