For those who don't know, the DS&S discount is based on only two factors: average annual mileage, and whether you speed above 80+ MPH. My wife and I are excellent drivers, have a score in the high 80%, and yet get < 1% discount from DS&S on our daily driver due to average mileage (est. 20k miles per year). I followed up with my agent, and they confirmed that the State Farm advertising is misleading. "Good driving" is irrelevant (except for speeding above 80+ MPH). Drive less, save more. That's it.

The term savings is relative and I saved 600 for 6 months just leaving State Farm 😂.. they kept increasing my rate year over year.

Figured. But thinking about it realistically, driving is inherently dangerous because of the variables, ie other drivers being dumb. The only way to reduce risk is to reduce time spent driving period. Makes sense, but their ads are deceptive at best, maybe fraudulent if a good lawyer goes after them.

It doesn't work this way anymore. Now it uses your driving "behavior". Mine is wrong 80% of the time. It's not really worth it at all anymore.

Great video, as it tracks your whereabouts, am I able to get a screen reading or priint out of where my vehicle has been?

What if you top out your car at 175mph+? Will they use that data to straight up drop you? If they can’t increase your rates from the data. Can they use it to consider insuring you period or even evaluate their liability with you and give you a custom rate for future cars you insure?

Just signed up for the program. As for the Toyota, our agent explained that the minimum discount was 1% even if it "hates" the way you drive. He also mentioned the driving over 75mph might trigger it. If you're in Texas, there are plenty of highways where 75mph+ is a legal speed limit. I'm just going by what the agent said though. We'll see in ~6 months how things look.

When the speed limit is 75, then its a factor of the % over that. 75 in a 65 would definitely be reckless driving.

I receive several false readings on the app. Sometimes I'm not even in my car or parked with the engine running. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, it gives a low rating for breaking. Also, it is questionable if I am receiving any discount at all. It's like they jack up your premium price, and then apply some discount to make it appear you are saving money. My regular 6 month premium runs about the same as it did before DSS. When I call my agent, I got a lot of mumbo/jumbo, but no proof I had saved anything, just a lot of convoluted justification. I only drive a few hundred miles per year, as I use mass transportation most of the time, and my vehicle is parked.

Same here. Mine was okay in the beginning. Now it gives false readings most of the time. It's turned into a P.O.S. device and program. I hate it now.

I'm curious does that thing work only if your phone that you have it connected to is inside of the car on Bluetooth basically does the phone that it connects to and sends the data to have to be in the car for it to record the data?

I saved $141.46 For my 2016 Buick Regal for the six-month period ending February 2021 just like you. I signed up with State Farm Drive Safe and Save but didn’t check the Beacon. Contacted State Farm about why my trips weren’t being recorded. I’ll check the beacon and replace it if necessary. It’s free. I love this savings program. Thanks very much for your video. I have a problem with it saying I'm going around 5mph more than I actually am going. It does give you a buffer of 8mph over the speed limit which is nice, so I usually go about 5mph over with the flow of traffic, but it seems very inaccurate. I literally set my cruse my control at 50mph in a 45mph, and I have a bunch of dings saying I was going 55mph or more.

I'm about to switch my insurance and start this program. The State Farm agent I'm working with did state that 30% discount is the max for Texas. I'm nervous to switch, but I don't drive much. So, may be worth it.

VERY frustrated -- trying to re-install new beacons -- keep getting the message that says "Sorry, th login system is currently unavailable. Please try again later or call the 24 Hour Good Neighbor Service team toll free...."

I just started using Drive Safe & Save and I have two questions:I see the overall trip score is comprised of 5 parameters (Acceleration, Braking, Cornering, Speeding, Phone Use) Each one has its own 5-part bar graph. According to a review from dadmba, each bar represents an event, or “ding”. If that's true it doesn't make sense to me because it would be unfair to expect the same number of events for a one mile trip compared to a 100 mile trip. Is that really how it works? I would expect the score to be based on events per mile. Obviously getting a perfect score for a short trip is much easier than for a long one.

