The council should add palm trees into those planters. It would be in keeping with the beach / seaside setting. I would have thought that would have been the easiest and most immediately obvious thought for the council to come up with.

I moved to Stafford from Blackpool 10 years ago and I’m pleasantly surprised that the shops in Blackpool haven’t much changed, unlike Stafford which is a ghost town shopping centre now. And don’t forget B and M originated in Cleveleys with the original store being at the back of the Legion Club!

I used to live in North West London for 15 years then Heartsfordshire just over the border of North London for 20 years, with easy access to London and Watford for shopping. Moved to Blackpool last August. Blackpool is good but not as good as some of the bigger London shopping areas or Watford. But Blackpool have the sea which I love, and is on the beautiful Fylde Coast. It is in easy access to lovely little towns such as Cleveleys, Fleetwood, Lytham and St Anne's. Fleetwood have a great indoor market and Preston is also a nice shopping area. But unfortunately online shopping have killed the high street. I think the original HMV store is still in Oxford St near Bond Street tube station, but not as good as the HMV Megastore that used to be near Oxford Circus and Virgin Megastore that used to be Tottenham Court Road. Ah! the glory days of shopping in the 80s and 90s. Xxx

as someone with complicated dietary needs (pb vegan due to allergies) it's good that there are familiar supermarkets and the likes there - it means I can get something that won't have me testing out how unique Blackpools nhs is. 🤣 the last time I went into a subway, I asked the server to change gloves - you'd have thought I'd asked him to slit his own throat!! nah - just a six inch plain sub of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and black olives, ta. that's all, no need for anything else to die! 🤣🤣 Stockport is a contradiction inside a 'wtf'. don't have a sainsburys, we had an M&S but it closed, now we have an M&S food. Poundland was located in the BHS store for a while, then closed, but they're doing the building it was in up and they're going back in there when it's ready. we did have a $tarbuck$, but it went, now we've got a big one where Pizza Hut was - which means, we don't have a pizza hut. it's also in one of the best places in town to see rats running around - and yeah, I have a big soft spot for rats (used to have a pet rat many years ago. she was awesome!) and with the construction of the new bus station, I'm guessing the usual suspects will be taking on the retail units. lost count how many greggs there are, but, I'm over the fake bake and the vegan sausage roll!! everything there is on one level - unlike our asda. access by a three tier ramp, or one of two of the slowest lifts in the area - you can feel your food going past it's use by date exiting the store by lift. (after 4pm - no 2nd lift to ground level - because kids...) the other lift takes you to the lower level car park only. sucks if you're disabled - means a long trek to the side of the building and walk round to the front if you're getting a bus. no morrisons - unless you take a bus to one. tesco is a mare to get to on foot - no buses serve it. and to escape the town centre - you have to go uphill. all directions. foot/bike/car/bus/scooter. with hills to contend with, most people would welcome a change of scenery for shopping in Blackpool - all on one glorious level and no bloody climbing, slow lifts, or having to mug the security guard in asda to help you get out of the buidling because of that whole 'ground floor level' lift thing, and watch him as he takes your shopping trolley down a flight of stairs....... that 5h1t never gets old!!! (there are escalators, but none of them have been in action since 2020) so yeah, Blackpool wins. 👍 (you have arcades full of coin pushers - we don't. there - my guilty pleasure!!!)

What I find interesting wandering around Blackpool town centre is that although the facades and shop fronts at ground level frequently get retrofitted and updated as tastes change the upper floors do not. Look above ground level and you get an idea of what the buildings looked like when they were constructed and what their original purpose might have been. For example, Beaverbrooks used to be the Post Office. Go to the top floor of the car park on top of the Hounds Hill Shopping Centre (a.k.a. The Maul) and you can look down on much of the town centre to see how the buildings have evolved over time particularly the Winter Gardens. What is now the west entrance to the Winter Gardens was originally a grand house. The location on Bank Hey Street that is now the Comedy Station used to be a pub called the White Swan. Subterranean pubs are something of a rarity in UK. Due to one landlord having the bright idea of putting on strippers to attract the lunchtime crowd it became known for ever after locally as the Dirty Duck.

I then walk to lytham and back on the beach. Before heading home I usually have a look in tk max then go to McDonald's before boarding the coach back to Manchester. Abingdon Street Market is now a hip and trendy street food hall (like the old food courts but with independent traders instead of big chains and lots of people with beards and tattoos wearing hats indoors) that all towns seem to be getting now, I think there's another sort of place planned for south shore. We have about 6 of the things here in Manchester now with more planned. All the rage. Get with it grandad 😂

So apparently the answer is no to the original proposition, shopping in Blackpool is the same as any other large town or small city in England, the same old chain stores. Even modern shopping centres, architecturally, look the same. Exception in Blackpool being that old Woolworths store, what a proud old building now slumming it as a Poundland, J D Sport and Wetherspoons. But I suppose at least it's in use! Anyway interesting video so thanks.

Good video! You really need to do a video about Abingdon Street Market. I was in there a few weeks ago and the food was fantastic. One of the better things to happen to the centre of Blackpool for a while. Not a fan of it being cashless but that's the way of world these days.

Enjoyed the vlog, Steve, as always. Looks exactly like the mall nr where I live, the Derbion in Derby: soul-less, characterless, homogenised. Sad 'cos there are loads of long-established, independent, and family-run shops just a 5 or 10min walk away. A quick question, pal: how the **** do you manage to avoid getting collared by security while filming so effortlessly?!? It's impressive! 👍

I can just imagine Stephen dancing to the Lou Reed beat, in fishnet and tutu, flashing his beard under an immense blond wig. Holly came from Miami, F.L.A. Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A. Plucked her eyebrows on the way Shaved her legs and then he was a she She says, "Hey, babe Take a walk on the wild side" Said, "Hey, honey Take a walk on the wild side"

Who remembers the Blackpool auction shop scam...? How the scam worked, was to reel people inside the doors at a certain time, thinking they would get a playstation or perfume etc etc.. for £5 upwards, the shop would be packed with willing people participating, the auction would start & a few planted people in the audience would look like it's a bargain, most people would part with £30+ & end up with a bag which you wasn't allowed to open till the end... & When you did you had about £5 worth of goods in the bag... & Everyone was hurried out of the doors at the end, baseball bats would often come out from the auctioneer's (scammers) if anyone complained... This happened not just in Blackpool but up & down the UK in the early to mid 90s, & many people got conned unfortunately.. I guess the saying "if it's too good to be true, it usually is!" Great vlog as always Stephen 👍

@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool I went to one Stephen, luckily although I was quite young, early 20s I think it was the year the Blackpool tower was painted gold... I could see through the quite sophisticated scam, but I never forget an old lady nearly in tears outside after being scammed of her money, never forget it.. & yes everyone was pushed out of the store as fast as possible.
