Shooting the Frankenstein Muzzleloader
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I am shooting the Muzzleloader I built from an InvestaArms stock that had a rusted out barrel and a Thompson Center Renegade barrel that had a hard trigger. This is the first time firing this Rifle and it is not the best group but far better than anything else I've had. #blackpowder #muzzleloader

ALWAYS blow down the barrel after EVERY shot. You DO NOT want a live spark in there when you dump powder down the barrel. l Charlie
Hey brother watching you now got me laughing when you started crying!! It is America we do what we want
Back in the early seventies when I started shooting black powder we all blew down the barrel I've been scolded more than once about that at a black powder shoot you watch my videos I still blow down the barrel good video my friend enjoyed it

I learned muzzle loading in the 70s. I was taught to blow down the barrel after shooting to clear the touch hole or nipple. Only revolvers you can't do it. Anyone yelling at you is an idiot. Blowing down the barrel until nothing comes out ensures no lingering spark will ignite fresh powder going down the bore for the next shot. Muzzle loading is not for idiots.
Two quick things. First, i'm gonna give you a tip that can and usually does make a monster difference in accuracy, which is to use a 'sacrificial patch', which is just a patch that you push in with the ram rod against the powder before you put your patched round ball in or a cast lead bullet. This seals the bore and keeps the hot gases from tearing up the patch on the round ball which allows it to maintain consistent engagement with the rifling down the barrel, or it keeps the hot gases from seeping between the sides of the cast lead bullet and the barrel which will cause terrible accuracy and barrel leading. So just cut a regular sized ball patch, punch it down tight on the powder and then load the patched ball or (unpatched) bullet. Second. That is not a sabot. That is a bullet. A sabot is something that acts as a sheath around a smaller than bore size projectile that engages the rifling allowing you to shoot a 44 or a 45 caliber bullet out of a 50 caliber barrel. A patch on a round ball is technically a sabot (though by regulation in some states it is not considered one for legal purposes which is complex). But it is a sabot. What most people consider a sabot are the modern plastic jackets you can buy to shoot 44 or 45 caliber pistol bullets out of a 50 caliber rifle with. It appears you cast some Lee REAL bullets...those are very frustrating to get accuracy with unless you listen to my first tip...and better than a sacrificial patch is a wool 50 caliber 1/8'' thick ''wad'' pushed down before the bullet. I use those real bullets for hunting and i actually use 2 of the wool wads, stacked on each other, one is pre lubed with melted beef tallow and the other is dry...dry one against the powder...i get 2.5 inch groups at 110 yards and open sites off the hood of my truck with that load (don't shoot black powder off the hood of your truck if you care about the paint job) and i get zero leading of the bore. God bless, take care and good luck hunting, brother. *Oh, and lube that cast bullet if you're not going to use a lubed patch like i do, just smear some crisco, or beef tallow around the bullet when you load it or use 2 sacrificial patches, one that is dry and against the powder and the other that is saturated with lube on top of the first one.
I started shooting muzzle loaders at age 10, in 1981 with a .36 TC Seneca, we always blew down the barrel at monthly matches and at rendezvous in MT and ID, it was very normal to do. Great video. Happy Independence Day!
You are so awesome.. Happy Fourth of July and God Bless the USA!!!! I wish you and your family the best and hope this “Frankenstein “ gives you everything you hope for!!

Yeeehaaw hawkenstein.... I got 3 riffles made up from different parts.....you getting it done now.......75 yards is max for me cause that where my sights still work. Too 5much farther they cover too much target.....your right on blowing down barrel it softens up the fouling between shots.....

