Shooting the Mosin Nagant out to 600 yards -- with open sights!

A video just for fun. I bumble around a bit finding my holds and elevation settings on the ladder sight, but eventually work out firing solutions out to 600 yards.
The Mosin is an extremely fun gun to shoot, and fairly accurate. It has an excellent set of adjustable notch and post sights that make this a lot easier than it would be with the sighting systems on some other old battle rifles. A few years ago, the ammo I'm shooting today was approximately $0.20/rnd. Now it's closer to $0.70 (which is about the going rate for 5.56 ammo) but it's actually available has a whole lot more punch. For comparison, this 147gr FMJ is traveling about 2850fps, for an energy output approximately equivalent to the .308 Winchester. This gun hasn't made it into the deer blind yet but that may change in 2021.

Those who say bad things about the Mosin Nagant have never settled into shooting one. They are crude, loud, but effective and more accurate than most realize.

yeah, it's always annoying when someone says " mosin is trash" just because they can't handle the minimalistic design and strong recoil.

91-30 Mosin sights are in Meters. Arshins were on the old Kovalev sights on M91's. Mosins do have issues, but accuracy is not one of them. And c'mon, the recoil aint THAT bad. 30-06 is worse. Oh and I do find myself working the bolt lefty. Believe the Finns did that too.

Try shooting the same round out of the Mosin carbine. Then I could understand the recoil complaint. The 91/30's recoil pales in comparison.

Great video and fun to watch! Had the rifle been re-zeroed since being imported? If not, they were factory zeroed at their arsenal with bayonet on. This could be what is throwing off the settings on your slider. As you have discovered, it is in meters, but you must affix bayonet to maintain barrel harmonics. Impressive shooting though and fun to watch you having fun. (Edit) In addition, you were using correct grain weight that was use by the Soviet arsenal to zero.

As far as the mosin being painful to shoot, using a rubber recoil pad can seriously help mitigate felt recoil. When I first got my mosin I could shoot 10 rounds and my arm would be bruised to shit the next day. Once I swapped to the rubber recoil pad I could shoot my mosin all day long with no issues. It’s not a permanent modification either, just unscrew the old metal plate and replace it with the rubber one. Or you can also get a padded sleeve to go over the metal plate. Anyways, good shooting. Thanks for the video 👍

I like that you used old surplus Russian ammo and yet you were able to hit at 600! Amazing. If you had a spotter and more time, based on what I saw you would be hitting 8/10 at 600. Amazing! I have one manufactured in 1933 that I refurbished and it looks new. I shoot it out to 200 with iron sights and it blows folks away with scoped ARs to see an old guy like me with glasses and my old Mosin consistently hitting the man-size at 200 yards.

The sight ramp is set for meters and not yards, Your aim was probably spot on but being in meters is why you were shooting high, You could buy a taller front sight post and file it down and re zero at 100 yards on #1 for a more point of aim, point of impact zero.
