Shnootz - Reaction Video (ABBA - Our Last Summer)
What's happening, folks! I'm back with another ABBA reaction from their 1980 album Super Trouper, and this time we listen to "Our Last Summer," a phrase that got me thinking in advance, though as you'll see, my understanding of the themes at play continued to evolve once I started listening. So join me for another tasty treat from this top-shelf ABBA album. Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

No disregard to Agnetha but doesn't Frida have the most beautiful female singing voice we've ever heard? ❤

YES! 😍 (And yes, Agnetha's voice is great, too but for me Frida's voice has something unique 🥰)
'and now you're working in a bank,a family man a football fan,and your name is Harry.......how dull it seems....yet you're the Hero of my dreams"... amazing.
The warmth and emotion in Frida's voice is so beautiful ❤. Another fantastic Abba song that wasn't a single ❤
I love this song its wistful, breezy, melancholic, and quite beautiful. Its also hopefull and accepting. One of Frida's shining moments in Abba catelouge
There's an existential quality here--as if to say, we're seizing this moment because we know it won't last, and because this may be our last chance to truly experience youth before middle age and fear of death sets in. It is sentimental, but with a barb. Frida's voice is just incredibly stirring.
Just wanna say. Frida - what a voice!
Love this song. Full of nostalgia. Frida´s vocals are awesome here.
Another great lead vocal from Frida and great guitar solo too. I luv the harmonies with this as Agnetha holds the note in the background and Frida’s does the same towards the end of the song.
Every title on "super trouper" was jewel
I love this song! It has everything: a great melody, fantastic lyrics, sublime leadvocal from Frida, flawless chorus, and a memorable guitarsolo Whats not to like!? ❤️!

I agree, is this the only song with ABBA that has that kind of guitarsolo? It surprised me, I had heard the song before but kind of glanced over it, but today it made a great impression on me, maybe because I've been listening more to rock music for a while, that I appreciated the art more. Agree on everything you said there!
Sadly, ABBA's guitarist, Lasse Wellander, recently passed away (4/7/23)
"You can't fade while she's doing that!" 😂😂 You tell 'em, Matt! Another awesome vocal by Frida, just wait till you hear what she gets up to on "The Visitors" album 🤩
Wonderful lead vocals by Frida, wonderful harmonies with Agnetha. One of ABBA's outstanding album tracks. Thanks for making me re-visit this song.
Again, Frida takes more and more of the space when we come nearer the end of the ABBA journey. Great stuff!

Yes, Super Trouper has 4 songs with Frida on lead and only 3 by Agnetha. And on The Visitors Frida is having the lead on the 4 most memorable and mezmerising songs on the album! ❤️

@@flemmingkristoffersen1896 And don't forget the Frida led bonus tracks on both albums. Put On Your White Sombrero, Should I Laugh Or Cry and Cassandra. I hope that he reacts to them, too.😃

Yes, I agree, and not just with regard to the actual number of songs she leads on. This is I think the first song where Frida really blossoms as a powerful singer. That journey is to be continued on the Visitors which has some of her best vocals ever. In fact, I believe she continued that journey (with a few ups and downs) in her later solo career, which I find is way more interesting than Agnetha's. Frida's solo work might be worth a deep dive as well, Matt, after you've finished with Abba. Plenty to enjoy there as well. As for the song theme: it hasn't been picked up but the song really deals with the contrast of one's early life, full of ideals, politics, sunshine and dreams, and one's later reality of life, where everything is more sedate, but it still may be very precious. After all, contrary to some comments, she DOES stay with her Paris lover, and loves him just as much even though he has turned into something more of a couch potatoe. 🙂
The romantic wistfulness of this track was totally lost on my 13 year old self - tracks like these hammered home that Abba were around the same age as my parents. It's clearly set in late sixties Paris - it mentions flower power and talk of philosophy. So, a student romance, probably first love, fond memories of a wonderful time, but life took them on different journeys though clearly they have kept in touch. Beautiful, warm tune, very different memories to "Winner" - I think it suits Frida's voice more than Agnetha's. Lots of the classical/baroque trills that are all over this album, the guitar to give it a bit of edge and texture. Great stuff. And obviously now I have a whole load of "our last summers" to relate the song to :)
This is the Abba I love. Your Mamma Mia's et al are great but THIS! I read that this was Agnetha's favourite Frida vocal. She would like to have led but, hey, she got The Winner Takes It All so no complaints, I'm sure.
Great song. Frida❤ amazing 👌 Good react Matt... Nice stretch, Lucca😅 See ya, ❤️🇨🇱👍
Hello, Matt so good to begin a new week with another ABBA song "Our last summer" (1980) has a nice melody and a beautiful interpretation by Frida, with Agnetha supporting it in the backing vocals. and a great instrumental moment The lyrics are a reflexion of Björn about a trip in your youngest days It's a very good song, (7/8pts) but not in my Top 5 of the "Super Truper" album and curiosity I believe is one of the favourites of Agnetha in the album See you in the next My best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South America
One of my favorites!!
Walks along the Seine, laughing in the rain, Our last summer, memories that remain... Great rhyming: Seine, Rain, Remain 😊
This song was recently featured in some scenes of Marvel’s Thor - Love and Thunder movie, during a love scene montage.
In the bridge(where you hear the guitar solo) there is part of the Anthem tune from Chess in the background. They had the Chess tune since '75 but felt it wasn't right for a pop album. Parts would be find it's way into the bridge of Our last Summer and finally fully realised in their post Abba Chess musical.
It was partly a memory of Bjorn from when he was young and visited paris. This one has nothing to do with their relation at the moment. Another great song on the album!. Great visual lyrics

