Shotcut Text and Line Effects Part 1

This is Part 1 of 2 tutorials on how to create animated text and line effects in Shotcut using only the Text:Simple and the Crop filters. Part 1 is intended for beginners - it goes through step by step to explain how to set up the "base look" of the text and line, but does not create the animations - that is in Part 2. Unlike Part 1, which takes the time to explain basic features of Shotcut and different options for using it, Part 2 will move more quickly, just focused on how to use the Text:Simple and Crop filters to animate the text and line in four different ways.

    @@andrewwakefield4519 I am doing a project where I am creating over 25 videos and I was hoping to create a title slide that could be used for each, saving me time in each video. I followed your steps and created a template, which is a dot mlt file. But when I try to use this dot mlt file in the first video, it causes shotcut to crash. It has crashed 4x now. Can shotcut use a dot mlt as one of the video tracks in a new dot mlt file?

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    @andrewwakefield4519

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@LouisRoss Hi Louis, Yes, you can use .mlt files as if they were clips. Here is the tutorial video that helped me get started doing this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKGBuJikerm4oJs.html. Two words of warning: First, like you, I found that sometimes using .mlt files as clips would make Shotcut crash. Sometimes it would crash two or thee times ... and then after that it would work just fine. More recently, I have not found Shotcut crashing in this situation, and I'm not sure if the difference is that I'm using a new computer - no more RAM, but significantly faster - or that I have continued to upgrade Shotcut to the latest stable version. IOW, if you haven't updated your Shotcut to the latest version, give that a try and see if it fixes the problem. The other word of warning: the .mlt file comes in as a monolithic clip, meaning that you cannot access the individual filters or items that went into that .mlt file; you can only use it as if it were a rendered .mp4 file. Of course, you can re-open that .mlt file as a project in Shotcut, edit it, and save it back, then go back to the project where you use it as a clip - and while that sounds a bit tedious, it really works well for the use case you are describing - you only need to "tweak" it until it is just right, and from then on you just use it. But there is one more implication of this second warning that may not be obvious: when you created the source .mlt file, you may have set backgrounds to transparent ... but when you import the .mlt file into a new project as a clip, it comes in just the way it would play on a video player. That means that any place where there is only transparency in the clip will come in as solid black. What if you want to save a .mlt clip with just the overlay of text, intending for it to overlay something in your new project? To do that, you will need to use a chroma key filter to filter out the black background. (Alternately, create your clip with a "green screen" background, and filter that out.) As an alternative, you can also render the .mlt file in a format that can support transparency. I have not done this, so don't know the details off the top of my head, but if you go to the Shotcut forum (forum.shotcut.org/), some searching will find posts about this.

    Chalk it up to "progress." Apparently they have "updated" the font selection dialog in more recent versions of Shotcut. In the version I am currently using (22.11.25), the dialog gives more control - you can select font, style (bold, italic, bold+italic), size, effects such as strikeout and underline, and even the "writing system" (e.g., Greek, Latin, Chinese, etc.). The downside is that you only see a very small "sample" of the selected font in the lower right corner. On the one hand, I appreciate the greater control, and to be fair, this new dialog is more consistent with the interface of many other programs that I use ... but I agree that it was nice to get a "visual" selection of fonts in the older dialog box.

    My version of Shotcut is newer than the one used here, but many things do not work on mine. The numerical boxes where you adjusted the line height and positioning do not affect the line on mine. Also the up/down arrows next to those boxes do not work. Plus when I go from one task to another, one of the the box perimeter drag lines always remains from the previous task, even after finishing. So many functions malfunction in my version of ShotCut which is 22.01.30

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    @andrewwakefield4519

    2 ай бұрын

    Sorry to be slow in responding - that pesky work thing that gets in the way of hobbies! I do not have version 22.01.30 at hand, but I tested the steps using the latest version (as of this comment), 24.02.29. There are definitely some changes in the user interface, so not everything looks quite the same. (For example, choosing colors leads to a more capable dialogue than the simple one shown in this video.) That said, the numerical boxes that allow adjusting the height and positioning look and function just the same in 24.02.29 as they did in the version I used here (21.06.29). There are two possible "gotchas" that can make it appear that things are not working. One is that there are quite a few options available for some filters, and it is possible - depending on the screen layout - that the boxes that allow numerical setting are scrolled out of sight. This can still catch me from time to time if I have not used Shotcut recently - for some reason I tend not to see that there is a scroll bar there. (Given that you are seeing the numerical settings, I am assuming that this is not the problem you are having, but wanted to mention it just in case.) The other gotcha - which catches me sometimes even when I have been working with Shotcut regularly - is that it is easy to have the wrong track selected, or the wrong place on the timeline, and therefore be adjusting the wrong filter. This catches me especially when I have multiple filters of the same type but in different places in my video - either on other tracks, or at different places within a track. When you are looking at the filters in the dialogue area on the left, you will see the filters for whatever track and time is selected down in the timeline - even if that track and time is not what is showing on the screen. In other words, if you have turned off visibility for a track that has a text filter, but that track is selected, that text filter is what you will see in the filters dialogue. You can change every setting as much as you want, and nothing will appear to happen ... because it is happening to the invisible text/track! I don't know if any of the above will be helpful with what you are experiencing. If not, you may want to bring your question to the Shotcut forum. The folks there are very helpful and mostly patient even when I ask a "d'oh!" question. :)

