    Great video, I was already shooting in auto ISO on my 5d IV but didn't realize that I could use exposure compensation at the same time so I've been struggling with the best way to capture the owls I've been photographing as it gets close to dark. Thank you for the video, it's a real help.

    This is a great way to shoot Action, Sports and wildlife. Makes it easy to set the parameters that are important, discovered this after upgrading from a 6D & 5D3 to a 5D4 Shutter Speed = Important to select one thats fast enough for what Im shooting. Aperture = Also very important to ensure I have enough DOF. ISO = Not so important, I just try to keep this as low as possible to get the cleanest image. I also love that you can now use Exposure compensation with Auto ISO (Something that I often said I wanted to be able to do with the 6D, and couldn't) Great video, and very well explained.

    Great tutorial. I don't generally shoot wildlife, but this will be immensely helpful in shooting nightclubs and nightlife events in extreme low light without flash. I can be creative with my shutter speed and aperture without having to constantly toggle my ISO to account for changing lighting conditions. I'm not worried about too high of an ISO since the 5DMkIV has amazing high ISO performance, and whatever noise does find its way in is more acceptable in nightclub photography than it is in wildlife or portraits. Thank you for posting.

    As a follow-up, this video wound up saving my bacon! I had a nightlife assignment for a magazine article, and my Speedlite died 15 minutes into the shoot. My bad for not having a backup, but I had to make do. Normally I do low-power flash to freeze the subject with long exposure for swirling ambient backgrounds. With no flash, I had to use the technique in this video. Not only did I accomplish the shoot and please the client, I wound up getting some amazing stuff that I would not have achieved with the flash. THANK YOU GRANT!

    I agree with you on the auto ISO especially on moving subjects where they might go from underexposed to overexposed. The only two things you really want to control are the shutter speed and dof since subject is moving constantly. From the video I also noticed that you only have CF card and the SD slot is empty. I hope you do use the extra SD slot while you're shooting outside. Cheers!

    A few help notes: to those that bought the Canon 5D Mark IV "with Log", Auto ISO in video mode is not available. If your camera is set to Canon LOG "on", you'll have to work within the range provided. To complicate matters further and I 100% agree with Grant (M Mode and Auto ISO for wildlife is the best method), if you are in Manual (still mode) with Auto ISO enabled, then switch to video mode, you will default to the previously set ISO for Video Mode. When you flip back to Still Mode, your Auto ISO is no longer in place. What carries forward is the ISO from the video mode such as ISO 200 or ISO 400. The user has to manually reset Auto ISO. I've found a series of images then over or under exposed due to this nuance until I troubleshooted the issue to find the culprit. No Auto ISO in LOG mode then is a limitation to be aware of.

    This video is what I was looking for. I have a 5DMK3. So what can I do in this situation? The only way around this I have found is to set the wheel to change ISO and the top wheel for shutter speed. PRoblem is the Aperture stays it 2.8 or whatever to fastest F-stop is. Since I can not exposure compensate in manual mode Auto ISO. Now I know why I can’t figure it out. The camera can’t do it.

It may be that it show up differently on the metre/scale in the 7d2 viewfinder but to make the EC changes just configure the Set button for it just like on the 5Dmk4. You can also use the Q-button on the 7dmk2 and then change it on the rear screen with the Exposure metering field highlighted!

    I think they make a very good pair of bodies, Peter B, I would stick to the 7Dmk2 when the light was bright, and also when subjects where small or far away and you would need to be cropping anyway. Depending on your wildlife lens, I would be looking to make use of the 5dmk4 superior image quality when light levels where lower especially or when subjects come close enough that you have limited need to crop.

    Thank you Grant very understandable and totally enjoy your videos. Question....Shooting in Manual Mode, using Auto ISO. Shutter speed and aperture set by myself. Why is it that my shots are very very dark....almost black? What would cause that? Back and shooting in total manual right now because of that. AUTO ISO doesn't seem to be working on my Canon 7dmkII. ??? Can't understand what's happening?

