Mine, too. I have lived here for nearly 30 years. Though I live in Winooski and we weren't badly hit, I just want to weep for all of Vermont.

Our hearts go out to Vermont, Montpelier is such a beautiful city! This year has been brutal in Canada as well, but we feel for you!💕🙏🏼🇨🇦

I was there today, Saturday July 15th 2023. The roads are dried out again. Stacks of trash down both sides of all the low lying streets in town. I am sure there is a lot of damage to the buildings, and tremendous losses to people, but at least it is dried out now. The river was about 4' below the banks but still running fast and muddy.

4800 years ago there was an ocean impact that caused massive worldwide flooding. Research Burckle Impact Crater mega tsunami. The Tonga volcano eruption slightly mimicked this even by injecting water into the upper atmosphere and was responsible for the flooding afterwards in Australia and is still impacting everyone globally. We are all in serious danger from volcanoes in the coming years because very large eruptions are expected in the coming decade that can wreak havoc on temperatures, weather, and do severe damage to agriculture. See documentaries about 536 A.D. or the Year Without A Summer, etc. Be sure you have a way to eat and heat your home in the coming years.

My family in lived downtown Montpelier. Heading there to try to help salvage what we can... Please keep us in prayer. A lot of displaced people and not much said about that. No affordable housing, no section 8 HUD.

For context for non native Vermonters, people born there and grew up there OR moved there either before or after doing research on the state are HIGHLY aware of the dangers of flooding. In 2014 there was terrible flooding in Barre that took out a bridge and condemned about 10-11 houses. No one bats an eye. But the reason why this is REALLY bad that I want to illustrate is that our climate, geology, and (what's left) our forests, is adapted to handle LARGE rainfalls. That's why after 1927 and the dam was built it was designed INTENTIONALLY to hold MORE than what flooded in 1927. I physically feel ill when I see that dam being only a few feet from the edge. If that involuntary breaches even without more rainfall I can't imagine what that'd look like. But if Vermont's hit with another storm akin to this with a catastrophic breach I don't know what would even be left honestly. Again, flooding is very commonplace in Vermont, but this far far far from normal. That's why a lot of buildings have those historical markers. Also it's been almost 100 years since the dam been built. Curious to know when it's last inspection was and how it looked. I also hope they're manually breaching the damn to relieve the structure whilst also ensuring that it can take the rain to come.

I definitely think the reservoir stopped a bigger disaster

YOu would guess the actual quantity of water was higher than 1927 during this event? Vermont as had nearly 100 years to improve drainage and shedding. Tough for the folks who've lost so much! Good Luck to all.

Thank you so very much for doing these videos. I am up here in Hyde Park. And we are safe and sound and have had no issues at all because our town sits on a hill. And its crazy because if you watch Regular news, you would have no idea all this is going on. Because the news has only touched on what's happening in Vermont very lightly. They did the same thing back in 2011 before I moved back here. I was living in Maryland at the time and I was actually going to take a vacation and I had absolutely no idea that everything had been flooded and that there had even been anything going on in Vermont at all because the mainstream media didn't report a single thing that was happening in Vermont with the floods of 2011. So thank you very much for doing this and posting these because it shows me what's going on in my own State and it also shows everyone how they can help others because I have a feeling it's just going to get worse before it gets better❤ God bless you all!!

