Another great feature from Cap-Ball. It is almost impossible to find this quality of information on the Web. This gentleman should be writing articles for "Guns of the Old West". Or any other highly rated American gun Magazine. How he comes across these old guns in Hungary is amazing.

I used to have in 1860 army replica, it was a beautiful gun and fun to shoot.

Good 'ol Colts patent repeaters of heavy pocket caliber! I love m! as I previously stated, I was quite surprised at the power of the little pocket masters! My favorite is the Colt Authentic BP Series Pocket Navy I have. It, strangly, has an oiled stock. Not the varnished type they typically have. Colt did strange things like this. Back in the day as well with the 80s production models. Anyway, I panicked a little when I mistakenly damaged the bluing while cleaning it. I ordered and received a 'replacement'. It has the varnished stock. It s b e a u t i f u l ! New in the box and in a condition as if it were never even handled!!!

Hi, a very informative and interesting video of the 1862 Pocket Navy, Thank you for posting your video. The Uberti Colts have a reputation of having the arbor too short where the wedge changes barrel/cylinder gap with different wedge pressure. I epoxy a couple of brass washers on the end of the Uberti arbor and file down the washer end until the gap is perfect and doesn't change no matter how much the wedge is hammered in. Right on Richard! Great idea. That stupid base pin/barrel headspace issue is r e a l l y an issue in the larger pistols!

Bravo for Uberti for the attention to detail making for a very faithful reproduction.

I noticed that you were loading the revolvers without noticing where the Sprew of the cast lead ball was on the side of one of the one you loaded on camera for the repro. that could really change where the round lands, from what ive experienced with my flintlock rifle.

Wonderful! Keep it up! Have you noticed how the plunger on the new Police travels further than the Pocket Navy? This results in a power and accuracy differences. I have 2 each of the new Police and Pocket Navy from The Authentic Colt Series. Two I fire and two I keep new. Curiously the original Authentic release models from Colt were going to be 6'' instead of 5.5''. I was surprised as to how powerful these were. I fire the round and elongated balls cast from the Colt molds. 3 pine boards at 50 yards. That s a long card table distance!

***** They make modern reproductions of the conversions. But because of the open top design they are limited to low pressure rounds like 38 special or 44 Colt.

***** Uberti makes open top conversions for 1858 New Model Army, 1861 Navy and 1851 Navy. All for .38 Spec only.

***** Keep in mind that they are only rated for standard 38 Special. Plus P loads are not recommended for them.

***** Well, I feel the same way.

The model is basically an 1851, regardless of the actual year of manufacture. The reproduction marketers went a long way to confuse the issue; sometimes calling 44’s “Navy”, which they never were. Ubertis are very nicely made and well worth the small extra cost over other repros.

is the cylinder gap gas an issue with these black powder guns like they are with modern revolers?

Can you do the 1849 Pocket Revolver? It is Colts bestselling percussion revolver.

Double trouble indeed. I have a Colt 1862 Pocket Navy and Police. I recently obtained the .36 Pocket models. Until then, my only experience was with the .31 Pockets. I was quite surprised as to the power of these larger Pockets. I can see how, in the day, they would have been quite popular!

This video made me get a repro of this revolver. Just curious, what do you think of Pietta pistols in comparison to the Ubertis?

Besides this one, you had done an original vs repro video for the 1858 New Model Army and 1851 Navy... do you intend to do a similar video with the 1849 Pocket too?