I used my adaptive cruise control for the first time, the State Farm beacon does not like the way it controls your car. My braking and acceleration went down by 20% the very first time. The adaptive cruise control is considered a safety device and State Farm doesn’t like it..

Do I need a becon for each car ?

Question 2: Does State Farm consider the car you are driving? When cornering for example, a sports car can safely make a turn at a higher speed than a minivan.

No. They take into account the posted speed limit. If the limit is 50MPH on the turn and you are doing 70MPH, you will get a DING!

If you are being dinged for yielding that means you are either hard braking or going too fast in a turn for cornering. If you have a yield you know about you need to slow to a crawl leading up to it. If nothing is coming proceed but go slow so you don't corner fast. If your car is swaying or things are rolling as you make a yield or turn your are not driving safely

I just used it and after 6 months, it saved me 14.7 % on my insurance bill for my 3 cars, so it is worth it. That is driving as normal. $300 saved per 6 months.

How long do you use the beacon for? Do you have to have it on for the full 6 months?

You're supposed to keep your Bluetooth turned on anytime your in the car so it can monitor your driving behaviors. And you have to periodically enter what your current mileage is in the app. So they will know if you are using it full time or not.

But, sometimes i have to go into not safe area cuz my work, will that matter, i have hands free on my car, concerned about what i stated, i have state farm, can you answer or anyone?

How long ago did you get the Supra? The 10% discount is only an introductory bonus for the first six months. So if you've had it longer than that, then it's probably just like you said--it's driven more aggressively, so not really any savings. Cool to see that comparison though!

If I had five cars, this might make sense. I don't want to be tracked just to save $50.-ish dollars on two old cars. And, they sell all the data they collect. That's just me. I thought this might convince me. It doesn't. But, I'm glad this guy is happy.

I'm curious about something re the State Farm Safe and Save system: A few days ago the system failed to record a number of my trips. I took about 5 trips that day, but only one of the trips was recorded. I would take a trip, then stop at a market, taking my smartphone with me, then return to the car and take another trip. I did this about 5 times, but only one of the trips was saved/recorded. I wonder what could cause this. I didn't make any changes to my phone settings. Also... 1] Is there some way for me to test and see if a trip is being recorded? 2] What triggers the end of a trip? Is it when your smartphone leaves the car, or when the car stops moving for a long period, or something else? Thanks.

Go under settings, then battery and device care and then click on battery and then click on never sleeping apps and add Drive and save app to the list there is a plus sign at the top to add an app. Start with that first and see if it works.

I think the device can only be paired to a single phone, so ideally only the driver of the vehicle should be paired. And of course only one tracker per vehicle or the other can disable Bluetooth.

Yes that's how it's supposed to work! Remember you are being graded with a cumulative score over your premium period. The score will fluctuate.

I save about 400$ in 6 months because of this little thing. I don't drive crazy tho unlike alot of people. I was very skeptical at first and I was definitely shocked when they changed my rate. I was shocked how much it went down honestly. I'm still paying off the car I have currently so I have some pretty pricey insurance to cover it so saving money definitely helps me out.

So can you use the GPS without it making a noise for using your phone?

I don't have this on my car yet...just considering it. But that is one of my concerns. I recently moved to a new city and I use voice GPS directions for almost every trip. Yes, I am sure there are workarounds, but the way I used GPS is not with an app and not through the bluetooth in my car...too techy for me, LOL. I don't actually look at my phone, but I do have to have the screen on so that I can hear voice commands, which would be a ding every time. Then I remembered that I have a prepaid cellphone with a different carrier that I keep in my vehicle just as a backup in case something happens to my regular cell phone. I take it out about twice a month, turn it on to make sure it is working, download updates and such, then turn it off and put it back in the glove compartment. So, IF I decide to try the State Farm S&S, I will download the app for that onto my prepaid backup phone and it will NOT have the screen on when I am driving. I will have to make sure to charge the backup phone more often, but that is going to be my workaround IF I decide to give it a try. Or if State Farm insists that I put it on the phone with my main number that is attached to my account, then I will turn the screen off on my regular phone and use the backup as my GPS voice guidance.

