In an interview I heard some years go, cellist Mstslav Rostropovitch (a close friend to Shostakovitch) told the host that Shostakovitch used to complain that people were playing the finale to fast, making it sound like a victory lap (my paraphrase.) He had intended it to be allegretto so the despair comes through. (I won't retell the history of this symphony here.) And, of course, Stalin just loved it that way. That said, I like the faster performances better; they are much more enjoyable listening. Case in point: This performance. WOW! I must be a musical barbarian.. 😁

Thank you for sharing this. I love Shostakovich and Gergiev. I am reading Shostakovich's letters (he wrote thousands of letters) and this helps me to understand the man, the historical period and his music.
Massive, impressive and remarkable performance! This is one masterpiece which deserves an execution of this level.
35:45 this is my favorite part. I cant think of another moment in music that can compare to this. Its so deeply emotional, human and yet so transcendental, so out of this world.

One of the best orchestra in the world!
Several years ago, I was lucky enough to hear a Valery Gergiev concert at Chapel Hill, NC.
I can't deny the excellence and tightness of this performance....scintillating.
36:37 "this is where the fun begins" I absolutely love the finale, and the whole song. best I've heard ever!
Tremendous Performance deserving a standing ovation !!!!!
What beats me is how the amazing performers of a work like this can maintain their presence of mind in the face of such intensity and overwhelming emotion! I think I would collapse or go berserk!

Bravo! What a wonderful concert. Doesn't get any better than this. Thankyou again for this upload.
A truly moving and awesome performance. Serenely executed. Camera work was outstanding and drew the viewer into the depths of the composition. Bravo!
31:57 the cellos are amazing
Thanks for uploading again this master piece of a recording. I can't listen to any other version. This is the best for me.
I love this collection of Shostakovich symphonies!
Fabulous performance! To me the test of the fifth is the great sob straight after the climax of the third movement, and Valery Gergiev passes with flying colours. Not every interpreter gets the immense sadness of that part. Thank you for uploading

This is a wonderful YT channel. I absolutely love it.
Such a amazing and historic sinfony! We can clearly hear the military scenary, the Shostakovich reaction to the URSS sistem, the deep sadness (in the trird mov.) and the super finale of this masterpiece. Excellent orquestra and excellent condition. BRAVO!! 👏👏👏👏
Wow, the spirit in this performance! I will always remember Gergiev as one of the greatest conductors.
The third movement of symphony no. 5. I can only listen to it at a time when I have the strength to go into that particular world, with Shostakovich. I have the impression that Valéry Gergiev knows what I mean.
Thanks you very much for this great work ...

Shostakovich is my favorite modern composer. Brilliant he is.

No question about it. The fourth movement is simply shattering. For example, listen to the tympani playing the repeated f-a in the final bars of the piece. Makes one's hairs stand up on end. Solti's performance is my favourite.
