Ship in a Bottle | The Magnus Archives Animatic

Hi I am back from the dead after 7 long, long months! This was supposed to take two months max but ended up taking the better half of a year instead, but what can ya do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is the longest project that I've ever worked on and, though I can't say I'm completely happy with it, I'm just really relieved that it's finally done. That being said, PLEASE slap some sense into me if I ever even think about doing anything like this again. PLEASE. I love the ideas my brain provides but this was just...too much...(I did really enjoy watching the final product though)
P.S. I just wanted to clarify that a lot of scenes that occur in this animatic are not chronological. There were some scenes that were kinda difficult to work with and I just wanted a good narrative flow that goes with the song ok
Thank you to Emily for hearing me out while I ranted about this animatic. I don't think this would have existed without ya

I've always thought of the Lonely as a metafor for depression - you don't even need to be alone, the feeling of isolation is enough. But it's not always indifference and emptiness - sometimes it's a storm and a fight for control in one's life and no one on the deck who can help. I also really liked how you did the waves! Such a good work!

Thank you! Martin being alone on the ship as a metaphor for his struggle against The Lonely was one of the very first concepts I thought of for this animatic, and I’m glad that this idea stuck around after all these months! I’m really happy that you enjoyed the animatic ❤️

@@bassacaglia9434 Aye, that was a great choice! Plus it unlocked a secondary metaphor with the wisps of fog swirling around Martin/Peter Lukas being appropriate both to The Lonely and to a nautical environment.

The moment where Martin is in his office alone and the ship is in the portrait on the wall, but after Jon is left standing in there by himself the ship is gone and all that’s left in the painting is the waves... that’s brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I love this whole animatic and you’ve made such incredible connections and art.

(I loved how even when he's in the "real world", there is still a picture of a boat in his office) And everything, from the grief or Tim and Sasha, then their photo floating in the sea with only Martin visible, to the tomb (of his mother I guess) and then the parallel between the hospital bed and the coffin, emphasizing how much Martin was scared to loose Jon AGAIN, ... *chef kiss*

HOLY SHIT!!! This is incredible! this was just in my recommend and I'm so glad i saw it... I’m SO impressed that all of this is in color and every panel is so detailed … amazing job! Fav bits: - The picture at the beginning ... I will never not be sad when someone draws parallels with s1 archives gang to how things turn out later - The entire first part where Martin is on the boat is SO well done? Those juicy juicy water physics … when I was first watching it I was like yup that’s a cool action packed boat scene :) but actually it takes so much work to draw a scene like that well... with having both the boat itself and the movement/appearance of the water look so good…mad kudos to you. (The frame at 1:58 also looks very nice I just love when people capture the foaminess of water like that lol) - Going off that, the background work in all the frames (like in the archives etc) is also really well done! and the way you structured/transitioned/edited everything just looks so good - even the contrast between Melanie getting support/help from Georgie and Martin going off on his own...oof - AT 3:10 … THE PARALLEL WITH JON IN THE COFFIN AND IN THE COMA? HELP thats so clever! I got chills at that bit it totally took me by surprise - I know this is a Martin centric vid but I love how you draw Jon…pretty jon rights (I want to give him a hug) - Peter Lukas dissolving into the Lonely when Jon Sees him is very satisfying, I really liked those frames! and how you drew the fog in general Anyways, this was super well executed and I really enjoyed watching it! Thank you for sharing!

Woah this animatic made me feel things I did not expect to be feeling. This is so phenomenal and adds SO MUCH to how I perceived these scenes. So thank you.

You can fit everything you know In a bottle for you to show Pick your brain apart and put it in (pick your brain apart) And build it again With needles and pins Everything you have earned is a ship With blue waves crashing into it But nothing can touch your happy thoughts anymore (nothing can touch your happy thoughts anymore) With your glass ceiling, walls, and floor Sailing on a ship in a bottle Anchor all your thoughts to the bottom Pulling ropes and pulling your head back To see what is breaking the foremast You set sail alone there is no crew No one on the deck who can help you This is all your own battle to win This is your ship and you are the captain Oh, captain, let's make a deal Where we both say the things that we both really feel I feel scared and I'm starting to sink And I only sink deeper the deeper I think Oh, captain Oh, captain, deal Oh, captain deal Oh, captain deal Oh woah There are red spots under your eyes From when you cry Into the sky Ocean waters rising above your neck, mmm You feel the glass Start to crack Sailing on a ship in a bottle Water's leaking through holes in the bottom Flying flags of ships that have long since Sat at the floor of the sea, but in defense You set sail alone there is no crew No one on the deck who can help you This is all your own battle to win This is your ship and you are the captain Oh, captain, let's make a deal Where we both say the things that we both really feel I feel scared and I'm starting to sink And I only sink deeper the deeper I think Oh, captain, make up your mind Before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time 'cause you're popping the cork You get lost in your brain And you lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane Oh, captain Oh, captain, deal Oh, captain deal Oh, captain deal Oh woah Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Oh, captain, let's make a deal Where we both say the things that we both really feel I feel scared and I'm starting to sink And I only sink deeper the deeper I think Oh, captain, make up your mind Before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time 'cause you're popping the cork You get lost in your brain And you lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane Oh, captain Oh, captain, deal Oh, captain deal Oh, captain deal Oh woah Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh Woah-oh-oh-oh-oh
