SHOT PUT BASICS part 2: How to Tape Your Wrist (and other methods)

Спорт

Lots of requests for me lately to talk about how I tape my wrist for throwing shot put, so here it is! I talk about how most people should tape there wrist and why I believe it is important for any athlete. I also go over some other methods people can use like boxing wraps, wrist wraps, and finger tape.

    I’m Gabriel walliczek this is my second year shot putting and fell in love with it, I’m currently in my freshman year last year I threw roughly 36 feet with the 8lbs ball Last year. I got a lot of work to do I just got sd 2s today I have been weightlifting every week for the last year my squat went from 190 to 300 since last season. I have been practicing with my coach since the beginning of 2023 and I almost learned how to do the rotation, I didn’t have any shoes so I used duck tape on the bottom of my basketball shoes to spin. I’m in a d4 school so I don’t have indoor equipment, so my coach taped a circle in the old gym and I have been practicing there. I feel like i don’t have the same spinning motion since that I’m on a smooth floor so hopefully the spinning from the floor and the concrete on a normal circle isn’t that much of a difference. I have been using a wrist wrap for powerlifting for my shot put and it hurts and I don’t have the mobility. Soon I’m going to get Ever Last boxing wraps to see if its more comfortable. And like you’ve been saying in this video the wraps give you the elastic effect so you can throw farther. Since that I started practicing I became a huge fan because before the year started I forgot almost everything but since you beat the world record I have been watching your technique almost every day. Thank you for all the tips

    Damn I’m 13 and I deadlift 200 lbs and u squatting that and my furthest throw is like 28.50 feet to 8.61 meters you keep pushing and you will be great also I can only squat like 180 lbs and bench 165 so please keep going I’m not trying to discourage u I’m making u push because if I can be great u can 2.

    This video is awesome Ryan. I’ve been dealing with a stress reaction of my radius and while your not a doctor. Throwing for me has a lot to do with comfort even though in someways may not be necessarily scientifically “text book”. I just know that there is a lot to the sport that people don’t talk about. So thanks!

    What if I wear both the athletic tape and the bench strap will it change anything. Also is it good to be lifting at 13 if I’m 5,8 for shot put. And finally do I need to tap my finger will I get injured.

  • @Bxmba

    @Bxmba

    5 ай бұрын

    I think you should wear one or the other. An 8lb and 12lb shot wont affect you much tension wise. And yes, if you’re in highschool you should start lifting for shot since you’re transitioning to that 12lb shot (if you’re a boy.)so that will help. And taping above your wrist is banned in high school competitions at least where I am.

    For anyone who has troubles with officials disallowing the taping, check your state rulebook first, if there is no rule here is the World Athletics Rulebook entry: C2.1 Technical Rules>>Rule 32.4.1: The Taping of two or more fingers together. If taping is used on the hands and fingers, it may be continuous provided that as a result no two or more fingers are taped together in such a way that the fingers cannot move individually. The Taping should be shown to the Chief Judge before the event starts." Furthermore C2.1 Technical Rules>>Rule 32.5: "The following shall not be considered assistance and therefore allowed" Rule 32.5.3: "The use of taping on the hands or fingers that is not in contravention of Rule 32.4.1 of the Technical Rules." Happy Taping!

    I have a question about you when you were in highschool. You weren't extremely strong. 300lb bench, 375 squat, 300lb clean. All pretty average for an upper level highschool thrower. But somehow you dropped 19.5 meter bombs with a 16lb shot I know guys that barely throw that that bench mid 400s and squat mid 600s. What set you apart? Was it speed, was it fluidity in the circle. Like what do you think made you so special.

    PLEASE HELP Hi my name is Rey, I'm a junior in high school have ran into some tough decisions at the end of this track season. I do both disc and shot and I cant decide whether to do both football and track this next year or to solely work on building my strength speed and overall performance for track. This was the first full season I ever did shot and disc(not counting the first month of track freshman year, covid year) which felt bitter sweet since I did make as far as could which was the finals of the divisional championship for discus in D2 of the Central Valley while having a nagging shoulder injury that my coach downplayed for the remainder of the season. Ive never played tackled football, so this would be my first year playing. I absolutely love watching it. The thing with me and football is I don't want to come out of high school regretting not doing it. I know i would be very capable on the field with hard work and dedication. I am 5 10, 205-210. My discus pr is 133 and my shot put pr is 40. Before my injury, I could say with confidence that I had many throws start going the 140 mark and starting to get my grove with shot as well. I feel as though i can drastically improve performance with training and a healed shoulder since I know I have only scratched the surface of what i can do(given the little experience I have). Please feel free to make any comments on what you think is best decision, because I have no idea what to do.

    I would say at this point the main thing is getting 100% healthy. As far as choosing sports it can be difficult and varies a lot between every situation, the one advice I can give is don’t specialize too early. Have fun with what you are doing and just developing as an athlete will help all your sports.
