In ancient times, when literati or the upper class drank tea, they usually put one hand in front of them to block the movement of drinking tea. The cuffs of traditional Chinese clothing are very long and can be hung down just enough to cover it. Blocking is purely a behavior of people pursuing elegance in ancient times.

We don't do that in chengdu. It's 盖碗茶，pretty much a redneck Style of tea. Don't need 2 hands. Just chill and enjoy it.

In Chinese culture, you don't need to ask stranger's name to show your respect. Chinese don't ask stranger's name, instead, Chinese will call stranger using salutation depending on their age (younger or senior than you) and gender, e.g. little sister, big bro, etc.

It's the same in all of Asia. If someone like your parents age call uncle aunt, if someone is like your grandparents' age called them grandparents. And if you think some are older than you or younger then you then called them elder sister/ brother or younger brother / sister. Simple. It's a cultural difference between west & Asia.

Yes, in Asian culture (not just Chinese) usually addressing others by their names especially ones who are more senior or older than you is considered disrespectful. To show respect, people tend only to ask for one's surname. Address others as Mr X or terms like uncle X, auntie X, grandpa X , grandma X etc. Only address others by their names if they are your peers and when you are on more familiar friendly terms with them.

Although China still has backward and poor areas, it is definitely not as bad as the Western media says. To understand something, you have to do it yourself. The tea you are drinking is a very popular gaiwan tea in Sichuan. When drinking, you need to use the lid to cover the tea cup and leave a small gap. This way, the tea leaves can be filtered through this method, and it can also prevent scalding.

fun vlog! after watching a few others, I'll have to say yours are a lot more fun! some people just show points A and point B but you show the sometimes chaotic steps in between which makes for a much more immersive experience. the big colorful statues looking things in the park should be leftover lanterns from chinese new year. maybe a night they might still be lighting them up. everything goes at chinese parks. people like to show up to exercise, socialize, or even show off whatever skills they have without inhibitions. it's a great way for the older folks to get out and about instead of sitting at home all day.

The two bad things about visiting China will be the Alipay or WeChat pay only and crowd on specific time. But I think go there on vacation will be great due to they don’t have the same calendar as us.

The people performing in the park are retired elderly people. They will join various clubs for socializing and exercising. Retirement life in China is very interesting

If you like park, you can take line 1 to Tianfu Park which is the largest park in Chengdu. it's very chilly and laid back, so many greenery.

I had a few chats with Chinese elders who lived in Chongqing about your observation about the laid back vibe in Chengdu. There was a major earthquake in Chengdu in 2008. Apparently after the people rebuilt their lives there, the people changed somewhat to live a bit more in the moment than the rest of the country. Also, Mixue sounds like “me sure”. Means “honey snow”

Yes, but just a reminder, the places you mentioned are all in the High-tech District, and Tianfu New District is further south.

Miss my hometown. Much more modern than I remember, but still the same vibe! Snacks at touristy places are usually not as good as originals - restaurants could be a better option; to find the best places you’ll need local advice.
