that may be the most useless barrier ever in a race. UCI should fine the organizer but they are too busy checking brake lever angles. absolutely unbelievable to not have a barrier in the correct spot with the rocks and concrete there.

Vingegaard has collarbone and rib fractures. Evenepoel could not move his right arm and was holding his shoulder, so that's probably a fubared collarbone as well... Roglic already had another crash in yesterday's stage and also retired, but was able to stay in his team's car so it seems less serious. Jay Vine and Natanael Tesfatsion (the first rider who lost grip and fell) also had to be hospitalized; Tesfatsion's head barely missed hitting a rock. That's already some nasty injuries here but with that concrete drain, plus the blocks and trees nearby, it could have been so much worse... :(

While UCI approves the races, they don't choose the race layouts themselves, that is the job of the organizer (example for the Tour de France or Paris Nice, it is ASO who have to find agreements with the cities and local authorities for the races to take place). I do agree however that this drain should have been protected. Hay bales, barriers, plastic construction zone walls, whatever, but you just can't leave it like that... :(

the aerial view of Vingegaard being stretchered away is one of the worst things I've ever seen in cycling. He's "only" got broken collarbone and ribs, but it looks so, so much worse in that footage. The lead rider (Landa?) has the correct reaction. He's like, "f**k!". Which is the reaction you want to see. The one you don't want to see is someone attacking.

As a cycling fan, and even an admitted Tadej fan, and I'd hope that like others, we'd want to see everyone be competing at top level for TDF.

.@@luis-oy9bq

#3 rider in the group (on the right of the video) just lost his front tire. Common in motorcycle racing, don't see it much in bicycles. Then, it looks like Vingegaerd loses his front in the same place, causing a chain reaction. I don't think there was any contact prior to that. That would indicate there was something slick on the road.

There are two types of cyclists: those who fall and those who are going to fall. Natnael Tesfazion from Lidl-Trek falls and it is natural that the cyclists behind him dodge or, out of nervousness, also lock their wheels when braking so hard. A runner on the run from Total Energies had already left before. It's not so much the fall but rather it increases the danger with those wide ditches, rocks and trees next to the road. I don't know they can put protection methods along the entire route. First, common sense, attention to cyclists and protection of others due to lack of ambulances and doctors. Falls are part of cycling, this one has "relevance" or they pay more attention to the names but they are all serious. I don't see a problem in the quality of the materials but I do see a problem in the obsession with weight. The bicycles are so light that they give way on descents in the wind and this, added to the athlete's obsession with low weight and lack of muscle, exposes them more to fractures.

Curios which tires they are running. Last few major crashes past few weeks has been the front wheel "slipping" on turns. Riders not on front either. I've ran some tires like velo flex that slipped making a U turn on a street.

@@carboncrank2250 yes, but then the others seem to panic and do not lean into the turn. They hit the brakes and the bike can come out of it's lean. That often happens when you hear a crash next to you or behind. It affects the entire group. Can't tell you how many times I've seen this while racing.

@FreeMTrider it's usually the front wheel from no one paying attention in our races but hard to react accordingly in a split second like that. Hope a quick recovery for these just crazy past few crashes have been some top tier riders too.

I don’t understand: the overhead shot shows a wide road and a non-harsh almost gentle turn rt. Yes, taken at high speed. But innocent looking road there. Perhaps/probably something on the road? Oil? Gravel/dust in same color as the road? No reason to crash on such a turn….does not make sense unless something on road.
