Shoeing a Draft Horse - Tips and Techniques Part 4 (Rear Hoof Shoeing)

Michael Wildenstein, Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF), demonstrates the steps to shoeing the rear hoof of his Perchron Pat.
MIchael begins this lesson with an explanation of when and why one uses horse shoes with shoe clips. He shows the toe clip, quarter clip and side clip shoes. One uses these clips because they
stabilize the shoe
take stress off the horseshoe nails
The rear hoof tends to shift towards the inside and also needs more traction. The horse shoe clips help with this.
He then explains the different types of horseshoe nails and that nails are made specifically for a type of shoe to fit tightly.
E-Head horseshoe nails - square
City Head horseshoe nails - rectangular
Then Michael goes through all his farrier tools and explains what they are used for:
Tongs - sized for the thickness of the shoe
Hot tongs - holding shoes hot out of the forge
Punches
Pritchel
Creaser
Shoeing box (farrier tool box on wheels)
Hammers
Anvil (wide horned for horseshoe shaping and large wide base to fit
shoes. He recommends 150 pounds or more.
Vice
Safety Glasses
Hoof pick and brushes
Hoof knife with pick
Loop knife for cleaning the frog
Rasps - new ones used just on hoofs
older warn ones for rasping cold metal
oldest ones for rasping hot metal.
Large butcher brush for brushing slag and cleaning used shoes.
Michael demonstrates using his forge and anvil to reshape his Percheron Pat's rear shoe to fit perfectly. He then rasps the shoe to clean it up and bevel the horseshoe edges so they will not do any damage to the horse.
Next Michael applies the horseshoe in the following steps:
1. Apply the shoe and hammer nails partially in place.
2. Nail shoe nails in completely.
3. Use clinches to make sure nails are at
90 degrees to the hoof.
4. Use rasp to file all the nails to the same length
5. Using clincher, bend all the nails down to tighten.
6. Complete the job with a final rasp to smooth everything.

I watched this series again. I am in my 3rd week of tge farrier course in surry bc. Kwantlen polytechnic. I rode with a farrier today we shod drafts at Stanley Park in Vancouver bc. Thanks again. U appreciate tour teaching and wisdom.
If I ever choose to own a horse I will be very greatful for your helpful learning video about knowing how to put a horse on good shoes. Thank you very much and let see what Gods purpose for me.

Usually horse owners would not put shoes on themselves. They would call a farrier like this man to do it as it is a long learning process and needs lot of experience :) Have a great day :)

I don't know how I got here, but it was a pleasure to watch and learn from such a skilled blacksmith. Years ago I did some show jumping and hunter pace events, but never set a shoe.

Interesting. Doing a deep dive on hooves tonight lol. Do horses seem to care about their new shoes? Do they seem to like them, or dislike them? Like, I wonder if they realize what is happening when they are being shoed.
I use to eliminate the toe clip and i make side clip for preferences for draft horses, with drilltex, cada viejito con su librito, saludes paistro Herrero

I nailed iron on over thirty thousand horses most of it was done in 17 years the rest of it was done the last 20 years only horses that I've had in cutting horse training one thing I noticed about you during your horse was that the middle of your shoes should always be at the point of your frog and yours is to the side

I've enjoyed watching a tradesman at work, I don't have a horse I'm just passing,but learnt something today, not to buy a horse.
Does the horse get to pick what color polish he/she wears???
How long does it take to change a horseshoe on all four legs?
How often is a horse re-shoed?
How much does it cost to shoe a horse? Do they get paid per shoe, yearly daily?
So, why the leather inserts on the front but not the hind hoofs? This guy seems like the type of person who doesn’t do anything without a very good reason.
