Great job finding and working on this beauty. Mine is a 90 in Ice Blue Metallic. When Arthur was new, I started as I meant to go on with him. Spring and Fall, he gets washed with Palmolive dish detergent, immediately followed by Mother's California Gold. Every Fall he gets Krown Oil Spray. After 31 of our very salty winters, there is virtually zero rust. The paint cleans and shines almost like new, except were a shop was careless and splashed brake fluid on the roof and hood. It is not clear coat failure, as the marks are sharp and clearly defined. I didn't know immediately, but a couple weeks later, the paint was lifting. That was the first time Arthur got washed more than twice a year. It is amazing how well these cars stand up to almost anything. The reason for Mother's is it was the only wax in 1990 that specifically said it was good for clear coat paints. It works so well I never changed.

California weather continues to AMAZE me with the ability to preserve cars. You can leave one outside for 500 years and not have a speck of rust. Unlike those of us in the snow belts. Oh, Florida too.

It does all depend on the ability to drain water. My white '69 164 is rusted where the leaves and moss never saw sunlight and the water just collected in the corners. That being said, Volvo made some effort to preserve the cars knowing the world is a cold and snowy place so they do already have the advantage, but it only goes so far.

I purchased a new 1979 240 DL. Had it for 14 years. Sold it to a family member who had it for another 6 years. In addition to that, I bought a 1987 745 GLE in 1989. Gave it away 4 years ago b/c I could not get it started. Great car! It was my favorite. I was mentally crushed when Ford bought the Volvo company. It was never the same, IMO. Finally, I bought a new 1993 850 GLE 5-speed brand new and kept it 10 years.

Hands down the best car I have ever owned. I sold it when I got a company car. To this day I regret selling it. Best winter car ever made. It was like a tank in snow.

One item that is worth doing is replacing the clutch fan with an electric - did it on every 240, 740 and early 940 I have owned. Quieter, better throttle response and it helps the car come up to operating temperature faster. Also takes a load off the water pump bearings and makes access to the pump and belts that much easier. That and an A cam if you can find one, the anemic M cam really makes the car a bit of a dog especially with 114 h.p. on tap through an automatic. With a few upgrades that do not cost too much the 240 can be much more fun to drive - going with IPD sway bars is a big plus and they look great with the GT Virgo wheels as well. Bilstein touring shocks are a good choice without spending too much.

Nice wagon. My father in law had a 245, 1978. He sold it. And now is sitting out side the house of the last owner, and he doesn't want to sell it. I think I will insist. I own an XC90 2.5T AWD 2007. My wide has an XC90 T5 R-D 2014. We are a Volvo family.
