+vick3d - Norway is on the *continent* of EUROPE; which makes Norwegians "Europeans" by default. The "European Union" is a coalition that European countries (not all) have joined into. The EU is not a country. Let me find out that you don't know that there's a North _AND_ South America, too...

vick3d I'm pretty sure Norway is considered culturally to be part of the European mix of countries. Otherwise Danes would be European yet swedes in Norwegians and Finnish wouldn't be European because Danes and Swedes and Norwegians and Finnish are all ethically and culturally related. And the bigger umbrella over all of them after Scandinavian is European. That's my understanding of it at least so I could be wrong. But no, politically, Norway is not part of the European Union.

Which is sad because they are not that good actually. It's expected that the media criticize politicians. You have no idea how horrible the US looks from an outside perspective. Anyone focusing on the word shithole is putting up a straw man. This situation is NOT that the president said a swear word; the media, particularly the right wing, is framing the argument that way to deflect from the main issue... The main issue is the bigotry of not allowing someone to immigrate here solely because their country is poor. Right wingers went from claiming that Trump had nothing against legal immigration as long as the immigrant pulls their weight, but now "suprisingly" Trump is even entertaining the idea of banning entire countries of people - not because they're a terroristic threat, not because theyre background check pulls up something shady - no, if they're poor then we don't want them, says Donald Trump. This is not about the word shithole; this is about passing judgement on an entire group of people, even if they're coming here to make a better life for themselves via hard work and education.

Know Thanks Okay. I see your point. But we got a lot of misinformation here. We already have a rigorous immigration system already in place. Also IQ isn't really a dependable tool for determining quality of character or worth. Also your idea of our immigration issue is deluded. We don't have an unsustainable flood of immigrants. The ones that come here work hard; they get educated, open businesses, etc. They do many jobs most Americans just won't do. They are a huge benefit to the US.

Know Thanks Also the drug war isn't an over the border issue. The amount of drugs required for our country's drug use is astronomical. People always do drugs. The border being patrolled will barely help anything. Drugs don't just come from Mexico. And I agree that US troops need to be removed from Israel. But not to be stupidly allocated to the border. If anything I propose multiple buildings that can expedite non-felon immigrants to becoming documented.

Norway without oil would not be what it is today More generally, without the industrial revolution, Scandinavia would be a quite shithole because of its climate. The last mass famine in Europe outside of Russia was in Finland and Sweden in the 1860s, and that did trigger a mass migration to North America. Norway has always been a bit more insulated from such things because it relies much more on the sea, but still.

  • @KOSKentOlaf

Mazxj Stripes you are making the assumption that all the people are uneducated and unskilled from these countries. A lot are but it ‘s a percent and this answer should relate to the point here. I had a client myself that is from a war torn country. He is a doctor and his wife has qualified as a dentist. I’m from Ireland not the US. But at the same time a lot of my Irish side of my family don’t work like these people. In fact we have a few drinks now and then. Also I’ve been to Norway a few times and it’s very nice and all but not everyone there is a doctor and they don’t work like That as well. They get a lot of time off. So if you judge a lot of people in a group because of where they are from or the colour of there skin what are you doing. So in short I don’t think trump is like the Kkk but he needs to think before he talks.

It's his own fucking fault. There's evidence that recently came out that he paid off a porn star to cover-up a sexual encounter, and the entire state of Hawaii is still reeling from a nuclear scare. There's plenty of news going on. The reason this story has been getting so much traction is because, yes, it matters - in spite of what you might think. This man is trying to form policy based on his racist, ignorant views. That matters. It matters to the millions of people who will be impacted by his decisions.

Since stuff like this has actively alienated allies of the US as well as endangered us troops working in some of those "African nations" right now, as well as making countries not trust the US or want to give them intelligence, support and aid...i think it's on point. Again when he says stuff like this o his many other stupid decisions and actions, more and more counties stop looking to the US as the leader, they refuse to participate with them, they hold back on intelligence o alert reports they can't trust the US or they cut the US out and work around them... it damages the US influence and presence and it allows places like Russia and china to move in and take up the slack. They are giving the Africans tons of money and investing in everything from business to infrastructure etc. China is also creating it's own TPP trade agreement with the Asian nations and it cuts the US out of the deal. etc. etc. the idiot in chief is weakening his country and his countries influence world wide.

