Damn, that must be a REALLY powerful laser to be visible in broad daylight.

First shot is a group of poppies being run over by a tank. Never realised the symbolism of that before. Very clever!

@@Stefano-dd2sf Well I mean you got a robot and a big cool tank and lasers so kid me loved it. I mean kid me still really enjoyed the rest of the movie. And even a tiny part of me wishes this stayed as an action/horror whatever it was in the very early stages.

I never realised I understood french as a child ! I must have forgot it all because I have no clue what there saying now 👍🏼🇬🇧

I remember watching this as a kid. The scene used to scare me. It was only today that I learnt that the red stars had been censored in the Czech version in the 1980s.

In Short Circuit 2 we briefly see Johnny 5 revert back to this programming after being beaten by those thugs, but somehow he kept the programming of no killing, but you see that red eye glow which as you can see is an aggressive combat gesture, Imagine if his chip had been so damaged that he completely reverted back to his programming, as that guy in the first one said "It COULD decide to blow away anything that moves". Scary thought I know.

That's why the security chief wanted the robot caught/destroyed. He likely would have treated it as a littering problem if his security person had removed the laser after they captured it at the marina. But Johnny Five woke up, and it still had the laser

Back when I first saw this movie, I thought that tank was gonna fire a second shot right before it got hit.

One thing that always bugged me: When we see the robots normally, if their laser isn't in firing position, it's on the back, facing upwards, and then tilts forward. Why then, when you see them rising up inside the sandbags (0:33), does it look like the laser is facing down and tilts _back_ to come to firing position? A great start to a great movie.

I always understood it that they were in Military mode thus had option to do that, and when back in civilian mode they fully fold back to appear less threatening.

Can we get an F in the chat for whoever were driving those vehicles during the demonstration? I meant this to be satirical; I know the vehicles were remote controlled or something.

These used Quantum Lasers Pemm Particles with negative energy bypassing the secondary junction eps relay.

When a robot would see these vehicles approaching, they would identify each target and order them by threat level. They are clearly shooting from least threatening to most. Someone needs to tell the programmers to use descending lists!

If I had to make a public demonstration of military robots, I would use an ascending list, exactly how it was done in the movie, to keep the viewers' tension and interest high. If the audience sees them immediately blow up a tank, they won't be interested anymore in seeing them blow up a small jeep.

Plus: IRL the infantry would pose a risk if they dismounted and spread out, greater than one MBT. Thus: the SAINT's exterminating the softskin vehicles first has some notional logic... apart from the Jeeps of course, which unlike the Lorries had only 1 man each.

Il y en a un qui a bien ri la joke "agité mais pas secoué"! (On entend un gros rire...) J'ai toujours aimé le fond de cette histoire, qu'une machine fabriquée pour la guerre aspire à un destin autrement plus pacifique et tellement simple. Le Numéro 5 a un grand coeur et une innocence qui le rendent vraiment attachant!

Im convinced that Bungie got the idea for the spartan laser in halo from this.

Aye. The M41 they (the production crew for *Red Dawn* ) adapted was the most "T-72" like Tank prop' available to hollywood at the time, before the plethora of surplus Soviet vehicles on sale in the '90's.

It still bugs me to this day why the combat robots did not take out the tank first. In all military combat you neutralize the largest threat first.

oh well I dunno, anything getting hit by 1 mw will be hot enough to vaporize and create an explosion regardless of conductivity. A shockwave is one thing, but a devastating explosion complete with fireball requires a lot of fuel.. so I agree that you won't get a explosion like that assuming it didn't hit any fuel.

Makes you wonder if the laser is visible or not because they took enough shots from bunker you would think the Tanks would have located them before getting all those shots on the convoy and I also think after the first troop transport exploding all the troops would have poured out of the other 1

Yup, probably the only bit of kit used in the scene that was actually Russian XD (then again it was the Cold War) The Lorries & Jeep's after all are definitely of US design, and the Tank look's like a M-60 Hull with a mockup gun made to look kinda like a T-62 / T-64 (as real tank guns' naturally don't wobble around like that XD)

I had a nergazm watching this

1 MW pulse can be run off a handheld 12 volt battery for and shoot for like 1 ten millionth of a second. But it's like a tsunami that's 1 mm thick. A 1 second duration of a 1 MW canon probably needs a small bus full of batteries and capacitors. It's more like a tsunami that is well.. a tsunami. I honestly have no idea what that would look like, but I wouldn't wanna stand any closer than 100 feet when that hits.

@drchen054 Actually, I did the math and the laser would need to have been exactly 1.21 gigawatts. ;)