    How do you use large text to scroll across the screen. I know how to use key frames, but whenever I write a long sentance to scroll, Shotcut thinks I am putting it on one page, so shrinks the font. I have ticked used actual font size, but it is still far too small.

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    @andrewwakefield4519

    Жыл бұрын

    Brian, the key is to adjust the Size parameters in the text filter - these control the width and height of the text box in pixels. Typically the width parameter will default to the horizontal number of pixels in your video format, while the height parameter will default to something like 1/4 of the vertical number of pixels - for example, if your video is 1080p, it will be 1920 x 1080 pixels, and the Size parameters will default to 1920 and 270. If you change the first parameter to something *larger* than the actual width, that will allow the text box to extend beyond the edge of the screen. For example, try setting the first Size parameter to 3840 - that will allow text up to twice the width of the screen, which you can scroll across the screen by adjusting the Position parameter. Using this approach, it may actually be easier to uncheck the "use font size" check box, so that the text will fully fill the text box; you can control the size of the letters by adjusting the height of the text box. At the risk of stating the obvious, note that you may need to allow additional height to accommodate the text.. Hopefully that was clear enough to point you in the right direction ... but if not, reply and I will try to clarify further!

    @@andrewwakefield4519 Many thanks for your very detailed reply. I actually found the solution myself by accident ... as you say, just increase the size of the box, from the normal 1920 x 1080 to a larger size, keeping the ratio the same .. I went up to 5760 x 3240 (3x) and everything worked out fine. Good luck with your KZread Channel Regards from Whitley Bay !

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    @andrewwakefield4519

    2 жыл бұрын

    Chuck, I downloaded 20.07.11 to see how it worked. As you say, it lacks the "Transparent" button in the Crop:Rectangle filter. But that is actually just a shortcut, and you can still set the padding color to transparent. Click on the little box labeled "Padding Color" to bring up the color dialogue. Here you can set a huge range of colors ... but actually, we don't care about the color; we care about the "Alpha Channel." Look for this setting after the Red, Green, and Blue settings on the right of the dialogue box. When the Alpha Channel is set to maximum (255), the color selected will be fully opaque; when the Alpha Channel is set to minimum (0), the color selected will be fully transparent. Obviously, you can select something semi-transparent by setting the Alpha Channel to a number between 0 and 255 - but for this tutorial, just set the Alpha Channel to 0 and click OK. That will give you the transparent background.

    Without seeing your project, it is hard to say, but let me offer two suggestions that may help. First, try turning off hardware acceleration when you export; for certain video configurations, this option does not work correctly. Second, post your question, along with some screen shots of your project, at forum.shotcut.org. This is a great resource that has helped me and many others.

    Unfortunately, NLV (non-linear video) editing is not without a learning curve, even in its simplest form.I make no claims to expertise, but have done some poking around with different programs, especially those that are available for low or no cost. I would say the easiest to use might be OpenShot, but only when it works; at times it has been pretty buggy. And it is somewhat limited in its capabilities. I tried DaVinci Resolve, which is widely considered pro-level ... I found it very difficult to use, but I know others who like it very much. There are others, but long story short, for me personally, Shotcut has turned out to be the best compromise between capability and learning curve. Naturally, YMMV!

    You mean I have to go to all that trouble just to get a white line??

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    @andrewwakefield4519

    No, there are many ways to get a white line, some using other filters than the two I was featuring here, and some using external ways of generating the line. That said, I do think Shotcut would benefit from a "Line:Simple" filter to go along with the many other filters ... one of these days, I'd love to have the time to contribute this feature.

    I should have mentioned: even without a filter to do this in one easy step, you really only have to go through a process such as I have shown here once. Then you can save the .mlt file and use it over and over again as a template for other projects. You can also save filter "presets," which will include any keyframes.

    No. This is a level above. If you want to or need to or have time to do it. All my videos are made with Shotcut with the most basic presets...

    Why can't you just grab the text and move it up or down etc? Too many calculations on pixel sizes, etc just to move a text. Not good.

  • @andrewwakefield4519

    John, you can certainly just move the text up or down using the buttons that adjust the values, or using a variety of methods / filters. I like to calculate so that I can reproduce the same effect every time, but that is simply personal preference.
