From the album Shirley Murdock!, released in 1986. Notice that I slowed down the tempo and tuned the pitch down also. I decided to show you what it is should have sounded like. Enjoy it.

This song takes me back to my father cheating on my mother. That still hurts me to this day. I'm a 50yr old man. That ruined our family!! It also taught me to stick to one women. I saw how much it hurt my mother. I'm married faithfully to the same women 27yrs and counting.

As long as u have happy memories, at least 1 (damn)!!U will ALWAYS be able to SMILE!!! "NOW that 🌳 is LEGALLLL !!, THE WORLD SHOULD BE A LITTLE BETTER THAN THE PAST. THE " PRESENT" is a" GIFT" .. THATS WHY the 2 words are officially the reason why the 2 words are associated to me!! ..SO LETS SMOKE, LAUGH, AND REMINISCE ABOUT ...AS REV. AL GREEN WOULD SAY..... " FOR THE GOOD TIMESSSSS!!" WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, ....U KNOW Who who you are!!! ETERNALLY !!! MISS B.A.T. From MR. F.L.M. !! .... reppn RVA!!

What I've always loved about this song it captures the human frailties and passions that we experience everyday. At the end becomes about our choices, and yet we cannot ignore the fact we have these feelings and experiences.

This song was as real as it gets. She didn't glorify or demonize. She just sung the truth about how crazy life can be. I was a teen when this song came out and it educated me on what NOT TO DO. The lesson I took from the song was that "everything that feels good to you, ain't always good for you."

I was 8 yrs old in '86', leaving DC my sister played this song in her car taking me and my sisters back to our new home in Fairfax county, Virginia. Our oldest sister passed 2 years later, in a car accident. Plus I moved away from my third grade love. What a harsh year.
This song will continue to be as truthful and heartfelt as yesterday!

I don't know why not. With trash like Only Fans and Tinder being the standard - this almost seems high standards. The bar is in the basement at this point. 😒😫
I remember trying to write the words to this song, I stopped, rewind, and play it again then write, I did this over and over and over and over, my mother unplugged it and I asked her why did she just do that because she messed me up... She had tears in her eyes, I said what's wrong momma, she couldn't formulate her thoughts, I froze and then she said, baby your brother was just killed, SADDEST FAY OF MY LIFE, I wanted to record, sing, cry, scream, I was paralyzed by fear. I was 24 and my brother was 22, oh how I miss him coming home in the middle of the night to tell me to cook chicken and fries, and play WAR, the card game. Oh how I still hurt. His girlfriend was pregnant, and he never met her, but she was born on my birthday...

This song was simply one of those universal events that happen once in a lifetime. I realize that many people discuss the meaning of the song. Yes, that is vital. The music composition and flow of this song is a masterpiece. The way the music knew to be quiet and let her talk it out. literally a steady bass a quiet keyboard and a shaker, the whole song. Then it matches her energy when she starts to really feel remorse. Brilliant. Seems almost too intimate for us to hear as her inner monolog.

This song came to life in my life! When this song came out I was sleeping with a married man and gave birth to his child! He never went back to the wife but I never became the wife because he never divorced her. Even today we are the best of friends and together we raised a very intelligent, sweet, college graduate, but it's nothing like being raised with a mother and father together who loves each other! I never wanted to hurt his wife but I fell in love with him(they both were cheating on each other). Today, I am a Woman of God ( happily married 17 years and counting) and I dedicate my life to schooling young girls on the love of God and not the FLESH! Thank God we Serve a LOVING GOD WHO FORGIVES! The wife and I are friends today and Sisters in Christ! God turned it around for the both of us! My daughter and her daughters interact like sisters and they call me Momma Lady T! What a Mighty God we serve! I BLESS GOD FOR FORGIVING ME and for the wife FORGIVING ME as well, AS WE LAY!

The late master producer, composer , singer, arranger, songwriter, prolific guitar player and funk music pioneer, Roger Troutman (R.I.P.). 🎸 🎵 ✍️ And Billy Beck, ( keyboard player, arranger, producer for the legendary funk band "The Ohio Players") really put their soulful feet into this R&B classic melodic slow jam, about adultery and forbidden love 🚫!! Their production along with Shirley Murdock's vocals made this song prolific!! "Illegitimate Baby making music" at its very Finest!!
From 87/88 I’m still listening…. 16 to 52 one of my all time classics👍🏾
I love Shirleys music in 1980s and still do!! This is a classic to me!!!!

This song doesn't matter until it does matter. And when it does, it can sting the soul!
Shirley Murdock is my all-time favorite vocalist. As we lay contains elements of soul, jazz, gospel, country, r&b, Broadway, and opera. No one in the world can perform this song in a manner comparable to or better than Shirley. I wish she was my musical mentor. So undervalued!

I love this song! Growing up in the inner city of Los Angels, Calif in the 80's was tough! With the explosion of crack on the streets and gang violence killing what seemed like the innocent over money and turf. And when it feels like U just cant take the heat of it all no more, a song like this comes out and calms the hood for a minute; at least a pause to acknowledge the Love felt and brought through Shirley Murdock's, rendition of "As We Lay." Thank U so much, I love this song and this was a "Hood" favorite!
2023 still listening 🥰🥰🥰🥰
When I first heard this song it was right on time. That was in the 80's. We in the 20's. It still has great impact.