I'm not big on giving sermons over the internet....simply because no one listens or cares, or just thinks Christians are wack jobs who live in a false sense of reality, believing in nonsense. And as much as I would love to believe what you believe .... ❤️ Only God has power to give and take life. He controls the playing field. He allows things to happen or not. All for sake of waking us up. Which we have not done, and unfortunately, most never will. These are my beliefs as a child of God. We refuse to repent and come to him, so man has been set for destruction. It's the truth and that simple. Only Jesus saves. Science cannot help...only hinder. That's all its ever done. All individuals can do now, is pray, read their bible and come to understand the whole meaning of what is really behind all of this. Our souls are at stake. Our lives have very little value. It's our souls that matter, nothing else. Read Revelation. It has begun. Read the Bible, future things to come are in many of its books. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. All man will do is usher in the Beast system. And when that system takes over globally, everyone will understand the mistake they made trusting in man and science and in their own strength. And the real hell on earth will become visible to all. I truly hope and pray you find truth and wisdom in the words of our Lord God. Everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened. Matthew 7:8 May God protect you in the times to come. Prayers for the People of Vermont. Flooding is a Tragedy, it is the Most Stressful.. Because You have to Live through it, then unlike other Disasters, Fire, Tornadoes, etc.. You have to Decide to Keep or Discard everything... It is so Tragic for Everyone... Having an Incompetent Government does not Help.. I have never been to Vermont, though it seems that it would be a Nice Place....?

Would be nice if ALL politicians across the United States of America would set aside being a Republican or Democrat and give a call to States or city members ask how can they help. Even a few cases of water or can would help. I'm sorry 😢 is okay but that all. A little of something helps better than nothing at all. Forgot. It would've to be voted on which might take a few months. Think of it like CONGRASSS voting for a RAISE. OOOPS 🤔

I loved on East State Street back 1976 - 78 and parked my vehicle in the parking lot behind the city hall. Two buildings up from the corner. Went to Charlie I several times. I witnessed the bridge street bridge going out during the ice jam in March of 1964 in the village of White River Jct. Thank you for your help outing this information out.

It’s a big effort of stripping it down to the wood, drying it out and treating the wood. I saw some of it in action after Hurricane Harvey.

Like Vince told me, they were just hitting their stride after the COVID lockdowns and were finally making money. The real heartbreak was the thousands of dollars in food they had bought for this big festival coming up and all of it was ruined

I know there is a sign explaining historic floods with a post showing how high the water reached in 1927 and the other floods. It’s in downtown. But it can definitely be hard to translate sometimes when numbers like river heights are thrown out there, and into what exactly the impacts will be.

Moist air from the south colliding with all the smoke particulate from the fires in Canada helped this event along. Water vapour surrounding the particulate (like dust particles) form water droplets. Lots of particulate for this event to form. Cheers.

Fires and volcanos produce fine particles onto which water droplets condense. The particles are known as "condensation nuclei".

my grandma was looking to buy 100 acres there, north of montpelier...1986 I think. A flood took out the well kept land before they finalized. She got out of that deal, and we bought land in north central maine instead...when the flood of 87 hit, LOL. 5 years following broke records of either hot or cold, not seen again. Vermont is not alone.. I am on an island in penobscot river..expecting a very wet cycle this year. Frost heaved roads, the whole nine yards. New England be prepared. You can blame man kind.. but it is just God and the sun.

A couple years back, I bought a book on natural disasters. It cost me over $90. I bought it on Amazon. One of the most expensive books I've ever bought. It was worth it though. The book is packed with great information about various types of natural disasters. Great tables, graphs, charts, etc. Deadliest natural disasters of all-time lists. Most powerful earthquakes of all-time lists. Etc. That book pretty much goes up till about 2010, because it had the Haiti earthquake stats in it. But damn, a book like that is gonna need a major update with some of the natural disasters we've seen in this country in recent years. Plus, you had that earthquake in Turkey the other day that was one for the record books. Now you have the Maui fires in Hawaii. I bought that book to have a physical copy of record breaking natural disasters of all types, including that wild 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake tsunami. And who can forget the wild 2011 tornado outbreak season. But hell, this 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake automatically places high on the list of deadliest earthquakes of all-time, so my book doesn't have that. I really worry about those northeastern states when it comes to flooding.