  • @grantatkinson8108

    @grantatkinson8108

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi bassplayer60, there could be a few reasons. If you are in Manual Mode and have Auto Iso set to On, black pictures may be caused by your selected shutter speed and selected aperture setting creating an exposure that is causing Auto Iso to reach its upper limit. There is a screen in the Red camera menu on the 7D Mark 2 and 5D Mark 4 where you can set the upper parameters for Auto Iso. So if that is the case, and your upper limit is, for example 3200 ISO, and you opt for a shutter speed of 1/640sec and an aperture of f8, and you are indoors, so there is not sufficient ambient light for this requirement to be met at iso settings up to 3200, the auto iso will move the iso to its allowed limit of 3200, the camera will shoot at the shutter speed (which is too fast for your other parameters - aperture and maxed out iso- and ambient light) and each image will be underexposed. To change this either try to lower the shutter speed or open the aperture or increase the amount of ambient light available. You can also change the max iso in Auto to your preference. Hope that helps Cheers Grant

    Nice video Grant. In the past few days I learned more about shooting in manual mode with auto ISO so your video is timely. This technique seems to be the best setup for wildlife photography with more advanced cameras. I love how you can see the light meter in the viewfinder and keep your exposure correct. In the bright sun of Maui what shutter speed do you recommend for shooting humpback whales from a boat? We will be using a 1DX MKII along with the 400DOII lens. We may even put a 1.4 ext. on as well. I'm thinking of shutter speeds of 1000+, like 1000,1250,1600 or 2000 depending on how high the ISO goes and how bright the sun is. Thanks again Grant.

  • @grantatkinson8108

    @grantatkinson8108

    I would work around the 1/2000sec range, specially if the boat engines are running, and the boat has a hard deck which can transmit some vibration. If you are handholding it will help absorb some of the vibration. 1/2000sec should also account for boat movement....if you have enough ambient light that is.

  • @blownaway13

    @blownaway13

    D+ is just an indicator or 'warning" that has to do with how your Canon 5D Mark 4 will process Jpeg images. There are two processing action that the camera carries out if they are enabled, one is Highlight Tone Priority (equivalent to highlight recovery in post-processing), and the other is Auto Lighting Optimizer (equivalent to shadow lifting in post-processing). If you choose to shoot Auto Iso (as I do) then it might not be possible to have both of these two processes taking place in-camera on your Jpeg images (I have both those processes turned off in-camera because i shoot RAW) . Only one of them might be available if you are using Auto Iso?

    Hi Prashant, it is a bit hard for me to know what exactly is different. By 4:36 in the video, I have already set the front dial on my camera to be changing the Aperture if I turn it directly without pressing anything else. The large rear command dial has been set to change Shutter speed when i turn it directly. I think you see the ISO changing because the camera is already in M-Mode on the top dial, and the Iso has earlier been set to Auto, so the ISO value on the rear LCD changes automatically as i change aperture or shutter values? In this configuration, I need to just touch the shutter to 'wake' the camera and start it metering, and then i can directly turn the front dial to set Aperture and rear wheel for Shutter speed? Does any of that help?

    @@MIlw55 If you are on Auto Iso and in Aperture mode, you have two variables that are floating: The iso value and the shutter speed. You will be better off if you are going to shoot in AV and Auto Iso by going into the Red Iso Menu and setting up a Minimum Shutter Speed, and if it is for running dogs then I would wish for at least 1/1250sec or faster. Alternative is to switch to M mode with Auto Iso engaged, and then you choose the shutter speed and the AV you want.

    I'm having a very annoying problem with the auto ISO behavior of my 5D Mark IV : it is very reluctant to climb in ISO and tends to stay in rather low settings while compromising the speed, and even setting a slower speed than the minimum speed that I set (1/125). For instance, when it should go to ISO 800 and 1/250, the camera choses ISO 200 and 1/80 (The max ISO value in ISO AUTO is set to 3200)

That is when the Menu item called Min Shutter Speed come into play. It is my understanding (i could be wrong) that in M mode with Auto Iso the Iso is directly linked to the camera metering and auto exposure..?

    This method is a very good and fun way to control your camera but there are times, I don't trust evaluative/Matrix metering,works fine in even tonal situations but when subject is a great while egret. And it's in front of very dark or light backgrounds or you're using a zoom lens,the meter will be fooled and suggest a different as setting each time. You zoom in the white bird fills the frame meter suggests stopping down in exposure. You zoom our camera meter suggests opening up exposure. To much of a hassle. I use manual mode and spot meter off a known tone and compensate at that time. Setting my exposure now regardless of any changes in subject composition or zooming as long as my subject stays in this light exposure is great. If lighting is changing then yes evaluative metering and compensation works. It all depends on different scenarios with metering patterns and camera settings. It takes time, practice and patience in every day life as well as in photography.

    Agree with you there on Spot Metering when you have such a scenario as you described. Almost all the places where I go, we encounter wildlife that has more than one tone or colour, or combination of white, black and other tones, which makes using Spot metering harder for me to use. But both Metering methods are effective, Evaluative and Spot if you have an idea of how they function, and there is always the Histogram to help me..
