Will there ever be a better Lady Macbeth? Not in this lifetime. Brilliant.

Those eyes can kill ... the way she widens them at key moments.

Why the original video tapes have never been remastered and this performance released on DVD is one of the ongoing mysteries of the recording business. Verrett and Abbado alone would justify the release but Cappuccilli is in fine voice and involved. A fabulous performance.

davy91101 the only original tape was spoiled by an underneath noise of football match comments recorded before but still audible in some of the arias like "la Luce langue"...So very stupid.

Carlo Pietroniro grandissima anche la Callas in questo ruolo....a dire il vero non so tra Verrett, Callas e Gencer chi sia la miglior Lady Macbeth....sono sicuramente le migliori!

Shirley Verrett owned this role. This was such an achievement for a mezzo-soprano like her. What a great perfoamnce this is!!! I wish i could see the whole performance!!!!

I think it was interesting to read once in an interview of Dolora Zajic that she would never sing again this role, as strong as she is yet. This means that it's a killer role, demanding more than a mezzo to sustain most of all the grand ensembles, and the sleepwalking tessitura in general.

Well actually, if you want to be technical...she sang mezzo soprano... but she wasn’t mezzo soprano. She herself has said in interviews that she was trained as a soprano. She’s very secure in soprano tessitura because she’s a dramatic soprano.

I don't know why, but this passage at the beginning of this aria(3:24-3:32) always reminds me of a serpent and of its slithering, wonderful, in fact, Lady Macbeth is a snake, a demon. Does anybody share my impression on the music? Shirley is of course great, the best lady after Gencer and Dimitrova.

+Paula Palacios Yes, I agree with you, I love Lady Macbeth's character. I especially love this line of this aria: "Ai trapassati regnar non cale, a loro un requiem, l'eternità!(eng:Reigning doesn't fit the departed:for them a Requiem is (destined) and eternity!) So deliciously evil and ironical!!

ha ha ha, you're right. I like that part too, but I love this: "nuevo delito, nuevo delito e neccesario". I think that describes lady macbeth.

+Paula Palacios Yes, I think that simple line makes us understand that she wouldn't have encouraged her husband to commit crimes if she hadn't been greedy of power, she too has feelings of remorse but then her ambition wins her over, the "voluttà del soglio(pleasure of the throne) is too strong... I love that line(Oh voluttà del soglio, oh scettro, scettro, alfin sei mio!)(Oh pleasure of the throne, oh, scepter, scepter at last you are mine!)and the music that comes with it.

You're right. You can see it, also when she sings VIeni t'affretta... io ti darò valore; and (I'm sorry for my italian, it isn't good, my native lenguage is spanish, it couldn't be so hard, haha) "Or tutti sorgete, ministri infernali, Che al sangue incorate spingete i mortali! Tu, notte, ne avvolgi di tenebre immota; Qual petto percota non vegga il pugnal". That's blow my mind and hearth.

Roberto Ramos Sempere, la Shirley Verrett era una fuoriclasse, assieme alla Callas le due piu' grandi interpreti di Lady. Questo si puo' affermare tranquillamente. Molte grandi voci ci hanno provato ma in genere sono state e sono Lady quasi sempre volgari.

I think that it isn't the audience the source of the noise, but since this is an old videotape recording the audio got messed up with other thing recorded on it (it happens also in other KZread videos which are taken form old videotapes)

The RAI recorded a soccer game on the same tape due to economics difficulties some years after this Macbeth... The video could be fully restored but not the audio...

Jean-Marie de la Trinite Ms. Price did not perform this role. She only recorded the arias. Verrett was the reigning Lady MacBeth in her day and Callas said that she and Caballe were the only divas who were successfully taking up the mantle of the spinto adramatica roles. She was right.

True, the great Leontyne never sang the entire role of Lady Macbeth. Nevertheless, her singing of La Luce Langue is matchless in beauty, humanity, and power. She reigns supreme in this aria as in others by Verdi which she never sang as complete portrayals on stage. I would rather hear Leontyne sing this single aria than any other soprano singing the entire role. To paraphrase Marcia Davenport: Leontyne has something all the other sopranos had, and she has something that none of them had. She is in a class by herself alone, unique and totally without peer in the annals of music. No one compares to her, no one.

As I said when I looked at Prices performance after your comment ..... ARE YOU WELL???? This was not Prices "thing". She brought NONE of the things Verrett or Christina D. ('86 live ) gave to this aria. Not by a long shot!!! ....good try!
