Shishi-odoshi - Deer Scarer: One Day Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#landscape #japanese #calm #shishiodoshi
My day job (Contractor employee) was working on a landscape for a client. I thought of a simple and pleasing addition to the fish pond. Since the client planned on raising Japanese coy, I decided to add a little Japanese-inspired piece. So i came up with the Shishi-odoshi (deer scarer). The sound it makes (though originally intended to scare deers) is mesmerising and relaxing.

    we've been working on a little shishi odoshi and I feel like we did everything wrong: my brother cut the holes for the stick in the moving piece at the part that fills with water, leading to it leaking. I'm thinking about redoing that part completely. but then the next problem is to aim the water that comes out at the top rightly. the pump seems to be too strong and it's a solar pump, I can't change anything about it. no matter how I moved the bamboo piece from where the water comes out, it keeps going into the moving bamboo wrongly so half of the water drains down at the side of the bamboo, instead of going into it. plus, at the moment the bamboo goes down, the water that keeps coming from the top splashes on the bamboo and also drains out of our bucket when it goes back up. we use a little bucket and because of all that, it loses water fast. it's ridiculous lol. excuse my bad English!

    first of all, your english is excellent. 😁 its true that making this can be tricky but what’s important is the satisfaction when it does what it’s made to do (when u hear the end of the bamboo making that satisfying sound. thank you for sharing your story. 😁

    I know this is a bit older post, but I hope I can help in case anyone else has the same issues. First, you have to put the holes the dump tube is going to be pivoting on BEHIND a node that hasnt been knocked out. That allows the water to fill up, then tip the tube. Next, depending on how your water is delivered to the tube, you can adjust where it actually hits by adjusting the length of the piece the water is coming out. If you place the water falling right at the top of the fill tube, when it goes down, it won't hit the outside of the tube and drip down it and out of the water resivore. It's best to cut the angle of that fill tube to allow you to adjust it. I hope that makes sense, what I'm saying is hard to explain without a visual. A sharper angle is going to allow the water coming down into the tube to actually hit inside of it through the whole range of the tube tipping downwards. Also, just to clarify what I said about the node being intact on the fill tube, when your making this, the node needs to be as close to the center of the tube as it can, but slightly towards the front side of the tube where it fills, you need to put your holes behind the node to the heavier side of the tube. That weight is what makes it pop back up after the water empties. I hope this helps someone cause I'm not really sure how to describe this any better and it does sound a bit complicated but it's actually very easy. I forgot to add, a solar pump isn't optimal for this since the usually change their water flow based on the brightness of the sun. You'd have to keep adjusting it all the time and that would be a pain. On the other hand, if you've got a pump that is too strong of a flow even at it's lowest setting, you can get an inline ball valve and use that to lower the flow some more.

    @@spaceavenger54 its my second summer with the shishi odoshi now and im happy that its working well. the solar pump is not making any problems at all: its either not pumping any water if theres no sun (which is good for the neighbours at night) or else we placed it so the water is going straight into the filling part. so if its stronger it just makes everything move faster. yes its very difficult to explain. we had to replace the bamboo this year because it got a good crack during the winter. i guess it got too dry? we kept it in a greenhouse. but at least that gave us the chance to fix all the mistakes we did the year before.

    Hi Gilbert! If you can't find anyone around that's growing it already, then you might be able to source it from your local hardware. (it'll be outdoors with all the garden stuff, near the decorative panels and walls, etc) I have no idea where you are in the world, but in Australia, Bunnings has some large lengths of bamboo that would be suitable for this project. It'd be worth a look. Hope this helps! :D

    Hello and congratulations on your creation of the Japanese fountain, it is beautiful, so much so that I started doing it too😅 .... Excuse me ... for this water feature what pump would I need? I wouldn't want to buy it too powerful, are solar panels suitable for this game too? Thanks in advance and have a nice day😉 Federico

    hey! thank you. I didnt use a strong pump for this. 30-40watts should be enough for this. A solar powered pump is great though you’ll want to use something with lesser power. thank you!

  • @TheMurlocKeeper

    @TheMurlocKeeper

    Жыл бұрын

    The power of the pump you use will depend entirely on how high an elevation you want to make the water go. Measure the height of where the water is going to draw the water from (the pond, usually) and then from there, the height at which the water is going to feed out from. Take this information with you to the hardware when you go looking for pumps, and that sort of information will be on the pump boxes. Alternatively, if you need help, the store assistant will need that information as well, in order to help you choose the right pump. You can use a less powerful pump, but know that if you buy an underpowered pump, it might well burn out faster, as it will have to work hard to pump water up that high, and it will die faster. Get a pump that is powerful enough to do the job easily, and it will last much longer.

    This is beautiful work and I'm not here to discredit your craftsmanship or creativity, but there is one little thing that bugs me. I'm sure it could work as a deer scarer but it's not very zen-like because when the tube is emptied and falls back in place, it makes this big "CLUNK" sound. Do you have any idea on how to improve this specific aspect of the build?

  • @cgdwoodworks759

    @cgdwoodworks759

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. no problem at all. any comment is welcome. as for the sound, i purposely made it happen because its relaxing for me at least. 😁. you can eliminate the sound. all you have to do is remove the rock where the end of the bamboo hits after the water is emptied. replacing it with grass for example will make the landing a tad more silent. i hope this helps. 😁

  • @TheMurlocKeeper

    @TheMurlocKeeper

    You DO realise that the CLUNK sound at the end is precisely what it is meant to do, right? That is what it was called a "deer scarer" or "boar scarer". It made random enough loud noises to scare away animals! If you don't like this particular feature, you are going to have to build something a little different. but then...it wouldn't really be a shshi-odoshi anymore, now would it?
