Short stack train northbound in Kent, WA, 3-16-2015

Today I'm at Kaibara Park in downtown Kent, WA (about 20 miles south of Seattle. Across from the park is the old Kent passenger station and just north is the new Kent station.
BNSF 5029 (C44-9W) pulls a short stack train past me headed northbound towards Seattle.

Oh yeah. I've shot in this area before and the grade crossings (half a dozen back to back) are all not level with the track and I've got some great footage of locos bouncing like a pogo stick as they pass. Check out my video titled "Stack train south through Kent, WA, 4-27-2011" kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5qbs9x7lJrLh6Q.html for some bouncing locos.

I'm surprised the right of way isn't fenced off. Looks somewhat dangerous.

Complete normal here in the US. Generally the only fenced off tracks are those around a yard.

Nice catch. Why doesn't BNSF use ditchlights at crossings etc? I'm just wondering

The ditchlights on the loco were on, just not flashing. I don't think I've seen any freight locos in the area with flashing ditchlights. Think the communter & passenger trains ditchlights may flash, can't remember off hand.

Ok, I'm just asking because I've seen CSX etc have flashing ditchlights in Eastern MA.

Josh W Maybe it's railroad-specific. Some companies do the flash, some don't.

SeattleRailFan ok, it just seemed odd to me because every train in the northeast does.
