Shooting LA JOLLA with The RICOH GRIII and New FILM RECIPES 📸😁
Hey Y'all 👋🏿
I'm back at it again with the Ricoh GR3, and this time I'm shooting La Jolla! This is one of San Diego's most popular areas and the scenery DOES NOT disappoint. I've also been playing around with some film recipes, and I have just the one to capture the amazing SD vibes. I hope y'all enjoy these shots!

I'd try holding the camera differently to get closer shots. You're holding it like a DSLR so you stick out. Use it in snap mode at 2m and hold the camera closer to your body. Quickly compose while walking and press the shutter. Don't stop or be obvious. Never look at the subject. If you're caught, just keep panning the camera upwards like you're shooting a seagull :)

If you are shy to approach people, you should try the Fishing technique where you find a good spot/composition and wait there pointing before people passes by. Btw, didn't know about that app with recipes. I'll check it out.
Congratulations Bray. Genuine and beautiful video at the same time. Very nice 👌🏻
love the shots - thanks for sharing. Royal Supra is my favorite on the GR IIIx. and La Jolla is beautiful 🙏🏻
Nice video. Good work not killing other people's vibe. Excellent pics.
Great vid. Relaxing to watch. Re getting closer, it’s feeling the fear and just doing it anyway. Easy to apologise and give them a cheeky wink.
Thanks! Greetings from Switzerland/ Europe
Great vid!!

The GR III, often considered the sleeper camera that many GEN Z sleep on lol. When it comes to getting up close to people's faces, it can feel a bit intrusive, especially in 2023, especially if you're not in a crowded city area. In such locations like Jollla, setting up your shots and waiting for subjects to wander into the frame can be a better approach. Just have the confidence to as you are capturing the scenery. Be the three that is already there and provides a shade to those who wander 😂. Also just heads up I think the GR has a 70 or 75mm converter if you want to be able get that “close up”
The best tip I can give you for getting closer to people, is to just do it 🤣 I remember what it was like when I first started getting into street, it was terrifying. But you kinda just go for it. Try to have a compliment or something kind to say ready if they notice you, and also have a kind smile. Generally most people are fine to deal with haha it also helps a lot to start practicing this during big events, where people are taking pictures already. Then it’s almost expected and they react perfectly fine. Being sneaky stealthy about it can get you into some awkward situations if they catch you. Why hide it if you’re not doing something bad? But yea it just takes practice to get used to it 👍🏻
A lot of these photos you showed were solid! Good stuff and I enjoyed the video

My tip for getting close to people would be, dress nice (people won`t mind you if you look sharp), loose the yellow ring and replace it with the black one (the yellow circle will draw undesired attention to your camera hence people noticing it). act relaxed and be candid.

The Ricoh recipes, are something completely new to me, I used to post process my shots with saved recipes using Snapseed, so it’ll be interesting to see how they compare
I just shot La Jolla a month ago... and I'll def be back. Remem 28mm is wide... you don't have to hold the camera out so far to frame. Full press SNAP focus while on the move. The GR is so small that no one will really notice nor care. I'm heading back out that way soon --- maybe we can get some reps in. Subbed! @freshouttafocus

Brilliant shots and the colors are absolutely gorgeous! I knew about the size and the well touted image quality, but did not appreciate the world of film simulations that are offered with this small wonder. I hear you mention the 28mm fixed focal length but I think the camera comes in a close to 50mm (40mm) variant, if you had to do it again would you opt for that focal length over the 28mm?
@BrayGrayy
2 ай бұрын
I probably would get the 40mm. The focal length I typically default to is 50mm, so that would make more sense for me.
@Cthames123
2 ай бұрын
@@BrayGrayy I hear you. I am a 50mm person myself, (…and honestly a 24mm and a 90mm person as well!). 40mm is close to a middle ground between 35 and 50, with the biggest draw back in my mind being selfies are out of the question. I wonder if one can get an easily modified third party adapter to apply focal length magnification without compromising quality to this Rico Gr iii fixed lens camera.

Hi Bray. Great video and some beautiful shots. I don't know anything about the recipes; do they just affect the JPEGs? If yes, do you still capture RAW alongside the JPEGs? Thank you.
@BrayGrayy
10 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, the recipes do affect the JPEGs if you want the look already baked in, but you do have the option to shoot RAW images if you want to do some additional editing.
Did you record any videos with the camera? I'm trying to figure out if this would be a good camera for videos while on vacations. Thank you!
@BrayGrayy

Honestly, I don't think this camera is great for video. I think you'd get much better quality from your smartphone.
Hi guys, i really want to know which one is good camera between ricoh gr III or sony rx1000 mark VII? I love camera with good autofocus and stabilizer.
@BrayGrayy
8 ай бұрын
Though I haven't used any Sony RX cameras, if the ZV1 is any indicator the autofocus will most certainly be better on the Sony. The Ricoh GRIII isn't known for it's autofocus but rather it's snap focus, which is more manual focus-centric
Hey what's action camera did you use? was it go pro?

Battery life is brutal but you can pick up decent no name batteries for fifteen dollars or so. They're tiny. Not ideal of course but the camera itself is so good, I can accept.
Can you apply film simulation after the shot was taken ? i mean try out other simulations on that shot
@BrayGrayy
7 ай бұрын
Well, kind of. If you shoot RAW you can tweak the settings used to make the film simulation after the shot is taken to make it look like a different film simulation BUT there isn't a quick apply option

@@Cthames123 It can be done in camera, but it has to be on RAW photos. Honestly, it can be a little cumbersome but with patience it comes out pretty well
@Cthames123

@@BrayGrayy Thanks! While a little cumbersome perhaps a welcome functionality addition. I am a Sony shooter and in-camera editing is not even an option. Can you comment on the level of lens distortion that is introduced? Perspective distortion is a fact of life at 28mm, but barrel distortion (optic quality) plagues many compact lenses with 28mm focal length. I would imagine shooting raw turns off any software distortion compensation the camera may apply to correct the image. Is barrel distortion an issue with raw photos?

In the past, I've found other KZreadrs that seem like they're going to be posting consistently (that are... something other than white people - not a dig to white people) to then find out they only post once a year. You are a creator I'd follow as much as Casey Neistat. I hope you continue to do a fantastic job - 10 out of 10 story telling and presentation. If I can be so bold to ask; Who are your inspirations, if any, when taking photos--or is there a UX designer that influences your work?
@BrayGrayy
9 ай бұрын
I feel you. Honestly, I'm still working on my consistency (balancing work and KZread), but I do have more videos in the works and they'll be coming soon. For inspo, I get a lot of photography inspiration from cinema looks actually. I also follow other KZreadrs like Manny Ortiz and Evan Ranft (and many more). For UX I don't really follow a specific designer, but I usually look to sites like Behance, Dribble, and AWWWARDS for inspiration.

I actually had to keep the aperture pretty high because it was so bright outside and it also helped to keep more of the scenes in focus.
