By military tradition, military working dogs (MWDs) are considered noncommissioned officers (NCOs). Because of this, the dogs tend to outrank or match their handlers in rank. In theory, this prevents abuse of the dogs. In reality, MWD handlers have a deep bond with their dogs and wouldn't dream of hurting them whether they outranked them or not.

They are humanity's familiars, our constant companion. It is theorized that it is possible that dogs mutually evolved with humans, rather than simply a result of human breeding them - co-evolution. They were the only ones who could keep up with human's method of endurance hunting. They can respond to our gestures, they can take cues from our line of sight, and they can read our emotions. Dogs are special to us, and we are special to them.

Many livestock animals have some level of emotional intelligence. Such is the nature of any animal that's survived evolutionarily until now. You have to remember these dogs fight side by side with their soldier comrades. They find IED's (often at the expense of their own life) and save hundreds of soldiers as a result. They are the only continual company they have whilst being deployed so the bond is very strong. It's right to honour them with full military decorations when they pass away, after all they are fully ranking military personnel albeit of the canine variety.

My dad trained and handled dogs in Vietnam in the early 70s. When he walked point and searched with the dogs he said he always had the same dog, even though he trained many. Her name was Ossa and she was a 4 year old German Shepherd. He was with her for over 3 years almost night and day. He doesn't ever speak much of being in Vietnam, but when he does it is ALWAYS about Ossa and how she is the only reason he could have made it while in the war. We always had lovely, well trained German Shepherds growing up. I am 45 and have had one dog and one cat on my own who died of old age. Now have a Newfoundland dog, Ragdoll cat and an Appaloosa show horse for my oldest. My girls are 21 and 18, love, respect and appreciate animals. Plus not everyone has the time or money to look after dogs. In my family we all were busy so one one would be able to walk the dog multiple times a day. As and NCO, a military dog is entitled to a military funeral. Including a flag-draped coffin, honor guard, and burial in a National Cemetery. However, this was not always so. A local dog trainer here who served in Vietnam as a dog handler in the army told me he volunteered for a SECOND tour in Vietnam to save his dog from being euthanized after he left. Back then (1969), dogs were not considered soldiers and the belief was that after serving in the stress of a frontline unit they would never be able to adapt to civilian life. So they were NEVER given to their handlers to keep and they had to be put down. So sad. So glad it's changed.

Indo-Europeans generally have a thing with pets, especially dogs. You said, "it is as if the dog and the man are the same entity". That is really accurate. They are definitely a part of our society in a way that is almost the same as how other people are. This has been going on a long long time. People would even bury themselves with their dogs. The first human and canine grave is from 14,000 years ago. The attitude is summed up in the poem "The Rainbow Bridge". Dogs are accorded a kind of secondary humanity. They are people. But the kind of people that are dogs.

You can be aware of such a huge cultural difference but never really feel it until you hear someone be so amazed at what we see as respectable. We have had our little dog for 14 years. Knowing he is old and can go at any time we started to plan for his passing. At no point until just now did I ever think that planning for my doggies passing was unusual. A cremation and special urn to always keep his memory near seemed so right and normal. I believe it is right and dread that day but I can truly feel the stark difference and privilege we have now.

@@skepticalthesensible I do live in a city (well, suburbia, but it's more rural than urban), but I don't think that's where the difference lies. My family has had five dogs throughout my life, and fortunately we've never had to make such a decision; One ran away, two died suddenly from unexpected medical conditions, one got sick and by the time we figured out what was wrong with her it was past the point of fixing so we put her down, and the other got too old to walk so we had to put him down too (this was not a small dog-- this was a very large German shepherd). But for a dog, whose life expectancy generally caps out around 15 years, I wouldn't be able to justify spending that kind of money-- I'm not sure I'd be willing to justify spending that kind of money on myself, depending on how old I was and the seriousness of the problem. I agree with other commenters-- if you're going to bankrupt yourself to where you might not even be able to care for the animal-- let alone the other humans in your family-- then what's the point?