funny enough education, healthcare and most social programs in the US are either ten times as expensive or effectively worse than what they are in Norway... the Norwegians and Europeans who come to the states like the fact they have more mobility with their economic status because they don't have to give so much money to taxes, at the same time they pay double/triple the price anyway becasue America's systems are either garnered for maximum privatization and profit or their social programs suck and are less developed and efficient as the Norwegian ones. Luckily the Europeans are usually ten times more educated and intelligent than the average American so they find good jobs that can handle these increased prices. In Norway a trip to the hospital is free and covered by their taxes, while n America it's a possible four to six figure price tag. I know several people from Britain who no longeR go to the doctors at all becasue it would bankrupt them in America, meanwhile they'd have more coverage and write off back home in the UK. "Raw numbers are kind of irrelevant. I'm sure a greater (orders of magnitude greater) percentage of Norwegians move to the U.S. than vice versa." This is one of the few times I'm going to disagree with you. Countries like Haiti, Syria, Ghana, etc are shitholes compared to Western liberal democratic countries like Norway and Canada. There's really no argument against that unless you think no indoor plumbing and dedicated shitting streets are good things. Whether or not this quote is coming from place of prejudice is irrelevant to the truth of the observation. I doubt Trump is even smart enough to be racist. We are under no obligation to take in immigrants or refugees. It's our country, they have zero right to demand that we have to suffer their entrance into our country. If we did accept immigrants, which we ought to stop immigration one hundred percent, it should totally be based on merit. The immigrants should add to our pool of knowledge and skill, not dilute it.

  • @24mrdanny

    @24mrdanny

I agree on the merit thing. Didn't really get Kyle's point there. But I think you've missed the point on the "shithole" comment. Just to make sure we're on the same page, Trump was supposedly talking about African countries and Haiti when he said _“why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”_ and then he went on to say the US should get more people from places like Norway instead. Those countries are obviously terrible places and extremely poor. No denying that. The problem is that Trump is implying that the *people* are terrible as well, and that's why we should let less in. As you said yourself we should be deciding on merit. Where you came from shouldn't be relevant at all. But Trump is saying that 'no, actually just coming from a "shithole" country means we shouldn't let you in'. Racist is maybe a bit too far since race wasn't mentioned... But I think this shows he is 100% bigoted against those countries.

I agree @CultofHam Although I don't agree on the use of the profane vulgar language, there must be some truth to countries being $#!+holes. Many people sneak into OUR country and over stay their VISA's and are here 20-30 plus years illegally because THEY DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES. They want to be a part of our country. But you have to obey the law. We can't condone lawlessness. If Americans don't pay our taxes, we go to jail. But if you come to the country illegally, we are supposed to look the other way? That inconsistency is crazy!

IMO the problem is not that he thinks those countries are in a bad place or as he puts it "shitholes", the problem is a) The notion that you shouldn't accept people into your country because they have rough circumstances (I think you could even make a case for giving more people from these places opportunities, but that is a seperate conversation) b) Adding that we should take up more people from "countries like Norway" does make it seem like there is a racial aspect to it But even if we put all of this aside, it's absolutely pathethic that one of the most powerful men of the world is making policies while sounding like a fucking 5 year old.

IMO, a country should only take in an immigrant if they're going to be a net payer of taxes (or they're in immediate danger). I'd obviously rather take a Haitian engineer over a Norwegian dropout but It's just more likely that you'll find a skilled worker in Norway (100% literacy rate) vs Haiti (61% literacy rate). America should be spending it's money on it's own poverty stricken citizens before helping other countries. (tbh America has enough money to help everyone and still help other countries but for some reason America insists on spending trillions on the military industrial complex... )

Honest question, please answer honestly. Pick one alternative: A. Random immigrant from Egypt where more than 80 percent of the population believes adulterers should be stoned to death and likewise with apostates from islam or gays. B. Random immigrant from Norway where pretty much 0 percent (the fact that the number is larger than 0? See alternative A again) believe any such thing, and instead a large majority supports universal healthcare, equal rights for men, women, gays et al. Personally, I would pick alternative B every single damn time. What about you Kyle? I thought you loved Norway. Cheers.

I am Norwegian and I am a liberal socialists and I agree with you 100 percent. Infact, the right (as in the rich capital class such as our Zuckerbergs and Bezo's ) support mass immigration every single one of them. Why? It will of course destroy the welfare state. The welfare state has largely collapsed in Sweden. In Norway it stays afloat from a combination of less crazy politician as well as oil revenue. But, say a random Somalian (shithole right?) immigrant with chain immigration and people like that. I am an economist too. And the numbers show that our sovereign wealth fund, one of the largest in the world, will be entirely spent in just a few decades taking care of Somalians and other assorted riff raff. And, that is just welfare payments. Then you can look at crime stats. The official Norwegian government stat agency finally released the stats of the most criminal immigrant groups just before Christmas. Here are the top 6: 1. Kosovo (albania - muslim shithole. A bit different to the rest on the list because they are quite organized mafia style) 2. Somalia (no comments) 3. Iraq 4. Iran 5. Afghanistan 6 Morocco Countless rape and assault victims here. These are costs that you cannot put in a budget, and the people responsible for them.... Well, karma can hopefully be the bitch she usually is. I am a liberal socialist - probably a bit like Kyle - though I think the cornerstone of our development is the enlightenment and truth. We lose track of the truth we are straight into 1984, which I am incidently rereading atm. Those 2 minutes of hate sessions seems like CNN talk about Trump between commercial break. Even Orwell, didn't think the world could get that corrupted. 2 minutes of hate, and buy Budwiser the preferred brand among looters in Haiti. Cheers.

