Short-Distance Luxury: The D&H Laurentian
Фильм және анимация
I was looking forward to making this for a while, so I’m glad I finally could. From its origin in the 20s, to Streamlined status, to Amtrak operation, this train has seen it all. Enjoy!

I enjoyed this video! The D&H ran classy passenger trains, and as a boy, I rode the Laurentian to Montreal. It's a beautiful trip. I have ridden that route with Amtrak also. The Montreal Limited, which last until Amtrak as well, was also a nice train.
Once in Canada, the train could not have run through its namesake mountain range, as the Laurentian mountains are north of Montreal!

The Canadian portion (Lacolle-Montreal Windsor Station) was actually operated by the Napierville Junction Railway, a joint Canadian subsidiary of the Delaware & Hudson and Canadian Pacific; D&H power was used nonetheless.
OUTSTANDING video!! I always found the D&H interesting because of their freight operations - but I never knew they were THIS GOOD with the streamliner technology! Good thing trains still go from NY to Montreal! Thanks for uploading this - I was truly fascinated!

D&H in Quebec operated over its Napierville Junction subsidiary from the US border to Delson where it joined Canadian Pacific track.
What you didn't mention was that, when the Adirondack began running in 1974, it actually used the same Delaware & Hudson equipment.

@@streamlinedtransit Yes. Amtrak had an equipment shortage. The train also used a couple of leased CP "Skyline" domes.
I got to ride this train when I was 8 years old.
The Adirondack or Montrealer trains under Amtrak were rerouted to Central Station in Montreal in the mid 1980s. The Laurentian was probably named for the Laurentien mountains north of Montreal

Ah okay. Sorry about that
The Adirondack runs on the CP/D&H line from Schenectady to Rouse's Point. From there it runs on the CN line to Greenfield Park, where it connects to the main line from Montreal to Quebec, ending up at Montreal's Central Station. Only AMT/EXO use the former CP Station (Windsor Stn)
As far as your account of D&H history, you need to add the Dereco years under Norfolk and Western control, I recall Guildford operated D&H then NYSW for a time prior to CP arriving on scene. . CP ownership was initially under St Lawrence and Atlantic name, then sold half of it to NS and absorbed the other half into CP Corp and dropped the St Lawrence and Atlantic name. You also should mention the post Conrail trackage rights to NY, Phila and Potomac Yard DC as D&H tried to remain independent.
When Amtrak restarted service to Montréal, it used ex D&H coaches still in D&H livery right up until they were replaced with the RTG turbos which was quite the change. The Turbos were then replaced with very loud F40s and amfleet equipment. It continued to use Windsor station for some time (so as a commuiter I got to hear those oud F40s running as if they were going 100mph while not moving (so as to feed electrical power to the train). They were maintained and turned around at the CP Rail Glen Yards which also maintained our commuter trains. Eventually, VIA moved all its train to Central staton and Amtrak saw the advantage of moving the Adirondack there too and that meant both the Montrealer and Adirondack operated from same station which made it easier for Amtrak's montreal-based staff. Note: the train via Vermont is the Montrealer and has existed for decades prior to Amtrak and did Montreal-Washington via Vermont). It was on an off in the late 1980s and early 90s due to track conditions and eventually budget cutbacks cut the train at St Albans (renamed the Vermonter). Vermont didn't way to pay for the train to Montréal, while the state of New York was willing to pay to keep Adirondack runnin to Montrea;l). Note: the Adirondack is currently stopped somewhere north of Albany but exiected to resulme bu end of june after CN has brought back its tracks from slow freight only back up to normal. The Delaware and Hudson terminated its tracks at Montréal on the south shore, in a place now called Delson. Delson was named after DELaware and hudSON. It had a big loop that connected to both CP and CN tracks there. An older railwayt purchased by CN had the Rouses point sub which connected from Cantic to D&H at Rouses Point. CP first purchased the canadian assets of D&H and cut off the connection with CN at Delson. So when the Adirondack went to Central Station, it now had to use those inherited Rouses POInt sub tracks from the border to Cantic to St-Lambert to reach Central Station. (and CN could still send freight down the D&H to Albany and points in USA. When CP bought the D&H tracks from the border to Schenectady, CN no longer had any freight use for the Rouses point sub betwen Cantic and the border since it wouldn't interline with CP. The only train using those tracks was the Adirondack. But from Cantic to St-Lambert, there is still some freight which are mostly pickups and can go as slow as they want. COVID happened and Adirondack stopped. CN dropped maintenance on the Cantic-border stretch, and lowered tracks standards on rest to "freight only". At same time, CN sold the tracks at Centra Station to train-hostile CDPQ which greatly delayed the restart of the Adirondack and required politicakl intervention from USA. But when the train restarted last summer, it was under a huge amount of slow orders by CN AND CDPQ gace the train a bad delartire slot of 11:00 (so much of train happens in darkness south of Albany in falls when ridership is highest). C put further speed limits causing suspension of train in summer of 2023 due to heat on tracks. It wanted Amtrak to pay the big money to upgrade the tracks and Amtrak called its bluff. Well, right now, a deal was struck between Amtrak and CN to rebuilt the tracks to passenger standards and this is expected to be done by end of june when the Adirondack will restart in 2024 (hopefully cutting travel time by maybe 30 minutes).
Would you allow me to use some of this insane footage for makeover? (Love this video.)

@@streamlinedtransit Great.^^ I'll mention you for it.^^
the montrealer stoll runs overnight on this run but it goses soth all the way south to washington dc.
I got to ride the early Amtrak redo with the old D&H equipment. Unfortunately the day I rode it did not have the dome car but it still featured full dinning car service. It is a very scenic ride seeing Lake Champlain in upstate New York and of course the old NYC water level route between Albany and New York City. I would recommend riding it to anyone on the east coast either to Montreal or any of the upstate New York stations. As a note you can also access Lake Placid via a connection with the train with advanced reservations.

1:31: Sonny boy, the "Water Level Route" was the NYC's route from New York to Chicago; the Laurentian only used the part from NY up to Albany.

Well, the D&H did it as a tribute to their original owners (ATSF) and to save time by not going through the hassle of painting stainless steel.

Hey, sonny, at least look up how to pronounce "Laurentian". It's lo-REN-chin, or if you are a Quebecois, lo-ren-tee-AHN.
