Shoshana Zuboff on 'surveillance capitalism' and how tech companies are always watching us

She’s a Harvard professor and celebrated scholar who has been described as “the true prophet of the information age.” (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Shoshana Zuboff’s new book looks at the exploitation of the digital dream and its rapid mutation into what she has coined - surveillance capitalism.
A mutant form of capitalism where tech giants like Facebook and Google are spying on users and manipulating our data to exploit and predict behaviours - in what is a serious threat to our freedom and privacy.
Matt Frei talked to her about some of the ideas of her book: The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power.

The irony and the sadness of understanding that she is probably aware that less than 2 % of the population in UK has the necessary education, background and vocabulary to fully understand what she is saying. I could see her dumbing it down to the max , as much as she can, she even had to explain the basic concept of freedom and democracy. Is a good thing she did not mention the panopticon society because that would have sent 99% of the people to sleep instantly. I usually hate academicians but i really like this lady.

    1. Philosophers and deep thinkers do not actually always resort to utilising long complex words to convey their ideas. That is usually the trait of fanfarons and sciolists who hide the vacuity of their thoughts behind the prestige of pompous verbosity. 2. "Panopticon" is in actuality not a sophisticated word or quite such an esoterica (complex concept). Philomaths can find it in John Bentham or Michel Foucault's writings. The latter explains it masterfully in "Surveiller et Punir" in quite simple ordinary words. ;)

Is it time to fight back by starting a grass roots movement of deception on the part of online users. One example could be to deliberately google something random every day, such as a holiday, a car, a household product etc. Would this lead Google to accumulate faulty data on each one who participates, therefore making this information less valuable.

This unfortunately would only scratch the absolute surface of surveillance capitalist endeavours. If Google has enough algorithmic power to predict your future emotion because it bases its raw material source in many real world nodes of input (e.g CCTV, private shared photos, messages to friends), they will easily have the computational ability to assess whether the search you have inputted is an attempt at usurping that power.

You are absolutely right. What she does is creating smoke screen when speaking of this phenomenon labeling it in "economic" terms. Yes it was also done in business for as long, long time. But it was also done by state and Church for millennia. In fact she is mouth piece of view that is terrified of these "state and church" are losing collective monopoly on that process. That technological changes make possible privatization of the power, and as such could lead to civil wars within establishment (Brexit and Trump are perfect examples of first battles of these wars). In a same way as Putin explains destabilization in Russia by Western intelligence operation, West explains destabilization at home by Russian or Chinese interference. Huawei Bans is just a smoke screen to destruct public (and illegal ways to fight competition in economics)

Little did I know how far advanced these companies have advanced. So relevant to brexit as the same manipulations may want us out of the EU as the EU has some good progress in holding accountable the tech giants and GDPR was partly based on Snowden's revelations concerning big data. Where has the New European covered the EU's data protection issue in regards to brexit, where has anyone in most media for that matter!

Be aware that the roll out of 5G, the smart grid, internet of things, will accelerate all the issues of surveillance, data harvesting and control, along with profound health issues, as the levels of microwave EM fields rises exponentially....Humans will allow themselves to be merged with the AI machine in exchange for novelty, convenience and blissful ignorance....soma anyone?

Along comes another anonymous tin hat mix up that's not precisely true comment. One wonders if such comments come from google itself? Huxley says in his later book Island that soma is good in contrast to his previous soma in his book Brave New World, which is here misunderstood one sidedly, perhaps mixed up with the Birchite fear of a new world order thrown in!? To every piece of sensible accurate, the good along-the-lines-off-stuff, which points in the better direction, there comes these sorts of comments alongside, well on u toob. But besides this, there is a very real problem and its not what usually gets side angled off with (which can lead to conspiracy theorising along reich-wing enablement lines). With what Shoshana is saying and has discovered, there is a truth, which is bad enough as it is.

This a nuanced topic and this professor uses a ton of business and political lingo to try and explain it and appear compelling. She doesn't really do a very good job in that regard (I work in tech and consider this on the daily). There are genuine concerns, but a lot of her comments are pure speculation and framed with bias. I'm concerned more about monopoly than I am surveillance. She keeps on talking about things happening backstage yet has zero evidence, nor has anyone who's left tech whistleblown on bad practices (and churn rates in tech are high!).