Interesting. Years ago, I was living/working in Florida. Hurricane Andrew, was a huge issue during the time, I was there. I was aware, of the history of Florida's Hurricane and did, My Diaster preparedness. I had, my little First Aid Kit, flashlights, batteries, radio, rain gear, canned foods and can opener. Pool safety devices, are all over that City. Does, anyone there, have jet skis/surfboards, pool noodles, floaty devices? How, often does flood season take place, in Vermont? Has, anyone thought to move, to higher ground then, rebuilding? I guess, selling their land back to the State and relocating, right there in town to a higher level, for next time. Kinda of getting, a foreseeable jump, on Mother Nature. Preplanning and using Strategy, to outsmart the weather. Maybe, purchasing a boat, investing in a New Raft. That's got to be fun for surfers. If your drown, you drown - at least with those, rafts and floaty safety devices, you might live a little. Maybe, at the local Walmart in Hanover or one of your Co-ops. Right, next to the umbrellas. Lol🦚🦚

What’s interesting about VT is the lack of communication, or paying attention, from town leaders concerning weather events. I told family and friends that they needed to prepare for the worst after seeing NWS reports on Sunday. No one believed this could happen so not many prepared (or knew). My family/friends lost their restaurants in Mt. Holly and Londonderry in 2011, and again Monday morning. Both said the damage is worse than Irene. My heart hurts for everyone impacted. To live in a place like New England you HAVE to be weather aware, if people are warning you, listen and prepare.

@@JonathanPetramala I see your point, and phone trees are utilized frequently and hopefully were utilized in some circles. The reason I brought up town leaders is their failure in letting communities know 1 by 1 the seriousness of the storm and that restaurant owner should be upset at leadership for their lack of messaging considering the messaging of meteorologists at least 2 days prior. The lack of daily community news other than gossip means it’s up to each town to contact everyone with advisories & warnings, then each member of the community can proceed with knowledge.

Sadly one man was killed in Barre

So sad to see our friends at the Hippy Chickpea restaurant. They're great people. I worked next door at the barber shop. We had 4 feet of water in the shop. This flood was like nothing I've ever seen. Very well done video.

Incredible. Given the geography of the state, not sure how you would mitigate the risk. It’s almost as if you’d have to design any buildings in flood risk area with a sacrificial basement and first floor. There is a logical area to relocate the town, roads, infrastructure. I have never been to Vermont but from what I have seen and the patterns. Coming from the carribean island of dominica commonwealth this may get worst. It's like the first ones makes way for the next to override everything. And from what am looking at there are poor exit points for the water. And because it's like roots u can't control every point of entry so the government needs to use to methods one called gabian and the other with tires. Water is like dead moving weight. U can't see the sand withing but it's a force that comes with it. Public works needs to understand ways to allow the water in other to control it. I worked with a bridging company and one of the main things I told them was understand the water ways are older than the communities man built.

Move to higher ground get away from the flood plains and stay away time for a change give the rich farmland back for our crops I've been here since 92 so I've seen a lot here.

When NWS is calling for 8” of rain to fall on the spine of the Green Mtns (not normal), everyone in the valleys should have an idea of what’s coming, especially those who were there during Irene (which dumped 6” on the spine). High elevation areas were already flooded and inaccessible by Monday morning.

that flood in the early 1900's sounds like what we would call a "Glacial outflow lake" bursting and releasing contained water suddenly.

Good coverage on this catastrophic situation. My takeaway is drop what your doing, and review your property insurance asap! That last interview says that man has nothing to fall back on.

the flood of '87 in Maine was very similar to this and considered a federal disaster.... they will be surprised how quickly things will rebound.,.what isn't covered by insurance will be covered by low interest loans from the goverment... vouchers, red cross help.. fema help for the municipalities... a year from now it will only be a memory

Sad situation. Praying for your restoration. Not just for your homes or businesses but restoration of your hearts and that you will seek God's will for your life as you rebuild. Many will blame God for this but his divine plans always have a purpose 🙏

I lived out on Three mile bridge road just outside of Montpelier back in the early 80s glad I left in 1987!

I can only imagine how much people are suffering and how much people are going through.

