Shirley Muldowney. You are a true class act, going all the way back to your heyday. I was watching and rooting for you in the 1970s. I hope you have long and healthy retirement. You are one tough broad. And I mean that with all sincerity.

I love Shirley Muldowney, from way back in the day. I was so happy for her when she beat Don Garlits (my fuel dragster hero) and when she beat Connie Kalitta. She truly is a class act and a wonderful woman. God broke the mold after she was born!

It was damn near 11pm when my dad ran me down to her semi when I was only three, to meet her! She had everything packed up and ready to leave, yet she took the time to sign a poster, take a few pictures and to take me to her car in the trailer and tell me I could be what ever I wanted to be when I grew up! It changed my life! -Brittney Olsen

First saw you, Shirley, at the then 16-car, July '77 PDA at SIR, after you won the Summers. You beat Gaines Markley in his last driving appearance 6.12 to 6.12. Also saw you win the '80 Fallnationals pulling the front wheels off the line, and beating Marvin Graham in the TR-3/ Danekas car in the final. As for for the 1980s I was stationed in SoCal at Norton AFB when you debuted the Pioneer/Swindahl car at the '82 OCIR Grand Premier and dusted Big's sidewinder. I have to say what's most memorable about that '82 Grand Premier was Chi-Town running the table with 6.14s and 6.13s. When I saw the CTH at Pomona it was clear they were going to stomp.(And Shirley did also, until the final with LaHaie.) And Shirley driving past both Larry Minor/Gary Beck monster cars at the '83 Winternationals.

WOW , What a compliment to current Driver Leah Pruett ! Ms. Muldowney doesn't just hand those out , Leah is truly a great Drag Racer. However Shirley was the "Trail blazer" in the sport . I was 9 at the 1986 pre season test and tune in Phoenix for her Comeback and stayed at her pits for the whole weekend except for when she made her runs, then I was right back at her pits. I think I managed to piss off the late and great Steve Evens getting in his way. But Shirley couldn't have been more nicer to me. That race she gained a life time fan it was the best drag event weekend I had until... 1989 @ Phoenix for her last NHRA win and what a win it was she Knocked Out Gene Snow ,Joe Amato and Darrell Gwynn in the final and beat them all on Holeshots it was awesome!

You were such an inspiration to me in my racing years (1972-2008) Karts - would love to contribute to your survival. Need your email address. Many girls making their way in drag. Always wanted to meet you at a Lyn St James function for Women in racing. The biggest of hugs to you and your accomplishments that helped pave the way for us all. We always had to work 3 to 4 times as hard to gain half the respect. .

From what I remember she got some help from Konnie Kalita. You know with that nasty stuff like cutting your hands and knuckles and torquing so hard in an awkward position under an engine on a hundred degree day that your shoulders feel like there gonna pop out.
