    I wanted a Shirley too, but when I inquired it was about a 30 month wait. Then I found a used Lang on Craig's list that was priced reasonably. I may order a Shirley and just use the Lang until the other is ready. I've cooked 3-4 times on the Lang... I like it. It cooks good, even heat, etc. It just lacks the flexibility to grill/sear a steak or burgers and a few other things I'd like to have from a custom fabrication. Congrats on a beautiful cooker!!!

    I was looking at good old you tube ,at Allen's Country Built Smokers and came across the Shirley Brand then saw this video of yours. Shipping one to BC would be way too expensive. I make Argentine grills and other barbeques but not these elaborate cookers. I could make these but the cost of steel now would make them out of reach when using 1/2 and 3/4 inch plate. My small units use 3/16 plate which is good for smokers. I also use fire bricks were needed. Shirley is the best brand out there so you did right. The price he pays for steel is a quarter of what we pay for steel in BC. In Ontario you are close to the Hamilton steel mills so shipping does not kill those using steel there. Enjoy that Shirley !

    Great looking smoker. I've been following Shirley Fabrication (and building one in my mind) for over a year but haven't yet pulled the trigger. I'm also from Ontario (Peterborough Area). Your cooker is almost exactly what I envision. A couple of questions...why did you chose a 3/4 inch firebox vs. a 1/2 inch insulated? Also, a rotated warmer seems like an obvious, justifiable upgrade to me...was there a reason you chose not to rotate the warmer? Finally, how much of a hassle (and extra cost) was it to get it across the border? (taxes, duty?). In hindsight, would you have done it differently? Go down to Alabama yourself and get it (once the border opens up), or have Legendary bring it close (e.g. Detroit) and then you bring it the rest of the way? Thanks for your answers/input.

  • @papissmokehouse469

    @papissmokehouse469

    Great to hear from a fellow Canuck. Let me answer as best I can. First off, there is no ½ insulated firebox as far as I know. There is ½” or insulated (which is ¼” insulation and then another ¼”). So to me, for longevity - handing this down to my son - ½” was the obvious choice. So I beefed it up a bit more to ¾”. It takes a long burn to make it too hot to touch. I wasn’t a fan of the warmer shift for two reasons. First, I wanted a fold out shelf, and when you shift it, you have to duck under it to get to the firebox. Second, it puts the baffle handles on the wrong side - somebody could accidentally adjust it and you might not notice. My experience w Shirley was stellar. And with their shipping company run by Kevin White. I originally was planning to drive to Alabama and pick it up - but covid ended that. It was a bear to figure out how to import it. I would highly recommend any Canadian to buy one from them. Just not during a pandemic. Since it’s an almost 3 year waiting list - you should be ok. (Unless there is a previously scheduled pandemic that I am unaware of 😜). Hope this helps.

    @@gregcaron3064 thanks. I had an XL BGE for years, but really like the Shirley. Temp control is almost automatic - it takes work to raise temps - and once you do, they lock on to it. Just came across your video. I live near Niagara Falls Canada. Your Shirley smoker and trailer has my attention. I am looking seriously at the lone star grillz off set smoker based on months of watching mad science BBQ, Baby Back Maniac to name a few. Certainly a little more expensive but only a 4 month wait. Yes the boarders are a pain with all these boarder re-enter restrictions. I'm thinking there is no duty but only HST fees. Did you compare any of the other big name smokers like LSG, Arron Franklin, Meadow Creek smokers. Just curious. Thank you for your attention to this text.

  • @papissmokehouse469

    @papissmokehouse469

    David, great to hear from another Canuck. Yes, I looked seriously between Lang, LSG and Shirley. Meadow Creek isn't in this league in terms of build quality IMHO. As far as Franklin goes, it seems to me that you're paying a pretty hefty premium for a very basic smoker and the name. I wanted a reverse flow, so his was out anyway. Between the three, I obviously chose Shirley and was willing to put up with the wait. I know of one guy who purchased the LSG as a place holder, and then sold it when his Shirley was done. LSG would certainly be my second pick. Chris seems like a responsive guy and he does allow a bit of customization - but its basically pick from the menu kind of purchase. Yes, just paid the HST (and shipping because the border was closed all those months.) Hope this helps.
