    I go to the gun makers fair at Dixons muzzleloading shop every year. They have some super high quality rifles all hand made from scratch. Well worth a visit if your into muzzleloaders. The rifles you show here are high quality. Good shooting for tough conditions.

    I own a Tvm rifle and my bore is perfectly seasoned. I highly recommend Butch's black powder bore shine. It completely neutralizes the corrossive properties of black powder and gives you a clean barrel. Followed with bore butter you'll have a beautiful, well seasoned and clean barrel.

    I know that this video is 7 years old and I just stumbled upon it. When at the range I run an alcohol swab down the barrel followed by a clean patch after each shot. The alcohol patches are those that a person cleans your arm prior to giving you a needle. They are very inexpensive and are available at your local pharmacy. The alcohol quickly evaporates and does not foul the powder.

    Great video, I try to make it to Dixon's Gunmakers fair every year. I am lucky living in north eastern PA its only a 45 min drive. Sadly Dixon's is the only place that seems to sell true black powder anymore. BTW what kind of powder do you guys use? I have been using GOEX for years with great results. Some say the Elephant or Swiss powders create less fouling but I have yet to try them.

    When you prime the pan, how much powder do you load and do you tap the gun to let the powder into the touch hole or do you keep the powder away from the touch hole? I keep getting the fuse effect, not sure if it's the location of my priming powder or how much I'm using

  • @UncaBill1

    @UncaBill1

    7 жыл бұрын

    In general it is good to prime the pan up to just below the touch hole (sunset position) and keep it level or even a little away from the hole if you've been carrying it around hunting - just give the lock a tap from the right hand side. That way the flash doesn't have to burn down to it. The less the better. Four F (FFFFG) is faster in the pan than a coarser powder you may have loaded in the barrel. It is good to use a vent pick to poke a hole in the barrel powder to expose more surface of the load grains to the flash. My Tennessee Mountain rifle with Durs Egg lock goes off as fast as a percussion (it seems) with no lag at all from click to bang - I don't even hear the lock!

    1. Shoot it 2. Use a bulle puller, it's basically a long screw that attaches to your ramrod that you can use to pull out the ball 3. Use a co2 discharger, basically a co2 can that attaches to your touchhole and releases the whole can of c02 at once to push the ball out. 4. Lol my cheap college student method, pick at the ball with a small object after removing the vent until it becomes to small to stay in and it just falls out. Obviously only when there is no powder lol.

    Try powder graphite on your patches with your ball. You'll be surprised how many shots you'll get without cleaning the barrel. It lubes it nice and every time you load it it's as easy to load like the first load with a cleaned barrel. I've been using it since I've found out about it and it hasn't felled me yet. Don't be afraid to make the patch black. No such thing as too much graphite. I put my patches in a zip lock bag poor graphite in the bag and shake it until all my patches are black and I stick extra in the bag. Your fingers will be black but you'll be able to shoot a lot with out cleaning and it does help the cleaning process after your done. Try it let me know how you like it. I love it. An older gentleman told me about it and he's been shooting flintlock for over forty years.

    +flyfishjones use a ball screw. it looks like a sheet metal screw with a brass disk on it the size of the bore, this keeps the screw centered in the bore. so. first if you have it, put some bore cleaner (balistol or whatever you use) then attach the screw to your ramrod. Most rods are tapped 8-32 though TC likes 10-32 for some reason. you push and turn the screw into the ball a few turns. then clap the end of the rod in a vice or use a something to hold the rod tightly and pull the ball out. the prelube you put in will make it really pretty easy, the hardest thing is to hold onto the rod. ALWAYS, ALWAYS MAKE SURE THERE IS NO CAP ON THE NIPPLE OR POWDER IN THE PAN AND THE GUNS ARE NOT COCKED, JUST TO BE SAFE, SAFE SAFE...............

    I use a .490 round ball with 80 GN of Pyrodex With a .015 patch in My Traditions Hawken Rifle and I do not have any problems with large amounts of fouling no matter what the weather is. That is why Pyrodex is better then Black Powder. Using more then 80 GN of powder does not improve anything.

  • @TheNickathome

    @TheNickathome

    8 жыл бұрын

    You're obviously using a percussion gun. Pyrodex is not recommended for use in a flintlock. Pyrodex is not better than black powder, in fact its worse. Its much dirtier and is a real pain to clean versus black powder.

    80 GN is a light load. I use 110, and it improves several things, including accuracy out of my Traditions. It also increases range. I'd never say Pyrodex was "better". It isn't. It's just different, and has its own pluses and minuses. For me, if it isn't real black powder, it's isn't muzzleloading you're doing. The same is true for putting a scope on a muzzleloading rifle. Such things are just a way of killing more animals, and if that's your goal, you aren't a sportsman, you're just a killer.

  • @jamesaritchie2

    @jamesaritchie2

    8 жыл бұрын

    There's nothing at all wrong with using Pyrodex in a flintlock. Most hunters I know do just that. The only reason anyone says you shouldn't is because Pyrodex is harder to ignite. If it's a problem, use ten grains of Pyrodex P as the base charge, and then top it off with R/S. Or even use ten grains of black powder as the base, and top that off with R/S.

    Not sure if you're joking or not in all honesty. .50 caliber muzzle loaders have been used for hundreds of years to kill deer, elk, moose, and bear. They're roughly the ballistic equivalent to low-recoil 12ga slugs, but use a solid ball of lead, instead of an expanding projectile. For a black powder gun on small game like raccoon, you would probably want a 20ga or 12ga packed with #4-#6 shot.

    +Lucien Macrose I feel like this sort of thing needs to be open to interpretation and style. There's no "right way" or "best way" to hunt with primitives. Some are using the modern stuff and fancy camo and such. Some are wearing buckskin and hunting with antiques. So long as they follow safe practices and respect the law, there's no downside. I've taken advantage of in-line muzzleloader season and hunted with a 2 year old rifle that rivals centerfires on accuracy. I'm also restoring a late 1700s brown bess and would like to use that same season to take a deer with a 72 caliber smooth bore. And both extremes are great in their own way. Long strap on a possibles bag = easy access and visibility for all your stuff. Short strap = ability to move and even run without it swinging. To each their own.
