ShockWiz Review - How my riding changed after using Quarq's mountain bike suspension tuning system.

Спорт

Today we look at Quarq's ShockWiz Suspension Tuning System.

I used these devices to tune my mountain bike suspension, and the results surprised me. In a couple days, my fork and shock were dialed, and I felt like I was getting the best out of my new Santa Cruz Bronson. The price on the ShockWiz devices ain't cheap, but if you're lucky enough to have a cool bike shop like The Path, they'll have them for rent.
ShockWiz is compatible with most air-sprung suspension and works for any type of rider. You connect the device to your shock or fork using the shrader valve. The companion smartphone app helps you calibrate ShockWiz and lets you decide what kind of tuning option you want.
It's clear that there was a lot of thought put into how the ShockWiz works and the results are spot on.

    The ShockWiz from Quarq helped me get my suspension dialed quickly. I'm curious what other techniques you may have used to tune your mountain bike's suspension. Also, I would dig hearing any experience you may have had with the ShockWiz. 🤘🏽

    So I really liked the SockWiz. No options to rent them here but I've loaned mine out to a few people. I used to be so bad at setting suspension. I just loaded the bike with air and set the rebound in the middle. After playing around with the shockwiz, I've slowed down the rebound and backed off the air pressure. I did find it hard to get the DPX2 adjusted so that took a few different rides to get dialed.

    That's a great idea to rent these out! I'll have to check some shops around me. It's especially hard to dial in my fork when I don't have experience or feel of how it SHOULD be. Nice hill bomb👌

    Yeah! Hopefully the shop in your vids has them. Would dig seeing your experience if they do. And you’re absolutely right about knowing how the suspension SHOULD feel. As a beginner, I honestly didn’t really know how much was poor riding and how much was poor setup. Not that it stopped me from making bad decisions on bikes. 😆 Glad you dug the hill bomb. 🤘🏽

    Subbed from this vid. I'm an intermediate to advanced rider. Hardtail, to rigid , now on full squish Remedy. It took me 3 years to start getting my suspension dialed but have learned a lot. This device would have made that MUCH easier, but, I'm not sure the cost (short of renting) would make it that beneficial for me long term. I kind of lean to the thinking that once you get the "feel" of what you like, setting up future bikes would likely come much easier. Maybe, maybe not. Either way. Great video and thanks for sharing your experience.

    Yo. Thanks for the support! Glad you dug the vid. I agree that after riding a while you do get a feel. What I started wondering for myself is how much was I using my tuning to compensate for bad habits or skill gaps. And how much better of a ride would I experience with a “prescribed” tune. Though I had to adjust my riding style to match the “playfulI” tuning, I definitely enjoy trails more now. But I guess it also depends on what you wanna do with your riding. I’m always looking to progress and go bigger. TBH, the more I think about the ShockWiz the more I think about buying one. 😆

    I’m really curious to try one. I’d like to see what the data says. I never feel like my suspension is dailed, at least for too long. Might also be my local trails are all pretty different and want a different feel for each. I think I also just suck at interpreting feel. There must be a mtb disorder. Ha! Great vid man.

    I’m not the most sensitive rider. But until using ShockWiz, I wouldn’t make any major changes. And little tweaks were hard to notice when I was starting. Also it’s hard to know how much is just in my head. So getting more objective feedback was helpful. TBH, I was apprehensive about suddenly adding volume spacers and making both the shock and fork more progressive. But as you saw, the proof was in my cheesin’ grins! 😆

  • @mtb_alan

    @mtb_alan

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Stem was 50 and I came down to 35mm. This was part of setting it up to be more playful. Full honesty though, a friend recommended it, I thought I’d try it and see if I liked it. I liked it. 😆 Feels like I can get better pulls on jumps. And when pointed down a steep section, I feel like I can be more aggressive and stay closer to the front-center. Also, I am at the shorter end of medium. So the shorter stem just makes the bike fit me better. Hope that helps.

    Rented a pair to sort my Scott Genius LT 700 tuned plus: Made a massive difference. Im not an experienced MTB rider, I didnt get into them until I was 53, but have a history with motorised dirt bikes so I kind of knew it didnt feel quite right on factory recommendations. Spent a day at bike park gathering feed back from the shockwiz and making adjustments through the day completely transformed it. Thing is Ive now bought a Scott eRansom and Im wondering if it will still give good feedback, given the extra weight and the completley different up hill input.

  • @mtb_alan

    @mtb_alan

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's great! As far as how well it'll work with an eMTB... A heavier bike is different than a heavier rider, but the difference are more in moving the bike around. The Shockwiz though is only concerned with how sag, compression, and rebound interplay. Physics being physics, I imagine it'd work just as well on an eMTB.

    Hey Allen nice vid! So question. First off I mean no offense whatsoever with this and I love your channel and the content you make! Ok so would you say coming from an intermediate/advanced rider who’s not an expert or pro it’s worth the investment to do some very detailed suspension work like the shockwiz even if the rider isn’t always riding intense double blacks and racing worldwide? Sorry for the long comment but I’ve already been considering something like this and it would really help to get your opinion on it.

  • @mtb_alan

    @mtb_alan

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey there...great question. And the answer is tricky. If we just talk about how quickly you can tune your suspension AND learn about your suspension, ShockWiz would benefit an intermediate rider the most. Most intermediate riders are in a place where he or she has developed some idea of how and what they like to ride. This person would benefit most from understanding and tuning their suspension to their style. Is it worth 330 bucks? To me, this is often a resource question. The ShockWiz seemed to be durable, and it's not like physics changes, so the way the ShockWiz makes recommendations will be relevant for a long time. So, it's worth it if you have the resources to purchase a device or two and maybe also have a community who could also benefit from borrowing (or even renting) the device from you. But! If you have a shop like The Path where you can rent ShockWiz, that's probably the best option for intermediate riders. I hope that helps!