Cheers, I picked up on that as the song went along, though I appreciate the specifics on Bjorn's writing here.
Great song with some showcase vocals from Frida. Nice composition from Benny and Bjorn, exemplary per usual. I’m looking forward to the next 3 9:13 songs that end the album. 3 totally different styles but 3 of my favorite ABBA tunes of all time. Thanks Matt 👍
Frida was sometimes jealous when Agnetha was given the lead on the commercial songs. But when you go through the whole catalogue you see that Frida did sing lead on so many gems. This song is one of those gems, I just love it. That little guitar solo is fantastic.

Anni-Frid have 4 songs on lead vocals on this album and Agnetha 3, I really love her vocal performance on all their albums from Arrival to Voyage. I read in Agnetha's book that they really pushed and encourage each other to improve vocally, it was not a competition between them.

@@rodney9409 Yes, and of the 4 songs by Frida, only one became a single (Super Trouper), whereas all three Agnetha songs (The Winner Takes It All, Happy New Year, Lay All Your Love On Me) became singles. I've seen an interview with Frida where she said that she and Agnetha often wanted the same songs, and she was sometimes a bit irritated when Agnetha 'won'.

@@Pulsar77 Yes, I saw an interview where she said she was sometimes envious of the soungs with Agnetha on lead. It is interesting that Chiquitita was originally called In The Arms Of Rosalita with Frida on lead, it shows their dedication and intuition to change the song and Agnetha on lead, with harmonies on that song that's so good.

You summed up my thoughts perfectly. Totally agree 💯%
Very appropriate t-shirt. Those crazy years. It was the time of the flower power.
A case here where Benny would constantly borrow from himself. In the instrumental section, an almost inaudible melody line that was originally recorded in 1975 but never used or released, he would later steal it again in 1984 for ‘Anthem’ from their musical CHESS
One of my favourite ABBA songs 🥰🥰🥰 The next one is again completely different and unique in their catalogue.
There is a secret under the guitar bridge ! If you listen carefully with headphones you can here the vocal theme of Chess ( The Musical)
Keyboard riffs characteristic for this album in 2. verse is excellent.
Youll hear "Anthem" from Chess (1984) during the guitar solo if you listen closely This., and The winner takes it all are my favourites of the LP /Harry
I can't wait for the next track, The Piper....The Pied Piper of Hamelin 😜

... and its modern implications of 'fake news' and 'follow the leader', on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of My Favorites. Brings tears. Please try reacting to Abba's new song I can be that Woman. Agnetha's lead vocals are raw and believable. 74 years old and her voice is still Angelic.
Bjorn wrote this about her girlfriend when he was young, possibly when he was a teen before he met Agnetha. The acoustic solo in the first Mamma Mia was also a good cover.
The next track is a change in tone. Drawing on the European legend of the Pied Piper, but here the Piper appears to be dangerous charismatic (political?) leader. 'So they let him play, play their minds away'. Sounds medieval in places, with some Latin thrown in. Standard pop music fare.😉
I was in Paris at Easter 1976 then again in April 1983. When I want to 'revisit' it again, I listen to this song. Fantastic.
