    I hope this wasn't too chatty. I really didn't feel that I had to justify what I was keeping to you, I just wanted to tell you exactly what runs through my head as I declutter my personal spaces. And I will report back on how all the dying of clothes goes.

    Love hearing your reasoning and what I love most is your recognition of "ruthless decluttering." I can't begin to tell you how many times I've gotten rid of things and then regretted it later. And yes, knowing you'll probably use something in the future and decide to keep it [e.g. the yellow vest] is practical and economical. Good decisions all around!

    Love hearing your thought processes… it is really helpful while we are all trying to figure out this “ disease” we share.. Reminding us to be kind to ourselves also and to balance that with the ruthlessness. Thank you for sharing. ❤

    April....talking through the decision process is exactly what motivates me to declutter. Videos that do not cover the reasons for items being decluttered hold no value for me. Thank you for talking through the "why it's not working" aspect of your decluttering.

    April, it did not feel like you were trying to justify anything. This declutter is probably the most relatable declutter I've ever seen just because you've got everything: your favorite denim stash, impulse buys, free declutter gifts that you thought you wanted but don't 😂, clothes that are wearing out but there's still some life in them, forgetting who you were when you bought something, wanting a better version but keeping the current for now, clothes that you love and want to try to extend the life of, keeping function things because...they're functional, having different accessories for different purposes, thinking about ways you can repurpose things so you can get use out of them... it's all 100% relatable, not to mention wise. It makes me feel better to know that as much as I try to make good "bringing into my home" decisions, I'm still only human and others experience the same regrets. lol ❤ I love that you talk about intentional decluttering. I consider myself a minimalist, but I try to really think through what I let go. There's a difference between "just in case" and "just for when." And honestly, it's okay to keep "just in case" items too (I have a few!) - within reason. And I also have the few "I don't have a use for now but will probably in the future" items. 🙂 Maybe you can use your mom's sentimental bag when you go traveling or if you're afraid of losing it, maybe you can use it to store off season clothes or linens, or any occasional use items. They sell inexpensive gadgets that de-pill and de-nub your clothes. Mine broke and I need to get another one so bad! Look up "clothes/sweater de-nubber or de-piller" - they work on fabric surfaces - including bedding! I always enjoy your videos (I've been following along your channel since right after you started it 😄❤. I understand you had a previous channel but I have no idea what it was about 😂). P.S. I'm sorry you're struggling with back pain, I know it all too well. Your closet looks great! 😄

    Thank you so much for this message. I read through it twice! And you know, I've been testing all of these ways of decluttering out for almost 18 years (though I didn't realize it at the time back then) AND I still am not perfect and have regrets, but you live and learn, right? I love that idea for the bag. When I grabbed it from my mom she made me swear that I wouldn't declutter it EVER. I would love to just display it in my closet one day as a sort of, decor piece... and stuffed with offseason is a great idea. I've got to get one of those tools. I'm hoping I can revive my sweaters! Thank you so much for your sincere comment and following along. I'm so happy that you guys loved this video, because I know that you will love the book too! Hope you had a great weekend!

    Before dying keep in mind that threads don’t take color! So be prepared to most likely have a contrast stitch. I dye a lot of different textiles, but stitch thread is almost always synthetic, therefore won’t take dye. I heard there’s dye for synthetics, but I’m not sure if it will work or not.

    Great declutter! What I’ve started doing is when I try on something and I don’t like it I immediately put in donate pile. I do the same thing with an item I’ve worn that I realize I just don’t like. I come home and straight to donate pile. Works with makeup and skincare, immediate decision, and no pressure to finish something that doesn’t work for me.

    I was shocked too! I hadn't expected much from this one, thinking that you keep things pared down routinely...in a tiny space. What could you possibly cull? What a surprise to not only see you make clear, sensitive choices about what to let go or not but the size of that pile in the end. I had no idea. Hearing you think through was helpful to me, as you allowed for a gray area rather than strict black-and-white, sometimes wasteful thinking ("ruthless"). And you had room for those keeps -- critical point. In fact, I was inspired to tackle a haphazard pile in my bedroom immediately afterward; not with culling in mind but simply to pick up, put away, and clean up the space. Tossed some leggings beyond repair. Great job, thanks, April!

    Tip about dyeing: if its not natural fiber, you need special dye which can be very tricky (i.e. the sportsset) and all seams will stay the color they are, since theyre also not natural. So maybe you end up with brownish-black Joggingpants with orange seams 😅🙊

  • @JoannaSelvan
    @JoannaSelvan5 ай бұрын

    As for dying clothes, there are 2 types of dye- one is for natural fabric and one for synthetics. If you dye light colour t-shirt, like the everlane one you mentioned, with black dye, stitching won’t dye (it is made from polyester), so hem threads will be contrasting. If you don’t want that effect you will need to use synthetic fabric dye. What is the difference? Regular dye process is a bit easier. As for darks it is very easy to refresh them with fabric dye and it makes a big difference. When using black dye you may want to invest in dye fixative to use after dying process otherwise it is very likely that your re-dyed item will bleed dye when washed or when you sweat and properly setting the dye makes a big difference.

Items that you put directly on your body. Also, clothes are a reflection of your taste and personality. At the end of my declutter, I ended up with whites, greys and blacks (obviously). What's crazy is that it's the same size but the layout is different... I can't tell you how much of a difference the layout makes. Jackson and I both have said so many times that it feels soooo much bigger. We love it and Izzy loves all the catTV she gets to do.@@shannonstroud2479

    Please mind, that seethrough materials are mostly seethrough after dying them, because the material is often too thin. As it is stretched, the people behind you maybe can see your undergarments while riding. 😅 But like the idea of trying to use items, or upcycle them. 😊

    I have a very interesting way to declutter clothes: I usually feel like I have to buy some sort of clothing item, when I have some unresolved issue in my wardrobe. Last time I felt the need to buy a lot of underwears. Turned out I had about 10% I would wear and the rest was just stuff I kept so I have enough. I am slowly changing out my whole wardrobe, so I have stuff I would wear anytime rather than stuff I have because I might need them.

    Thank you for showing your process. I've just found your channel. Can I say something that doesn't get said on other declutter and organizing videos?... People come in all sizes and for us plus size ladies, it's hard to use the little narrow ikea 4 inch deep drawers for clothing or the really small shelf bins. While I understand dropping down the amount of clothes that many of us have, the organizing products on some of them just won't work. It makes us rethink how on earth to do it.

    You just said everything that I say in my head (or even muttering to myself) when I’m going through stuff, sometimes I have to talk myself through it or justify why I need to let it go if I feel guilt over it. I also always make a maybe pile of stuff to challenge myself to wear in the next week/month and then see how I feel about it after.

    As far as being chatty, I don't mind because even I catch myself doing it. It helps me clear my thought process and make better decisions that way. So don't feel bad about it. It even help us think as to why we should keep something, get rid of something or keep it for a bit longer if we are not sure. When you go through the deccluttering process out loud it helps us go through our stuff and reason it the same way. So don't feel bad about it.

    Take those slacks to the tailor or your mom if she knows how to tailor. You can let out the back darts and either eliminate the waistband or add a little piece to it. If you wear a belt it will cover the added piece. I usually add the piece to the front and it works out perfectly.