Great videos, as always! I am curious. Why did the original Colt's have different dimensions in the chambers? What advantage was this? It would seem , from a manufacturing perspective, a constant diameter, such as on the Uberti, would be better. Also, what advantages does progressive rifling have over modern rifling methods? I've shot many of the reproductions, and their accuracy is quite good. Best regards, MiF

Any chance to get a full load 2F black powder load ( no susbt ) with a 130 Lee or 145 Kaido bullet ? I'm curious about velocity you can get with this as i read with a 79 gr round bullet and 25 gr 2F its about 850 fps

2F by volume, you may be able to get nearly a full chamber. Because of the larger grains, the powder will compress quite a bit. I fire my Authentic Colt with the elongated ball from the Colt steel mold. It is about 145g. FFFg though. 17g. I don t know about fps, but at 50 yards, the ball goes through 2 pine boards spaced 1 1/4'' apart (this was a typical military target for determining lethality. One board through penetrated was considered lethal).

Excellent and fun review. On the fence between an UBERTI or original newer COLT? Difference is >$300 plus. Is the extra cost worth the horse logo?

Good shooting video. However no Pocket Navy, or Pocket Revolver of naval caliber ever left the factory until 1865. Only the Pocket police was manufactured in 1862. The Pocket Navy was hastily produced after the fire in the Colt Factory in 1865.

+16williamm Here in the US, because these are not listed as "Firearms", but antiques, or replicas of antiques... you can order them to your house. In Canada, they are treated like actual handguns and require the same amount of paperwork. Either way, they are common here.

The New Model Pocket of Navy Caliber, there s no documentation showing it before 1863 . Whereas, the Creeping Lever Models were all out in mid1860. Colt personally designed the Creeping Lever Models. He doesn t speak of the Pocket of Navy Caliber. It very well may have come out after his death. A design by those who took over? Trying to bank on the popular Old Model Belt Pistol design? The pistol shared Serial #s with the New Police. The New Pocket didn t sell as many due to the War and Cartridge era. Btw, the Uberti is a replica (Someone other than the original/authorized maker fakes/copies it) by definition, and not a reproduction (original/authorized maker recreates a specific specimen of a particular model).

The Colt Company later used the common reference to .36 as a navy (not 'Naval') caliber by referring to the 'New Model Pocket...' as having 'Navy Size Calibre'.

The Uberti in the video has right hand twist rifling

I only wish they would produce the 1862 navy as a London model. Steel back strap and trigger guard.

The original performed way better than i expect. So, someone knows how the "caps jam action" problem was addressed back in the 19th century? The caps had a better fit back then?

I had a few original European caps in my hands and they had a tighter fit for sure, but how they worked? Who knows... I am sure that raising the pistol to vertical when cocking it can solve a part of the problem.

Bo Zo I blow in the barrel after each shot with all my single shot guns, but not the revolvers. As even if you have an empty chamber under the bore, the other chambers are still loaded... I don'T think it s safe.

I have a real one all the numbers match and I'm trying to get it appraised

***** Yes I didn't have a permit then and in my state no permit was needed for black powder so it was kinda like the old west but that was over 30years ago.

My original Pocket Navy measures larger in chambers than bore. It is all original parts.

the shape of the grips of the Uberti is not accurate to the original :(

Yeah. Back in the day, these guns had to be made with the best quality/efficiency. Replicas today just don t need to be beyond simply safe. Afterall, no ones life depends upon them. It s just not taken seriously. Even the steel. It s softer and wears out a L O T sooner than the originals. Wedges etc.

Need to start rolling your own paper cartridges...speeds up the reloads.

Oddly, the Police outperformes the Navy. The rammer goes further into the chamber on the police, thereby compressing the powder more. It s more accurate too. Funny. Also, the elongated ball I was using was from the replica Colt style Navy mold. This ball wouldn t fit through the loading space of the P Navy. I got the actual Colt steel mold and this elongated ball goes r i g h t in. Nice. I m going back out soon to resume testing.

@@geffreybolster3780 Nice to read! I just aquired an original untouched Pocket Navy with low serial # and 5.5” barrel. It feels nice in the hand. I don’t know yet if I will start using it or rather go through the trouble to get a licens for a repro, it is required for repros here. It may not be a historically significant model but I really like the small size and light weight of it, and it and the Pocket Police seems surprisingly potent when watching them on youtube.