How can it tell if you are on the phone?

Finally got a reply about the Beacon today: “I spoke to the Drive Safe and Save help center today. They told me that the only way that you will be able to see your trip log is if you change your enrollment in DSS from the On Star to the DSS Mobile app. OnStar does not track your trips, only your mileage. If you would like to change your enrollment to the Mobile you are required to have a smart phone.” Considering I’ve only used my smart phone ever since I’ve been driving this is ridiculous. Why did they send me the beacon if I wasn’t enrolled in the mobile app? In any case I told her to enroll me because I want to see my trips. She also has to send me the Beacon. More waiting. I’ll update this when I have updates. 😁🚘

Good info. The savings numbers you use... You said at beginning they give you 10% just for signing up. So is it fair to say the Supra gets (10+1) 11% or did I misunderstand? Is it possible they inflate the rate build these discounts in? I ask because my agent who shops my insurance has told me they are on the more expensive end to begin with.

It varies state to state. For GA the initial discount is 10%, and after the 6-month period, it varies anywhere from 1%-45%. This resets with each 6-month period.

Are you doing 100 percent ? What's your average percentage , because I have been doing 100 percent on every trip and it just dropped to 94 percent for no reason I have low mileage,and called them about it , they have no answer for it , I'm looking for a percentage total , let's say max discount for me is 50 percent so if I do say 90 percent what percent discount do I get , you see they need to give us a chart / and give us some kind of hint on what percentage and what kind of discount you get with it .

I’m still in my first 6 month period after getting the beacon. I’m curious to see whether the premium goes up or down based on how my gf and I both drive. Would you be able to show screenshots of the section that shows how you scored in each category during each trip? I’m trying to get a good comparison on what to look forward to. I try to drive pretty good so I can optimize my savings, but my gf gets terrible scores on almost every trip lol I’m trying to get an idea of where hers is going to land

Turn off your phone? I put mine in airplane mode left Bluetooth on, but it still recorded the trip.

Brilliant business move by SF. This will greatly reduce their payouts for lawless driving. They want drivers who strictly obey traffic laws. By following all traffic laws to the T you basically can not be at fault in an accident.

Are you able to use the map app on the iPhone for navigation with this? I've heard you get dinged if your screen is active...

So, if you're in an accident; and they check your data from the beacon....I'll bet State Farm will do their best to deny your claim and drop you by saying the accident was your fault, based on the data!

The cornering is a absolutely rubbish! There's multiple cornering events (same spots) where it's a wide turn and it definitely is not cornering too fast!!! Also you have up to 8mph over without it tagging you.

Now I have read that this unit will beep when you drive at night because... it's dangerous to drive at night. Seriously? I really do not want to hear this thing beeping at at times that I might think it shouldn't. CAn you put it in the trunk?

No it won't. You just won't get as much discount.

Does not work well towing. It dings you in 55 zone cause a side Rd is 35 and thinks your on that. And the IT services are not so good. They blamed issues on my phone for over a month of wasted calls. Till one guy updated the bacon firmware and fixed it. They should pay you for hours worked on their products repairs.

I went from 176$ to 92$.

That's what the agent told me as well when he explained it to me. Thinking about switching to State FArm. He said only measures braking, acceleration and cornering. Nothing else. We use our GPS a lot so reading all this am worried now that it measures cell phone usage. Plus my kids use their phones to bluetooth with their radio for music.

It's not about monitoring safe driving. It's about monitoring unsafe driving, so they can jack your rates up across the board among all the different policies you have with them. If it was ever about safe driving, they'd just send you a refund every year based on your driving record and claims filed.

I consider it a violation of my privacy and I wont use their little toy. I get monitored all the time anyhow and I'm not having State Pharm run behind me writing down my personal business. Nope.
