Shormann Math vs. Saxon Math Review

We have used Saxon Math from 1st Grade- 7th Grade. We made the switch to Shormann Algebra 1 for 8th grade. We reviewed the switch together from a teacher and student's perspective.

Thank you for sharing!😁 These videos are so, helpful. I have an upcoming 7th grader next year and we use TG&TB math and I know they are releasing their math 7 this upcoming spring and grade 8 after that which is pre-algebra. I have thought about going straight to Shorman's pre-algebra next year but, my daughter wants to wait. So, by hearing you and your daughter's opinion means a lot. Thanks again for sharing. Can't wait on the credit videos.

Thanks so much for watching! It takes all of us sharing ideas to find out what works for each family. I still love Saxon for my 6th grader because I love the tangible book and process. But when it gets to credit keeping - I’ll switch him to Shormann as well. ❤️

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been really curious about Shormann but intimidated by its structure. Your daughter is delightful.

Thank you! It most definitely took some adjusting for us. The first couple weeks were rough adjusting to a new structure. But , I’m glad we stuck with it and gave it a fair chance. I’m glad we switched now that we are keeping credits and preparing for college.

Soak up those 1st grade years! They are so fun! I still have a 1st grader and am enjoying it so much. We did a video on curriculum and I talked about why I do Math U See in kindergarten and then Saxon in 1st grade❤️

We did that same yellow and purple book of Saxon. Then, we started Saxon Algebra 1 and are almost finished. We plan to switch for Alg. 2 Shormann so we can finish the Geometry credit and the Alg. 2 credit at the same time.

We never did do the odd/even thing. We did start by spreading a lesson over two days when we did that yellow book (starting in 6th grade). We took two years on that book. If we stay on track, we should finish Alg. 1 by June. The multiple choice and timed element will be good for my son. We are doing an ACT Prep class at tutorial right now and timing is his main struggle. He is going to LOVE the 20 questions rather than 30!

We hit a wall with Saxon Algebra Two. My daughter was not aware she was missing concepts. If I corrected her work, the content was beyond what I could remember, so I couldn’t help with gaps. My husband was having to reteach it for hours on his few days off. We are one week into Shormann and love it. The PDF of the Shormann text is available for download for quick access. Love how the student gets instant feedback on accuracy and video correction are available.

Yes ❤️ The videos are helpful. I also emailed them and got the PDF solutions - and it helps me be able to teach it as well. I do the the pdf textbook- we just hate the online aspect of the textbook and wish there was a physical book. But - printing it off wasn’t too expensive so it all worked out for sure. Glad we made the switch!

Thank you! Just finishing Saxon 8/7 and trying to decide if we should stick with Saxon or switch to Shormann. I'm leaning toward the latter because Saxon lessons are SO long, but I'm worried about the transitional period. It was reassuring to hear your daughter's opinion after getting through the first month or so.

The Shormann has been a good switch for college prep for sure. But- we went straight from Saxon 8/7 to Shormann Algebra 1. She is making it good and has an A average in the course, but it is really stretching her (not a bad thing). But , I think hindsight I would’ve done Shormann Pre-Algebra before moving to Algebra 1. (It’s fine that we didn’t - but Would’ve been fine to do it as well especially since she is just in the 8th grade)

Thank you! My oldest is possibly college bound. He has said he is likely to go into theology or Equine science. Would you say your daughter is math-minded? Was Saxon easy for her? I get nervous about the rigor in Shormann.

My daughter is more on the language/writing side of things for her strengths. But - she is diligent and does have a sense of wanting to do things well. She does not “love” or enjoy math like I do. The first 2-3 weeks of Shormann was a struggle, but now that we’ve settled into it, she does like it. If your son does want to go to college for anything- Shormann would be a good choice ❤️

I’m looking for math for 7th grade in the fall. Trying to decide between Saxon 8/7 vs Shormann pre algebra. Thoughts?

I think I would recommend doing the Saxon 8/7 for 7th grade , then do Shormann pre Algebra for 8th, then do the Shormann Algebra 1 and 2 for 9th/10th grade. Then when they finish 10th grade they will have their Algebra 1 , Algebra 2, and geometry credit. So then for junior and senior year you could do the college algebra for sure and then choose between trigonometry / calculus, or consumer math. (Depending on their needs for post high school)

We've completed Saxon 7/6. Would you suggest going to 8/7 or switch to Shoreman? Also Pre-Algebra or straight to Algebra?

We did 8/7 and then went straight to Shormann Algebra 1. If your child is proficient at math- you could go straight to Algebra 1. If they struggle any- I would do the pre-algebra before switching. My daughter is in 8th grade and doing the Algebra 1 and it takes about 1 1/2 hours a day and is challenging. But - I don’t think that the pre-algebra would’ve been helpful to her. My son is in 6th grade and doing the 8/7 book now. Because of his age - I will have him do the pre algebra before going into Algebra 1. But - to answer your question- I would go ahead and do 8/7. What grade is your child in?

@@Home.School.andLife She's a 6th grader, but she is almost 13. She reads something once in Math and she's got it. Math just clicks for her. I think doing 8/7 would benefit her as well. Someone suggested to skip it and go to Algebra, but I'm afraid she's miss important stuff so I wanted a second opinion! Thank You!

We have a similar experience. My daughter likes Shormann much better than Saxon. She likes his teaching style, the shorter yet just as effective lessons. It’s also a bonus that Shormann Algebra 1 & 2 includes a geometry credit so 2 years gives you 3 math credits. My daughter loves the Biblical worldview and it’s almost like having a built in logic course.

Yes!!!! To everything you just said! My daughter is excited about the number of lessons and is mapping things out to finish math earlier this year. The exams and the study methods for them is great!