HAPPY 4 THANKS FOR GREAT VID
Happy 4th I am new to your channel but am enjoying it so much. I wish I had seen your old video of the rusted barrel when you made it because I have a way to fix that barrel. I fixed one of mine that was rusted. I used some strips of 120 emery cloth taped long ways on an old bore brush to smooth the rust on the riflings. I found the rust on the riflings was hanging up the patch and it was different every shot. After smoothing the riflings with the sand paper the patches didn’t seem to hang up in the barrel and my groupings got back to 6” @ 60 yards. I also got a SS bore brush and scrubbed the barrel good to get the rust in between the riflings. I know it is too late for Frankenstein but maybe this’ll help someone else. I look forward to seeing you do the fine tuning. BTY I started using the plastic sabot 45 cal bullets because I got the best groupings with those. Good luck!
Happy 4th to the family! Glad you got to do what you like to do best. Frankenstein would be proud!!
Happy 4th, let the ride begin on getting that gun tuned in just right, thats half the fun
Happy 4th Peden fam. Justin you had me laughing. Between the blowing down the barrel and the pillow. Hahaaaahaha. Love me some sarcasm. 😂😂😂😂😂
Sounds like the blue jays are ticked off about something.
The thumbnail made it irresistible 😅
I normally put the bead in bottom of the "v" with bullseye on top of the bead. Some fine tuning and I think you will have a good shooter there!
Bang bang ❤🇺🇸🎯👍🎉
I like this muzzleloader! Verry good shooting! I have a Renegade. I prefer a double trigger.David Back.
I also made a Muzzleloader shooting on the 4th of July ! I fired my Traditions 1-66 twist rifle and my CVA pistol both are 50 cal.
Blowin’ down the barrel got their feathers ruffled.
My daddy used to shoot a 54 cal. TC blackpowder. He always told.me to never shoot a blackpowder rifle that was completely clean. He'd always shoot what he called a "fluff charge" to dirty the barrell. He'd shoot his group of 3, clean the barrel, shoot a fluff charge, and adjust the next 3 shots. He'd take the center of the 3 shots and make his adjustments from there. Usually, he'd have all 3 shots almost in the same hole. It might be worth trying...just do a fluff charge first and then do your 3 for triangulation before cleaning and adjusting. He never used a scope on the blackpowder.
Congrats, looks like you got it! Happy Forth to y'all 🙂
Just always remember and never forget when you go to blow through the barrel don't inhale... Long live Frankenstein. Try some different thickness patches for your round ball loads as well as different powder charges till you find the best accuracy. Takes time but that is the fun part. I shoot a Mowery 40 cal with a 390 dia ball and .012 pillow ticking patch. I use the dry patch method. I soak my patch material in a solution that has a few things in it and let them air dry. The moisture leaves the patch which is now impregnated with the lube. Thus a dry patch. Google it you may want to try it.
I weighed my measured loads of powder and found out they were bad inconsistent. Enjoy your videos
Happy fourth of July God bless 🙏
That's meat on the table. Happy Independence day!
Stringing shots up and down is usually variables in the load or ramrod pressure when seating the ball. Flinching will cause a low shot. Too. Horizontal stringing is usually the shooter not placing the butt of the rifle in the same place on the shoulder. Have somebody watch your front sight when you fire the rifle. The front sight should go straight up and back down during recoil. If it whips up to the left or right adjust the fit of the butt in your shoulder until it recoils straight up and back down. When you get it right remember what that feels like so you can repeat it . Thanks you the video.
That called Tennesseans and Kentuckyan dirty shirts because they whipped there guns with there shirt tails during the battle of New Orleans
You might give Thompson Center maxi balls a try. I always had excellent accuracy with them in an old .54 caliber Renegade. I also found that I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn using a sabot in it.👍
that second shot (and it may be camera angle n such) looked like ya didnt quite have the rifle seated in the pocket of yer shoulder and the gun jumped a bit where as on the third looked a lil more seated n less of a jump on the rifle but looks like that rifle is shootin good i agree that it looks like some tuning with loads and adjusting to how it shoots n youll be good to go how much weight did that barrel add to that gun
was polishing the hawken earlier tonight couldnt really sleep my neighborhood sounded like a detroit slum on a saturday night is coming along nicely next will be refinishing the stock and making the barrel look better

Just make sure you clean her really good before you put it up. And I Love Muzzleloading. Has a lot of great information
Happy Independence Day! I do believe you are on to something! Drop back to 60 grains but I believe 65 might be the sweet spot. I might be wrong. You know I don't care if'n you blow down the barrel. Makes that fouling softer anyway.
You might want to try some conical bullets might fly a little more consistently
I think you would have grouped better if you had a more stable rest. I want to get my Traditions flintlock Kentucky rifle sighted in but I lack the space to do it easy. Nice rifle and good shooting.
Try a thicker patch
It that bees wax and tallow. I use beef or lamb with bees wax.50/50 mix. render that kidney fat down. sometimes i use 75 bees wax and 25 tallow. how do you do it?

My smokepole likes 90 grains. Roundballs seem to be the most accurate. I use a brass brush to counter fouling between shots and never blow into the business end introducing moisture that could cause a misfire when bullwinkles steps out.😂 Rubbing alcohol works good too

Justin i am 67 years old. i have been shooting guns all my life, been handloading since i was 10 years old in 1967, been shooting muzzleloaders since about 1973 and i am a nonprofessional gunsmith. but i do not know why a man puts his mouth on the deadly end of a gun to blow smoke out the other end. if i had done that when i was a kid daddy would have taken the gun and i would not have gotten it back till 1996 when he died! LOL,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Man yeah, that's the prettiest fireworks I've seen so far. A ~3" group at 50 yards with iron sights ain't bad for preliminaries. Do you typically see better groups with sabots or round balls? I've only shot black powder a few times and it was only with sabots, so it's all pretty new to me... As ironic as it sounds to say that shooting black powder is new lol

@@SpiritoftheOutdoors I tried casting some lead into some spent 30-06 brass cut to like .65" and they were dropping at around 220 gr. I watches some videos of people running those through like a .243 sizing die and getting a cool looking shoulder on a 45 cal homemade jacketed bullet. I'm probably gonna start tinkering again with that when it cools off a bit and try and use sabots for them to see how they do
@carltonbailey3498

The accuracy of the different projectiles usually depends on the rate of twist of the rifling of your barrel, a slow twist say 1 in 60 in or more is designed for patched round balls, bullets, and sabots shoot better in fast twist barrels, most TC were 1 in 48 twists that are supposed to give acceptable accuracy with either projectile, ( or Not )!

Learn your gun and that barrel will cloverleaf at fifty yards
your way overloaded, half your powder is burning after it leaves the barrel...the powder charge has become part of the projectile.lower your charge you'll get more velocity and less kick...also..your gun is shooting with more consistency as the barrel fouls..dramatically...if your shooting round ball try a thicker patch if your shooting a bullet try a little larger caliber or pure lead.try this as a starting load,130 grain round ball, divide by 5,equal 36 grains BY VOLUME not weight do the same with a bullet, 400 grain bullet divide by 5=80 grains BY VOLUME, black powder comes in different granulations, FG, FFG, FFFG, FFFFG ffffg by volume will weigh more then FG by volume because it packs in denser.