Historically, almost everywhere in north america, hamlets where located next to a river, the transportation road of the time. So when water rises and left river bed you have the result that we see here. Pretty sure that Barre in top of mountain is bone dry. Barre was put there on top cause marble quarries were there.

Down by the river were the worst problems of course

So sorry to see the damage from this flood. After seeing the Library, they might want to move all of their utilities up one floor instead of in the basement.

It would be great but I am doubtful they receive the money to make a change like that. Fingers crossed.

My husband and I were in Wilmington, VT in 2011 after Irene hit, so tragic. And such mess and so much loss.

My family (stepson, daughter in law and 2 grandchildren) live in Montpelier VT Thank Goodness their house is on a hill. Prayers go out to the people of Montpelier 🙏🙏🙏

Oh Vermont...my favourite state. I have a friend in Vermont and I was saddend to see Gov Scott and Senator Scott t the news conferences. I am in Kingston Ontario and had planned to pop to Montepelier next week. This does not seem sound right now...like Vermonters...straightforward... 4:44

Thank goodness those books in the library didn't get damaged. That would have been a total loss. I have a large collection of books myself. I currently rent the 2nd floor of a house in Indiana. The house is quite elevated from the main street. It takes 7 steps up off the main street just to get to the first floor. Then to get to my second floor, it takes another 18 steps up. I'm used to living in houses and apartments that only take 14 steps up to the next level, so 18 steps is quite a lot. The last apartment I rented, I was on the 3rd floor. From 2004 to 2017, I lived in a first floor apartment, but we were up on a decent sized hill. I always want to be elevated just in case of flooding.

What I thought was interesting they can’t move the priceless books higher because they don’t have good enough climate control to keep temperatures and humidity down

If you live in Vermont you should be prepared I've lived here for forty years I keep my pantry stocked emergency items in abundance

1927 was worst. Not in summer heat but cold late fall with 1927 technos.

I'm sorry but the guy at 13:18 didn't take heed of the warning. Warnings mean eminent. He said he didn't take it seriously. Oh well it's on you bud. When you build near streams, rivers or the ocean the water will get to you eventually. Sorry if I sound callous but how many times are people going to rebuild only to have it happen again ?

These poor people. How and where do then begin! What happens with all these items that are no longer able to be back in homes and buildings? Such a horrible situation!

The list guy you interviewed, I really don't understand, how he didn't understand what living by a river and in a flood zone means, I live by the ocean and we know what can happen just by tides

I agree. As bad as I feel for the guy there is a history of flooding, even if he wasn't there for it. There are literally historical flood level markers throughout the city. How could you not have insurance for flooding on your business??? Still I hope the town will rally and help him through this crisis.

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine or as he said, translate the river level. But two blocks away there’s a display and sign showing historic flood levels so it’s like I always try to encourage people, prepare for the worst

The floods are indeed awful and destructive but to call it a once in a thousand year flood is misleading. How do they know that ? How would they know if there was a similar flood even 400 years ago ?

Just a statistical probability way of phrasing it. Technically you have the same probability every year but stats show it likely only happening every 100-1000 years

A geological survey can be done to the soils. Each flood will deposit silt/ sediments, leaving a small layer each time. There are several ways to determine dates, including carbon dating - which can help determine dates from hundreds, even thousands of years ago. Hope this helps answer your question. My heart breaks for this community. I hope they can recover & rebuild fast. We went through record flooding in 2011 with TS Lee. I'm in Northeast Pennsylvania & my town was devastated when our Susquehanna River broke an all time record, so I feel for this community. Stay strong!

seeing all those cars, people really didn't believe this could happen and it is going to be so hard for a while.

@@mariammartinez5151 There are parts of the world, like I think Fiji, where houses sit on stilt. Their "basement" is the ocean. Ancient wisdom about dealing with water.

As someone who loves Vermont as ab outdoorsman paradise it’s heartbreaking to see the rivers and all the Smallmouth bass that are probably dead. The people will recover rather quickly but the wildlife will not 😢
