The King’s Troop Royal Artillery is a ceremonial unit of the Royal Artillery - After the Second World War, King George V expressed the view that, following the mechanization of the last batteries of horse-drawn artillery, a troop of horse artillery should be retained to take part in the great ceremonies of state. Accordingly the Riding Troop was reformed on 17 April 1946 as a six-gun Royal Horse battery for the Household Division. When her father died, The Queen had the troop retain the name the 'King’s Troop’ in honour of George VI. Their uniform is comprised a navy blue tunic with gold braiding, navy blue breeches. The busby is of sealskin with a white ostrich feather plume at the front with a lanyard looped around the busby and a red busby bag, which was used in Napoleonic times to keep dried fruit in! The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery is the Saluting Battery to His Majesty’s Household. It fires Gun Salutes to mark the grand occasions of State, including The King’s Birthday Parade, Royal Birthdays and Births. Commanded by Major John E Baileff RHA, the unit consists of 165 officers and soldiers, being the most diverse regiment in The British Army, with a demographic of 52% female and at last count boasting 9 different nationalities and 14 faiths and Christian denominations represented. It was a gun carriage of the Royal Horse Artillery that bore the coffins of Queen Elizabeth II, her father King George VI, and Princess Diana from Buckingham Palace to Westminster. As the monarch’s Mounted Ceremonial Battery, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery also fires Royal Salutes for grand occasions of State. The King’s Troop is now the only remaining mounted unit of the Royal Horse Artillery. The Troop proudly stands at its barracks in Woolwich, Southeast London, comprised of 170 personnel and 120 magnificent horses.

there are no height restrictions for the household guards other than the height requirement has been brought down to 5' 10" to be accepted - if you're in the King's Company within the Grenadier Guards, you have to be 6' 2" or over - the only restriction within the household cavalry is the minimum height of the horses which is a mandatory 16.2 hands (5'4") high at the withers, but many are often taller -

The first pat is a reward to the horse at the completion of its duty. The second is on the saddle flap and not directly on the horse and is a visual and aural cue to the other riders to synchronise the dismount. It's nothing to do with a shift in weight as is so often wrongly said here. If you look closely, you will notice that the lead rider moves his mount a few paces in front so that the others can see him clearly and respond to the cues. If it was really about a shift in weight they would all do it but it is only the the rider in front who slaps the saddle flap.
