His character is what makes the story very unique. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes deceitful, sometimes honourable, sometimes courageous, sometimes cowardly, sometimes wise and sometimes foolish. The book as well as the writrrs of the show have made him exceptional. And rightly that sob demands my respect and i gave him amply. Arigato yabu-sama

Yea i agree, even tho he had one man boiled to death in the first episode, i still liked his character. He was a sadist and that actor portrayed the lack of empathy and other traits that points towards the fact that he is a genuine psychopath fascinated by death very well.

Yoshii Toranaga is the mythical embodiment of the famous japanese warlord, Ieyasu Tokugawa. Seeing Hiroyuki Sanada portray Toranaga is a treat. I wouldn't doubt the success of this series since, in my opinion, its casts are considered big stars in japan and are serious actors: Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira

As someone born back in the 70's, I grew up with the original show with Toshiro Mifune and Richard Chamberlain...loved it sooo much and saw it several times...more than 30 years later comes a remake and I must say although the main story is similar, there are many differences...I'm a huge fan of Hiroyuki Zanada and after being an awesome action oriented side character in many films, now he is the main star and the energy and charisma shining from him in the role of Toranaga is incredible! Like very much the new Mariko also, super devoted to her role...Blackthorne is okay, but actors playing Jabushido and Ishido are awesome in their roles too...New show is in much darker tone, but the level of authenticity and attention to detail is just mind blowing...Once I stopped comparing both shows, I started to truly enjoy the new one and can hardly wait from one week to another for the next episode...

And none of what I said is wrong, female samurai or warrior fall in the same category. As the word samurai means “to serve” In Japanese “samurai” is a strictly masculine term. FEMALE SAMURAI WARRIORS it’s the literal translation of the word “Onna-Bugeisha” or “Onna-Musha” both fall into the same category. So, it doesn’t really matter if I say female samurai or warrior. Agree but at least it's much better than Memoirs of a Geisha using Chinese or Korean actors

@@oysterman962different era. It came out 20 years ago. Back then Hollywood did a piss poor job at hiring minority actors. Also, in that time period marketable Asian actors were mostly limited to Chinese. Nothing wrong with that, just how things were at the time. There still, are films and shows where the character and actor’s ethnicities do not match. Again, not always a bad thing depending on the story they’re telling. For Shogun - a story based on one of the most if not the most critical time periods of Japan - had they not used Japanese actors for at least the main speaking characters the audience would’ve torn it apart.

@@jyc313 Yes, ethnic casting is getting better for asian films as the pool of asian actors is larger. However, not all other ethnicities are correctly represented even in modern times. Often Central or south American roles for example are played by anyone with a latino appearance, including Italians or Spanish. It also still depends on many other factors, such as whether actors want the role, whether they are involved in other projects, contracted with one film company, can even speak English, or look too asian! for Western audiences at least. Bruce Lee for example had many of these aforementioned barriers. The director may also have a certain actor in mind but can't afford them within the film's budget or the actor doesn't like the script. In Memoirs of a Geisha, almost the entire female cast was non Japanese; noteworthy and specifically, Chinese. But as you suggest, they were popular with the mainstream audience being from an extremely successful Hollywood endorsed Chinese film at the time, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. More than likely that Memoirs was cashing in on the momentum from the popularity of those actors. I disagree there weren't enough notable Japanese actors available 20 years ago to cast in at least some of the key lead roles. Other films, such as The Last Samurai or Kill Bill had real Japanese actors. Or even the original Shogun TV series used authentic Japanese cast. This version of Shogun, thankfully has been brilliantly cast and the costume and etiquette is painstakingly detailed and exacting of the period. However, I disagree that Shogun has any more reason to involve Japanese actors than Memoirs. They are both adapted from novels written by Western authors. Both sensationalized for western audiences. However, I would say a Geisha is more culturally significant than a Senkogu Jidai Samurai film involving fictional characters loosely based on historical figures, where the artist licence allows for broader scope. In fact, Memoirs of a Geisha is arguably even more controversial that the portrayal of the Geisha was misrepresented as a prostitute and many Japanese female actors would've shunned being involved in that film. That's why I specifically mentioned that Chinese actors were used instead. Consequently, the author was sued by a Japanese lady whom the film's character was based on, for the reasons of misrepresentation. One thing you did correctly mention is that despite all the criticism I have of incorrect ethnical representation in films, one can not overlook the importance of good entertainment and still enjoy a film for what it is. As long as it was not as terribly cast as Mickey Rooney's shocking portrayal as a Japanese character in Breakfast at Tiffany's, or the hilarious Amazing Harry Hoo from Get Smart. .....A sign of the times indeed.

@@oysterman962 thanks for your opinions. Paragraph 1: agreed. It’s all just one step at a time. If Scarface was made today decent chance they’d actually pick a Latino or even a Cuban. Pacino did a great job but looking back a very progressive person can argue his accent was a horrible caricature. To each his/her own. Paragraph 2: partially agree. I didn’t say there weren’t notable Japanese actors. At that time coming from a big studio the actors they chose were simply more “marketable” which your statement of “casting due to popularity etc etc” is saying the same thing in a way. At the time, the mass public may have recognized Ken Watanabe (by face or name) but very few other Japanese actors. Also agreed that Kill Bill is a good counter example. Paragraph 3: I think which one is more significant as a fiction piece can be debated based on one’s perception of both and personal taste. Also personally I didn’t think the movie overtly portrayed the geishas as prostitutes but again that goes back to my earlier statement that it’s a matter of personal taste (and perspective). There are plenty of arguments out there that make great points as to geishas being very skilled and very refined “prostitutes” but of course that would be angering many people. Again, it’s just how people view things. You make good points overall. Paragraph 4: agreed. Also personally I don’t even find your example that offensive. At the time of Break at Tiffany’s casting in such a manner and depicting Asians in such ways weren’t considered offensive. We can say it was horrible looking back from a more refined and progressive era. It’s all just… progress and sometimes it’s two steps back one step forward. Overall I think Hollywood and the mass media industries in general have moved in the right direction with plenty of work still needed. As a minority myself it’s good to see.

Cosmo Jarvis (who plays pirate Blackthorne), is a bad actor. He is a poor choice for the role. He is too pretty and he has the mannerisms and look of Tom Hardy. I don't feel like he has figured out his own style as an actor. And he seems to always have the same reaction to everything he encounters. One dimensional despite his huge role. His lines are poorly written as well, so perhaps it is not all his fault.