Btw, the old slogan that built the welfare states were this: Do your share, do your work, then claim your right. The entire system is built on strong work ethics and that you put more into it than you take out. But, the "right" will win. Europe AND America will be filled with cheap third world labour. Middle classes will be destroyed on both continents and the people ruling you will only get richer. More debt slaves to herd around, more drones shopping toilet paper at Walmart etc etc. Who pays for it? YOU, the last remaining part of the dwindling middle class.

They found 51% to 63% were ‘half-baked’, ‘unfit for jobs’, ‘lacking job market skills’. Same story across Africa.

Legal immigrants have a good education because they have been vetted, it doesnt mean everybody in that country is highly educated. The majority are not. Most western countries accept skilled/educated migrants through immigration programs. Then there is a different standard for refugees. Thats why a lot of people(illegal immigrants) claim to be refugees these days, because they know the standards are much lower. Refugees and illegal immigrants is a whole different story.

I've seen some people try to defend Trump's comments by saying that if people want to come to the US then that must mean that they're fleeing those countries, ergo those countries must be the type you'd want to flee from. So it's not about the people, it's the country. But surely the logic of his remark is that those people are going to bring the problems of that country into the US. So it is about the people. They can't transcend where they came from, so they should stay where they are.

For a second there, I thought Kyle was going to go against what Philip DeFranco said when he covered this. Yesterday, I was on the train and saw a lady wearing a Norwegian hat. I almost asked her about Trump's comment, but all I could think about is that she came from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow.

In my opinion as an Salvadoran and natural behavior born American, I’m not surprised Trump would say such thing. The guy literally took the protection on the 200,000 of my Salvadorans who only came here to escape from devastation from a terrible earthquake and the cartel. How I feel from his remark, honestly indifferent. The guy is literally spat nonsense everyday and made terrible decisions I’m fed up to the point I don’t care anymore.

It is such a Trump thing to do to spend 30 minutes from someone from another country and immediately want more people from that country to immigrate here. Like he thinks everyone from that country must exactly like that person.

If you see people trying to defend 'shithole countries' statement while trying to argue if you want to live there if they aren't, bear in mind that their goal is to steer away from discussion that Trumpf was trying to discriminate people coming to US legally by their country of origin, preferring some over others.

A lot of people in the US, are trying to get the hell out. There just aren't any jobs any more. Jobs all went to China with the huge mergers and acquisions, slash and burn junk bonds of the go go 80's. Buy a company, burn it for it's assets, screw it into a ton of debt and run. Rich people became super rich, everyone else lost their jobs, and the middle class went from middle to poor. If you're thinking of coming to the US, you're probably way better off where you are. There's lots of stuff to buy in the US, it looks prosperous, you can see all the stores, but nobody has any money to buy the stuff in the stores. You only see them in Walmart buying the groceries they need to buy, usually with Food Stamps to keep them barely alive.

Actually, there are plenty of Norwegian immigrants and their descendents in the USA (approx 5 million). Most of them left Norway when it was a dirt poor underdeveloped country, because they wanted a better life for themselves and their families in America. But of course, Trump doesn't know this. Sad!

I'd move to any European country over any other country from Africa. Does this make me a bigot or someone with common sense? And if I did move to another country, I'd have the decency to assimilate/adapt/respect the culture to the best of my abilities. I wouldn't insult the natives and expect the natives to change for me.

Three of my grandfather's aunts emigrated to the US on the turn of the 20th century, to get a better life for themselves. Sweden, where I live and they lived, was a poor country (perhaps even a shithole) until World War 2. Who would move from a better situation to a worse situation? Therefore we see many more people moving from Haiti to USA than the opposite, because the chance of a good life is better in USA than in Haiti. I often argue with my fellow Swedes who think we let in too many Syrians because the risk of taking in ISIS. I ask them why the immigrants would come here if they like ISIS. Sweden don't like ISIS. The government even tries to make it illegal to go to Syria, as well as making it illegal to show sympathy for ISIS. I disagree strongly with that, by the way, because as long as we allow Nazis to walk the streets of our cities, I don't see how we could ban someone to sympathize with ISIS. Anyway, I find it strange why people who supposedly like ISIS would go away from ISIS. If I liked ISIS and I was Syrian, I would be very happy because I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. No, the vast majority of people coming from Syria is afraid of ISIS and want to get away.

In defence of that mom: Edward Snowden and Somalia are more complicated issues that kids wont know anything about- whereas when a parent dedicates their life to making their children good, kind, open minded, empathetic people- and then the elected President contradicts you and says no, some people are shitty people from shitty counties- then they've just made your life much harder, and have encouraged your children to go down a different path to the one you had wanted. (I'm not a parent, but I'm a teacher of 9-10 year olds, and i have had to spend way too much time already trying to explain these remarks and make sure my kids know that everybody and everywhere is unique and valuable- especially those kids who are 1st and 2ng gen immigrants. I totally understand why that mom was so emotional.)
